The ancient fishing port of Cassis, France, was rebuilt in the 18th century, resulting in a fantastic mix of old and new. The prettiest part of the town, the harbour, is a wonderful place to walk, sit in a water side café and watch the artists capturing the scene. The superb access to the Massif des Calanques is a sporting dream, and the famous wines produced in Cassis make relaxing in the evening, overlooking the coast an irresistible experience.

Things to do in Cassis, France

Cassis has a charming little beach to enjoy during the long summer months. Found beside the port, Cassis beach consists of fine, golden sands, and although it is not a huge beach, there are plenty of little beaches to the east and west of the village to discover. Just to the west of the harbour lies an enormous rock shelf which slopes into the sea, and has become hugely popular as a nudist ‘beach’.

There are some excellent boat trips to take from Cassis harbour. Fishing is a huge activity, and fishing trips from Cassis accommodation are among the best along the Cote d’Azur. The village’s proximity to the deep, fjord like gorges of the Calanques, makes it an ideal base for full exploration of these remarkable natural monuments.

However, Cassis’ most internationally renowned appeal comes through its rock climbing credentials. The white cliffs of the Calanques are a climber’s haven, with routes accessible from both land and sea, with climbers able to tackle the almost sheer 240m climbs.

Cassis is also set in some excellent walking and cycling country. There are regular cycling races passing through the village during the summer months, and there are a huge range of routes to choose from, taking in some of the finest views along the Provence coastline. Cassis is also surrounded by a great range of walking routes, both local and national. Access into the Massif des Calanques is excellent, and route maps for both walkers and cyclists are readily available from the Cassis tourist information office.

Marseille is just 22km from a Cassis property. The city is the second largest in France, and has long been the home to many of France’s finest artists and writers. The city is wonderfully cosmopolitan, offering some of the most highly rated restaurants and shopping streets in the south of France.

Summers in Cassis are blissfully warm and winters wonderfully mild. During July and August, temperatures can regularly reach well into the mid 30’s (˚C), whilst daily temperatures from May until September reach over 25˚C on most days.
