Cerbere, a pretty little coastal village on the French side of the border with Spain, is found just south of Perpignan in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountain range. Although the beaches are the small pebble type rather than sand, they make a refreshing change from many of the more touristy areas of the coast, offering a more tranquil and relaxing place to sunbathe and read a book.
Cerbere is popular with Scuba divers, who come to dive on the Reserve naturelle de Cerbere-Banyuls-sur-Mer, France’s first natural marine reserve. Snorkelling, dolphin spotting, line fishing and game fishing are also popular in the area.
Hiking and mountain biking are available in the foothills of the Pyrenees and further into the ranges, and many of these trails are also accessible in the winter months.
In the town itself there are several bars and restaurants where visitors are able to stuff themselves with fresh local cuisine, much of which is unique to the Catalan region. Visitors should go out of their way to take a look at the Belvedere de Rayon Vert hotel, a rather unique sight. The old hotel was built in the art deco style and was designed to look like a ship. Whether that was achieved is debateable, but it is rather a bizarre sight regardless.

Cerbere is located just a 48km drive from Perpignan, a town which boasts over ten centuries of history. Here visitors can see the cathedral of John the Baptist and the Palace of the Kings of Majorca or relax in one of the town’s many parks.

Winter is cooler, with temperatures dipping as low as 0C, but this makes Cerbere an ideal destination for those looking for some skiing action, with fabulous Pyrenees ski areas less than an hour drive from Cerbere.
