Badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943, it has been restored as a church with a foyer and a separate belfry. The new church is very modern inside and consists of four buildings grouped around the ruins of the original church.

Commissioned by William II in 1788-1791 as a Gate of Peace it was later rather ironically incorporated into the Berlin Wall. Step through the columned gateway onto former Easter European ground and see some of Berlin’s most imposing monuments.

Berlin Cathedral - Another must-see is the beautiful Cathedral built in 1894-1905 by William II. It was to compete with St Peter’s Basilica in Rome and has a golden altar frieze of the 12 apostles and the magnificent sarcophagi of former German royalty as well as an impressive Sauer organ.
