Things to do in Chateau d’Oex, Switzerland

There are two lift systems operating out of Chateau d’Oex, taking you to La Braye, from which you can find plenty of gentle skiing, perfect for family holidays. The little train that connects the village with Gstaad is a delight to ride in itself, offering spectacular views across the valley. The train takes you to the more challenging ski centres of Alpes Vaudoises offers far more challenging skiing, as well as a huge variety of slopes and challenges. In fact, with a full Chateau d’Oex ski pass, there are over 450km of downhill pistes to attempt.

The Les Diablerets Glacier offers year round skiing to anyone in Chateau d’Oex accommodation. The skiing is fantastically varied, offering enough to keep the whole family happy, from the fearless teenagers to younger, more timid children. The après-ski in Chateau d’Oex is not wild by any means, but there are plenty of rustic restaurants in which to get warm by the fire and refuel on fantastic Swiss cuisine.

Chateau d’Oex has risen to become one of the most popular hot air ballooning centres in Switzerland. The warm thermals rising up through the valleys are ideal for hot air balloon rides, and the surrounding scenery is certainly awe-inspiring from above. If you are not lucky enough to have your own balloon, there are a great range of reasonably priced charter rides to be found. There are also paragliding, mountaineering and riding schools in Chateau d’Oex, which are mostly open throughout the year.

Chateau d’Oex’s famous neighbour, Gstaad is regularly referred to as a fairytale village, and if you visit during your stay, you will grudgingly agree! The town is impossibly picturesque, with wooden Alpine chalets backed by soaring peaks covered in thick pine forests, and all in the shadow of an imposing castle high above the village. The mountain train connects the two villages, making Gstaad a great place to shop.

Winters in Chateau d’Oex are cold, with monthly averages hovering around the 0˚C mark in December, January and February. However, with spring comes surprisingly warm conditions, and by July, conditions are perfect for enjoying the stunning, lush alpine scenery that surrounds you, with daily peak temperatures usually in the mid 20’s (˚C).

The nearest airport to Chateau d’Oex chalets is Geneva International Airport (GVA), located 130km away. There is a train connection taking 3 hours, changing in Montreux, as well as a range of bus, taxi and coach transfers from the airport available. Although not essential, arranging an airport transfer before you leave for your holiday is strongly advised.
