Chateaulin provides an idyllic location for a relaxing holiday and is a charming commune located close to many attractions in the region. Chateaulin is located in the Finistere department within the region of Brittany in the North West of France. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, gites, cottages, B&Bs and campsites.
Chateaulin has some excellent places to explore and is located near Monts D'Arrée National Park and the Montagnes Noires, which are great areas for hiking. Visitors to the area can also get around by cycling and horse riding. About 30 minutes drive away holidaymakers can find some delightful beaches along Brittany’s west and south coasts, where there are various watersports such as windsurfing available. The town is situated on the banks of the River Aulne, which offers good fishing opportunities. Holidaymakers will find tennis courts open to the public in Chateaulin and golf courses are about 30 minutes drive away. There are restaurants, bars and cafes in and around the town serving excellent French dishes as well as some international fare. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and beverages here as well as gifts and souvenirs from a good selection of stores here.
This picturesque riverside town has some charming buildings including the Chapelle Notre Dame, which stands on a hillside. Chateaulin is near the medieval city of Quimper, which has many interesting sights. Amongst the attractions worth seeing here are the medieval fortifications and houses and the cathedral of Saint-Corentin, which features a remarkable bend in its middle. There are also a couple of interesting museums here including the Musee des Beaux-Arts. About 40 minutes away is the city of Brest, which is home to a wonderful aquarium, filled with many different marine species including one of Europe’s largest collections of penguins. The Tanguy tower houses an interesting museum showing the history of the city, whilst the castle in Brest contains the National Navy Museum. The botanical garden here is also well worth a visit and has endangered plants from around the world.
The climate in North West France is a temperate one, although the weather conditions are greatly affected by the Atlantic Ocean. The Brittany area of France receives about 200 days of rainfall annually with November to January the wettest time of year. July and August are the hottest months of the year with average maximum temperatures approximately 21 degrees centigrade.
Brest Bretagne Airport (BES) is approximately 40 minutes drive from Chateaulin and has flights arriving from three different airports in the UK as well as several French airports. The UK airports are Birmingham (BHX), Manchester (MAN) and Southampton (SOU). There are five car hire companies located at the airport. These are Avis, Europcar, Hertz, National/Citer and Sixt.
