The peaceful destination of Chrani is an excellent option for anyone that would like to get away from it all, and visit an authentic Greek village that is off the radar of the vast majority of tourists. The surrounding area, known as the Peloponnese, is surprisingly green, and offers plenty for those seeking a hiking and walking break. With a good beach, clear waters and a number of amenities that belie the village’s small size, holiday rental accommodation in Chrani is the ideal place to recharge the batteries and experience ‘real’ Greece.
The hills that surround Chrani provide good hiking and walking opportunities, with spring a particularly good time of the year for these activities as a huge range of flora and fauna start to emerge during this season. Horse riding is also an available option, and will allow you cover a larger distance and take in stunning mountain views as you get higher up. The dense greenery and olive groves of the Messinia region are what makes it one of the most beautiful areas in the whole of Greece.
Voidokilia Beach is a popular spot with both those looking to sunbathe and water sports enthusiasts. Snorkelling and scuba diving are particularly popular, and swimming is a great way of cooling off during the hot summer months. When it comes to evening entertainment, despite Chrani’s relatively small size there are a number of good quality restaurants to choose from, each cooking up traditional Greek dishes such as Lamb Kleftiko and Souvlaki, all washed down with locally-made wine.
There is much to see and do just a short distance from Chrani, and although public transport is sometimes an option, the use of a rental car is the best way of getting around. Just a short drive from Chrani are lakes, waterfalls, ancient sites of interest, castles and many secluded coves and beaches, far away from the tourist crowds.
There are an abundance of other places to visit in the Messinia province, ranging from small villages to large tourist resorts. Two of the bigger options are Kalamata (46km away), which is the capital of the province and a great place in which to sample olives, figs and other locally produced food and drink, and Stoupa (79km), one of the top beach resorts in the region and home of some of its finest restaurants.
Summer temperatures in Chrani can reach well above 30C, and above 35C is not uncommon. Spring and autumn are slightly cooler times in which to visit, especially if you plan on plenty of hiking and walking during your stay.
Kalamata International Airport (KLX) is the nearest airport that receives direct flights from the UK, with flights from London Gatwick and Manchester through Thomas Cook Airlines. The airport is 21km from Chrani.
