Colico is an important town situated near the northern tip of Lake Como, Italy. High up and surrounded by mountains, the town is a busy tourist centre, and a great location from which to base yourself when touring the lake, as it has some fantastic rental accommodations, and good infrastructure and amenities.

Being situated on Lake Como, Colico is an excellent destination for water sports enthusiasts, with windsurfing, sailing and kite surfing just some of the activities on offer. Newcomers can pay for lessons and the more experienced can hire equipment and get started straight away.
After a hard day on the water there are a decent selection of bars and restaurants to relax in, and a nightclub if you fancy carrying on into the early hours. Most of the nightlife is situated in the most attractive part of Colico - the lakeside piazza, which also has a range of ice cream parlours, pizzerias and a market, as well as various shops on it.
Colico is dominated by Monte Legnone, which rises over 2600m, and is the highest mountain on the lake. A few kilometres south of the city, and standing at the foot of Monte Legnone stands the Abbey of Piona. This Clunaic monastery is open to the public, and houses various collections of Byzantine artworks. The Romanesque cloister was built in 1257, and from here you can also get a panoramic view of the lake.
Another landmark well worth a visit is the Montecchio Fortress. Built entirely of concrete and stone, it is the only Italian World War 1 fort that is still intact, and houses the four largest cannons in the country.

The surrounding Lombardy region is one of the most peaceful and relaxing areas in Italy, but just a relatively short distance from big cities such as Milan, should you fancy some top-quality shopping and dining. Colico is just one of several towns that surround the edges of the beautiful Lake Como, and you can make the trip south, taking in Bellagio, Lierna and a number of other worthwhile stops along the way, or head anti-clockwise around the lake and visit Gravedona and Menaggio.

A holiday rental in Colico is best enjoyed during late spring or early summer, when temperatures are warm without being overbearing. The mercury plummets in winter, but the crisp air and crystal clear waters of Lake Como mean that this is still a great time to visit the area.
Flights to Colico, Italy
Colico is an important transport hub, and has good rail and bus links with Milan. As a result, the cheapest and easiest method of reaching your holiday destination is through a budget flight to Milan, and the use of public transport or a hire car for the second leg of the journey.
