Cruilles is a medieval village in Catalonia’s Baix Emporda, not far from the city of Girona and within minutes of the scenic Costa Brava. During your visit to a Cruilles holiday rental you’ll be surrounded by picturesque medieval villages, stunning countryside, with a number of immaculate beaches no more than 15 minutes by car.
Cruilles is a small village with splendid views of the mountains, and a handful of buildings dating back as many as 1,000 years. At the heart of the village, in the main square, is a centuries-old circular defensive tower, which stands at 26 metres. The church of Santa Eulalia is worth a visit if you’re staying a Cruilles cottages – this Gothic building boasts Romanesque paintings inside and is part of of the 11th Century Sant Miquel de Cruilles monastery.
A few minutes in the car from your villa in Cruilles will take you to the charming town of La Bisbal. There’s a market here every Friday devoted to local produce such as olives, cheeses and fresh vegetables, and the town is famous for its high quality ceramics. The Romanesque Episcopal Palace here is especially beautiful, and takes up a large portion of the old-town. Meanwhile of you visit La Bisbal in mid-August you’ll be able to catch the town festival.
If you’d like a day at the beach then the Mediterranean coast is no more than 20 minutes from holiday cottages in Cruilles. The town of Begur offers a lovely beach, with calm, sheltered waters, while Playa de Tamariu is a lovely cove with golden sand, backed up by unspoiled wooded hills.
It’s well worth making the 30-minute journey west of self-catering villas in Cruilles to the city of Girona. Here can explore one of Spain’s best-preserved old-towns, with quaint buildings and narrow streets. There’s a sizeable medieval Jewish quarter here, as well as a host of buildings dating to the middle ages. Half an hour north of Cruilles is the Garrocha Volcanic Zone, where you’ll encounter some of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes Europe.
Summers around Cruilles holiday accommodation are invariably warm, with highs peaking above 30 degrees in July and August. The rest of the year is generally pleasant, with warm weather in spring and autumn, and mild or cool weather in the winter months.
The closest international airport to self-catering cottage rentals in Cruilles is Girona (GRO), just over 30 minutes to the east. Ryanair offers flights to and from a handful of airports in England, including London-Stansted (STN), Birmingham (BHX), East Midlands (EMA) and Manchester (MAN).
