The area surrounding Duras is stepped in history, from the charming medieval Bastide villages to the imposing fortified chateaux, Duras is a fantastic spot to explore the history of France and the historical contests between England and France that occurred in the region. There are so many historic sites of interest, including the world famous pre-historic caves scattered through the area, that you could spend your entire Duras holiday sightseeing. One of the best ways to explore however is on foot, by bicycle or on horse back. The Duras Tourist Information centre has detailed routes you can follow, taking advantage of local knowledge and the magnificent walking and riding paths that adorn the countryside.

The rivers of the Dordogne and Vezere are fantastic places for sport and relaxation too. Both rivers offer exceptional fishing, (permits for which are available from any local tabac), and are clean and clear enough to allow refreshing dips during the summer months, which are especially appreciated on walking holidays during the hot summer months. Canoeing trips along the river also provide some of the best, and least seen, views of the Duras chateaux, caves and castles too.

Golfers are also very well catered for. The exceptional Chateau de Vigiers golf course offers a fantastic 18 hole round in glorious Lot-et-Garonne landscapes, as well as all the rental and practice facilities you might need to blow away the cobwebs after your journey. The club house is also home to gyms, restaurants and spa facilities for those requiring a little pampering after their attempts to conquer the course! Places to visit on holiday in Duras, France

Any wine connoisseur or in fact anyone with even a passing interest in wine should visit St Emilion. St Emilion and its vineyards have been named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, for its wine heritage, as well as the beautiful Monolithic Church carved from a solid limestone cliff.

During the summer, the appeal of the beaches of the Cote d’Argent can be overpowering, but luckily for those renting Duras villas, can be reached in under an hour and a half.

Duras basks in long, hot summers, with daily temperatures of between 25 and 35˚C expected daily from the end of May until mid-September. July and August see daily temperatures in the mid 30’s almost daily, with long, balmy evenings opening up the whole day for entertainment.
