Things to do in East Bohemia, Czech Republic

East Bohemia is bordered by the Giant Mountains to the north and Poland to the north-east, with four other regions of the Czech Republic also meeting its land borders. Unsurprisingly, this makes East Bohemia an area of contrast and variety, and several types of vacation can be enjoyed in the region, including a trip around many rural towns and villages, a winter sports holiday and even a big city break.

Places to visit on holiday in East Bohemia, Czech Republic

Many visitors to the Czech Republic head straight for Prague, and as a result miss out on a number of cities that offer almost as much as the capital, but at a fraction of the prices. Hradec Kralove is the regions capital, and has a well-preserved centre and a strong sense of culture. The same could also be said of nearby Pardubice, which annually hosts Europe’s largest chess competition.

Other towns within the region worth a visit include Kuks – which contains a large collection of baroque statues, and Nove Mesto nad Metuje – a picturesque artistic town with a stunning main square.

A perfect example of the contrast found in East Bohemia is the landscape. The region contains some of the country’s flattest landscapes, but also its highest peaks. The peaks around Orlicke hory border Poland, offer some excellent hiking, climbing and skiing, and are a great destination for an outdoor adventure break.

Explorers will also love Cesky raj. This name of this protected landscape area translates as ‘Bohemian Paradise’, and with hiking and biking trails, ruined castles and unspoilt landscapes to explore, it’s not hard to see why.
