El Algar, Murcia, Spain - The Spain the Spanish Keep Quiet About
There is something about the Murcia area of Spain that gets to your very heart - and El Algar is even more special. A small town in rural Costa Calida it has even been known to smell of lemon blossom when the trees are in flower. There is much about the area that is unique. Close by natural features such as the large salt water lagoon of the Mar Menor and the beautiful Mediterranean coast nestle against the splendour of the hills of the Calblanque National park. Day to day life in El Algar is typically Spanish with a local weekly market, fiestas and festivals particularly at Easter and all the hustle and bustle you would expect - together with the quiet siesta time. The nearest big town is Cartagena just ten minutes way. This old town is the "new" Carthage from Roman times and has extensive roman remains to prove it as well as a busy town centre with shops and restaurants and a lively port. There is plenty to do in the area with lots of amenities - from playing golf at the La Manga Club to scuba diving and go-karting to just sitting sipping wine watching the sun go down. Come to the real Spain – the one the Spanish keep quiet about!
