As soon as you start driving along palm lined roads, you will know that you are approaching the town of Elche, Spain. Elche (Elx) is a magnificent city of art and tradition on the Costa Blanca in Alicante, named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its unique attractions, including the Elche Palm Grove or Palmerar d’Elx. There thick cover of palm trees throughout the town provides a wonderfully exotic feel, further accentuated by the glorious beaches that stretch out along the coastline.

Things to do in Elche, Spain

There are many wonderful sights to see from an Elche property. The La Calahorra Fortress is especially spectacular, found within the old walled city of Elche. There is a great amount to see within the castle, and you may be surprised by the strong Egyptian influences within. The re-enactment of the life of the Virgin Mary or Mystery of Elche, held in the Elche Basilica of Saint Mary is a unique experience, and one which should certainly not be missed if you are lucky enough to be staying in Elche accommodation over the second weekend of August. Many of Elche’s most exciting attractions are within the old town, including the Altamira Palace, Moorish Baths and Basilica of Santa Maria, and many hours can be spent slowly wandering the beautiful streets or sipping a chilled drink in one of the pavement cafes, watching the world slowly drifting by.

The Elche Palm Tree Forest is a remarkable place to visit from any Elche accommodation. With over 200,000 palm trees, the forest is not only a defining feature of the landscape, but also of the town itself, and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A wonderful way to see the forest is from the sky, as there are plentiful opportunities to view the region from the basket of a hot air balloon. Rides last in the region of 40 minutes and are a wonderful treat to enjoy from a self catering Elche villa or apartment.

The Rio Safari Park is a fantastic place to take children from an Elche holiday rental. The park is filled with animals to see, and there are even dolphin displays to be enjoyed. If the summer heat is too much whilst touring the park, there is a fantastic swimming pool on site, complete with water slides, so remember to pack your swimming gear. Many of the holiday rental villas in Elche have pools of their own, but when daily peak temperatures reach 40˚C, you cannot possible swim too much!

The famous town of Torrevieja is just 50km from an Elche holiday rental property. During the summer months especially, the beaches of the Costa Blanca can become overpowering in their appeal. There are a huge range to choose from, with the closest, Santa Pola being just a 10 minute drive from an Elche property rental.

Weather in Elche, Spain

Elche is blessed with a glorious Mediterranean climate of long, hot, dry summers and wonderfully short, extremely mild winters. Daily peak temperatures can be expected to climb into the mid 30’s (˚C) on a daily basis from early May until late September, and during July and August, temperatures can often break the 40˚C mark. With around 11 hours of sunshine a day, and warm conditions lasting long into the evening, it is little wonder that Elche accommodation is in high demand for the vast majority of the year.

Cheap flights to Elche, Spain

Alicante Airport (ALC) is just 14km from a holiday rental villa in Elche, Spain. There are an enormous range of cheap flights to Alicante from across the UK, with flights arriving with almost alarming regularity. As the airport is so close, taxi transfers are an excellent option, but if you would like a free reign to explore the whole of Alicante, and the coastline especially, a hire car is an excellent option.
