Erimi, Cyprus

Erimi village is one of the most ancient villages of Cyprus, situated between two major towns, Paphos and Limassol. It might seem at first to be in the middle of nowhere, but it is in fact in the middle of everywhere.

The village itself is peaceful yet at the same time it resembles an urbane life and also has its own shops, banks, tavernas and the only Wine Museum in Cyprus.

Historical places of interest around Erimi village

Curium:
Curium (Kourion in Greek) was one of the old Kingdoms of Cyprus. Remains of its various settlements include houses with superb mosaics and theaters which stand high up on the cliffs overlooking the blue Mediterranean Sea. This ancient theater is the setting for many spectacular music concerts and dramatic performances in the summer months.

Sanctuary of Apollo:
Apollo (God of the Woodland) was worshipped here from the 8th century BC. The buildings were destroyed by earthquakes many years ago but you can still see the small temple and the beautiful columns

Kolossi Castle:
Kolossi Castle is an impressive 15th century castle with 3m thick walls. It was build by the Knights of St.John of Jerusalem to be used as their headquarters.

Ancient Amathus:
Eight kilometers east of Limassol-Kolossi Castle, stands the marvelous site of Ancient Amathus that was extremely important in the ancient word and today is the setting for a wide variety of cultural events.

Local Events, celebrations & festivals

Kataklysmos:
Kataklysmos is a religious festival that is unique to Cyprus. Originally the festival was a pagan one that commemorated the birth of Aphrodite from the waves at Petra tou Romiou (near Paphos)

Ancient Greek Drama:
For a month from early July, Cyprus hosts the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama. The festival is in its 5th year and theatre companies from all over the world perform ancient dramatic works in the spectacular setting of the cliff top theatre ot Curium and in Ancient Odeon that overlooks the store in Kato Paphos.

Limassol Wine Festival:
Thousands of people travel to Cyprus for the Annual Limassol Wine Festival. The Festival was begun by the four main wineries in Limassol in 1961 to help promote their products to the general public. Since then the event has gathered momentum and international renown, attraction thousands of visitors from all over Europe.

Shakespeare at Curium:
For more than thirty years there is an annual Shakespeare production each spring in the spectacular setting of Curium.

Do not forget the endure in some of the fascinating sports that Erimi village offers like green bowling, karting, horse riding, beach and water sports.

Attractions, crafts and delicacies

Historians believe that Cyprus is the country with the longest continuous history of winemaking. Today there are more than 35 regional small modern wineries spread in the nearby wine villages which can easily visit thanks to Erimis perfect location.

Many other villages are well known for particular handicraft and delicacies; these include Lefkara, Lani, Phini. Many of the villages have beautiful churches adorned with icons and rich folklore like the monastery at Trooditissa which has a holy leather belt that is renowned for women to have a child.
