Make a holiday rental home or villa in Extremadura, Spain your home away from home

Extremadura is one of Spain’s last untouched regions. Located to the north of Andalucia, Extremadura is an amazing region with a truly unique culture, which has clear Portuguese influences, some of the finest Roman ruins in the whole of Spain and landscapes that will melt your heart. The region is a hidden treasure, and one which you feel guilty telling people about, but once you have taken self catering Extremadura accommodation once, you will return many, many times.

Shops and Things to do in Extremadura, Spain

It is hard to know where to start with shops and things to do in Extremadura, Spain. There are far too many historic sites of importance to mention in such a short guide to Extremadura, although the towns of Caceres and Merida cannot escape a mention. There are more than 50 megalithic monuments in Extremadura, as well as some of the most beautiful castles, synagogues and roman fountains that you could possibly imagine. An Extremadura villa really is a historian’s dream, but the sites are of such beauty and interest, anyone can get carried away, regardless of your historic interest, or lack thereof!

The countryside is stunningly beautiful, with absolutely no shortage of trails to walk and ride horses along. The Monfrague National Park is of special mention, found in the north of the region, and extremely worth exploring from any self catering holiday villa in Extremadura, Spain. The park is especially popular with bird watchers and nature lovers, with a huge range of bird species being spotted in the park, form stork to black vulture. Lynx are also spotted in the park as well as a great range of other creatures. There is limited access to some areas of the park, as conservation is key. The national parks of Sierra de San Pedro and Sierra San Mamede are more open to visitors, and equally wildlife rich.

Anyone with a love for food will be right in their element from Extremadura accommodation too. Iberian pork is a hugely important part of local diets, and the game, boar and venison is absolutely sensational. You shall never want for good food from an Extremadura villa, and the local wine is superb.

Places to visit on holiday in Extremadura, Spain

Merida is a phenomenal town. Home to undoubtedly the most impressive roman ruins in Spain, and the most unknown, Merida is well worth exploration. The sites have been declared as UNESCO world heritage sites, which is extremely understandable, especially when you set eyes in the astonishing theatre and amphitheatre.

Weather in Extremadura, Spain

Extremadura acts as a perfect escape throughout the year. Even the coldest month, January, sees monthly average temperatures of 8˚C, with daily peak temperatures usually threatening the 15˚C mark. During the long, hot summer months, you can expect daily peak temperatures well into the 30’s, with blissfully balmy evenings from June right through until the end of October.

Cheap flights to Extremadura, Spain

A hire car is an essential asset when staying in Extremadura accommodation, as the area is wonderfully rural and the attractions are spread across a large area, unlike the man made haunts of the rest of Spain. Lisbon Airport (LIS) is fantastically well served by flights from the UK, and hire cars are in abundance. The airport is around 2 hours from the centre of the region, but the journey is worth it a thousand times over.
