Falmouth named after the river Fal, is a town and port on the south coast of Cornwall and it's natural harbour is the deepest in Europe and the third deepest in the world. This makes it a popular water sports and boating location. It is a scenic resort with five fine beaches and loads of holiday attractions.

Falmouth is a popular holiday destination and famous as the start and finish point of several round the world voyages, including the record breaking ones of Dame Ellen Macarthur and Sir Francis Chichester. In 1998 the town saw almost ninety Tall Ships set sail for Portugal.

There is so much to see and do in Falmouth that you may find staying in a hotel or guesthouse too restrictive. They are all convenient for the water and the small villages of Feock, Flushing, Bareppa, Durgan and Mawnan Smith.

Falmouth is home to Cornwall's National Maritime museum and its "surfs up", "Titanic" and other special exhibitions. There are network of passenger ferries that will transport you past wooded creeks, quaint villages and pretty hamlets to St Mawes or Truro along the Fal and Helford Rivers. There are diving and sailing schools, yacht charter, skippered cruises, water sports centres with equipment for hire and local fishing trips.

Falmouth's beaches, Gyllyngvase, Swanpool, Castle, Tunnel and Maenporth all have lovely white sands and there is also a rural beach at Kiln Quay. Opposite Swanpool beach there is a tranquil nature reserve teaming with the local wildlife.

The Fal estuary has played a major role in our nations defence dating back to Tudor times and Henry V111's castles at Pendennis and are open all the year round. Renting a holiday cottage in Falmouth allows you to visit the subtropical valley garden at Glendurgan and also Kimberly Park, Queen Mary Gardens and Fox Rosehill Gardens. It is also convenient for the other popular gardens of Cornwall, such as Trebah, Trelissick, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project.

The Princess Theatre has a year round music, drama, festival and variety program, as does the theatre at the Poly. Falmouth art gallery is family friendly, free and has one of the most important collections in Cornwall. Truro has a theatre and nightlife venue at the Hall for Cornwall.

Falmouth has an abundance of hotels, restaurants and cafes offering a variety of Cornish and international cuisine made from local produce and seafood, not forgetting the Cornish pasty.

The south coast of Cornwall is known for its mild weather and the maritime climate in Falmouth, which is warmed by the Gulf Stream, allows many exotic sub tropical plants to flourish.

Travelling to Falmouth

Newquay and Plymouth airports serve Falmouth it is a popular cruise line destination. The town has three railway stations on its maritime line served by regular trains from Cornish stations via Truro. First and Truronian operate local bus services.
