Ficulle, Umbria, Italy - What a view-what a landscape!
Ficulle is a small hill top medieval hamlet in the beautiful rolling hills of Umbria - known as `the green heart` of Italy. Situated in the province of Terni, it is on the old road (the A1 motorway runs parallel in the valley below). Just about half way between Orvieto and Fabro - both junctions on the motorway. Orvieto at 20kms, Perugia at 60kms, Terni and Todi are well known nearby towns.
With a population of only 1500 it is a quaint town but with all local amenities - several food stores selling fresh fruit and veg, a bakers selling freshly made ciabatta, a butchers selling spit roast hog and chicken together with several local bars and restaurants. The whole countryside seems to be covered with vineyards producing the world famous Orvieto Classico wine.
Ficulle is also renowned for its truffles and in nearby Fabro there is a `Tatufo Slow` -national truffle show every November. Ficulle is dominated by the twin tower `Rocca` and there are several interesting old churches. Just outside the town, heading south on the SS71 at the top of the hill is a white road leading down to Torre de Monaldeschi - voted `Best Development in Italy'. This is a superb recreation of a medieval hamlet or borgo with private holiday homes (some of which can be rented). We stayed here in October `08 and apart from the fab Indian summer with temperatures in the mid 20`s, where we dined al fresco, the early morning view over the hills and valleys was better than a picture postcard. The valleys with mist clinging to the hillsides and the peaks of the hills rising majestically above made this such a special romantic place - what a view - what a landscape!
