Located just 16km from the beaches of Torrevieja, Formentera del Segura is a small village in the Vega Baja region of the Costa Blanca. The village is named after Don Nicholas Perez de Sarrio, the former Lord of Formentera, who controlled the area during the 18th century. Formentera del Segura has seen a rise in tourism in recent years, but remains one of the quieter holiday rental destinations in this part of the Costa Blanca, and is a great place for a relaxing break.

Things to do in Formentera del Segura, Spain

As with many others in the region, Formentera del Segura was originally a Moorish village, but was almost totally destroyed by an earthquake in 1829, and as a result, few of the buildings in the village date back past this date. There are still sites of interest, however, the majority of which are located around the main plaza, which is also the home of the town hall and the traditional village fountain.

Farming and agriculture have long been the mainstays of the local economy, with the local specialties being citrus fruits, honey, cereals and vegetables. All these and much more can be found in the local shops, but some of the best bargains are to be found at the open air markets. A decent selection of cafes, bars, shops and restaurants can be found around the village, with even more at next-door Rojales.

A number of fiestas take part in Formentera del Segura throughout the year, including the ‘Day of the Bicycle’ – a bicycle race held in May. Festival time is a great time to visit Formentera del Segura, and by doing this you will add further value to your vacation.

In and around Formentera del Segura golf courses can be found in their droves, with the nearest option being the La Marquesa Golf & Country Club, just 4km away. Another good quality course, La Finca, is also within close reach, and there are many others around the region.

Places to visit on holiday in Formentera del Segura, Spain

The neighbouring village of Rojales is just 2km from Formentera del Segura, and has more in the way of supermarkets and evening entertainment, as well as some famous cave dwellings. Many other towns and villages are just waiting to be explored nearby, with many visitors electing to head to the beaches at the traditional town of Guardamar (11km) or the more tourist-orientated Torrevieja (16km).

Formentera del Segura apartments are a great place to be during summer months, when the weather is dry and sunny, with temperatures often around the 30C mark. Outside of peak season the weather is still blissfully warm, with late spring and early autumn also popular times to visit.

Murcia – San Javier Airport (MJV) is 48km south of Formentera del Segura, and Alicante Airport (ALC) is the same distance in the opposite direction, providing you with many flight options from around the UK. Budget operators tend to prefer Alicante, but good deals can be found to both airports.
