Fthiotis - Undiscovered Greece
Fthiotis in mainland Greece is one the most beautiful regions of the country, with an exhilarating diversity of landscape and areas of astonishing beauty. The whole length of its eastern edge faces onto the Aegean Sea, and inland it is spectacularly mountainous, green and fertile, with waterfalls, rivers and lakes, huge forests and countless pretty coves and empty beaches.
The area has played a major role in Greece’s history, and is renowned for its treasures and artefacts, with many villages archeologically protected. It’s real Greece; rural and timeless, with tiny hamlets, small villages and pretty fishing harbours waking to the daily sounds of the local church bells or at dusk relaxing to the clink of glasses in the village ouzeri's after the days work.
Because it’s just a two - hour drive away, for Athenians it’s an all - year favourite. It’s their weekend getaway, either in the summer for its numerous and beautiful beaches, or the winter for its excellent skiing, and their summer villas and houses dot the hills and coastline looking out over warm, gentle, seas. It has become a sophisticated getaway retreat with plenty of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars happily mixing in with traditional tavernas and bakeries and real village life.
Greece’s second largest island, Evia, lies just off the coast, a 10 minute ferry trip from Glyfa, and in a short drive one can reach the spectacular monasteries of Meteora, the ancient ruins of Delphi, or the mountainous region of Pelion.
Its cities of Larissa, Lamia and Karditsa give it a sophisticated edge, their inhabitants enjoying the benefits of modern life mixed with the tranquillity, peacefulness and beauty of the area around them.
