Galamares is located in the very heart of the Sintra Cascais Natural Park, in the south-west corner of Portugal. Many visitors to the region opt to stay in the nearby town of Sintra, but Galamares is a different proposition altogether, being a small village that sits on the fringes of the action. These peaceful surroundings allow you close and easy access to the beaches, towns and all of the key attractions of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Two of the main lures for tourists visiting Galamares are beaches and golf. The beaches are those of the south-west corner of Portugal, and attract visitors of all ages with their great combinations of sand and surf. Galamares golf options are also numerous, with several good quality courses in the vicinity, and the weather to match.
The entire local region is enveloped in the Sinta-Cascais Natural Park, which covers a total area of 145 square kilometres. There are a number of historical and natural attractions to be found within the park, which will also be of particular interest to nature lovers and outdoor pursuits enthusiasts.
The village of Galamares is quiet, traditional and peaceful, with the vast majority of the population being locals rather than tourists. Amenities are basic, rather than numerous, but there are enough food shops to keep the majority of self-caterers happy, and visitors can always make the short trip into Sintra if they require extra supplies. For reasons such as this, the use of a hire car is strongly recommended when staying in the self-catering villas of Galamares.
The town of Sintra is just 5km from Galamares, and should be explored to its fullest during your stay. Its finely-preserved 19th century architecture has lead to the town being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one that is often described as one of the most beautiful town’s in the world. Also within easy reach of Galamares is Cabo de Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, which is marked by a 144 metre high lighthouse.
The summer months of July, August and September are the most popular times for a holiday in Galamares, with an average daily temperature of 29C. Winters are extremely mild, and even the coldest month (January) has a daily average of 15C.
Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) is located 37km from Galamares, a journey which can be made in less than 45 minutes. The majority of UK airlines fly to this destination, including easyJet, British Airways and Bmibaby, so search around for the best deals.
