Make a holiday rental home or apartment in Giglio, Italy your home away from home

The beautiful island of Giglio is situated a few kilometres of the coast of Tuscany, in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The village is classed as part of the Grosseto Province, and is something of a romantic hideaway, being a secluded stretch of just 9km2 and sitting high on a hilltop offering stunning views for miles around. Having been inhabited since the Iron Age, Giglio has changed little since medieval times, and is a perfectly-preserved and enchanting destination for a relaxing break.

Things to do in Giglio, Italy

Giglio is separated from the Italian mainland by the Argentario promontory, and can be reached by regular ferries from Porto Santo Stefano and Orbetello.

Around 1,500 people reside on the island, and the Gigliesi people are revered for their friendly nature and great hospitality. A great way to meet both locals and fellow tourists is to head to the port area. Here you will find a number of fish restaurants, cafes, small bars and shops.

The island is almost entirely made from granite, making for an uneven, mountainous landscape. This granite has been used for centuries, with many Roman columns and edifices built using it. The highest point on the island is the 496m Poggio della Pagana, and the whole of Giglio is preserved as a nature area, with a vast percentage of its landscape covered by Mediterranean vegetation and pine forests, with this stunning countryside scenery being the key draw for many visitors every year. Walking and hiking are the best ways of exploring, and with a number of vineyards dotted around the island, sampling the local Ansonaco wine is a must.

The coast totals 27km, and is a mix of rocky cliffs and small bays, as well as four excellent beaches, each offering golden sands and relative peace and quiet next to the clean and clear waters. The main sites on the island of Giglio include the remains of a 1st Century Roman villa and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo.

Places to visit on holiday in Giglio, Italy

Those visiting Giglio will likely be tempted to also explore the Tuscan mainland during their stay, and this can be easily reached as there are frequent ferries from the island. There are many options as to where to head, but the province capital Grosseto is a great starting point.

Weather in Giglio, Italy

The climate in Giglio is extremely mild, with summer temperatures that are ideal for sunbathing on the beaches, as the mercury can rise well above 30C on the hottest of days. If you plan active daytimes of exploring and visiting vineyards it is suggested that spring or autumn may be a better time to visit, when the daily average is a cooler 22C.
