Golden / Kicking Horse Mountain Resort - From restaurants to ridges around Golden and Kicking Horse.
Arriving via the main arterial Trans Canada Highway into Golden, you are entering into an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Situated at the confluence of the mighty Columbia and the smaller Kicking Horse rivers, Golden is a town presently short on aesthetics but great on opportunity. A railroad, lumber town is gradually being transformed into a tourist mecca.
The tourist information office gives you all the detail you need whatever your interests. In summer there is golf, white water rafting, horse riding, hiking, hang gliding and a host of other activities. Good eating places abound and are good value for money. Probably the best is 'The Cedar House' about 5km south of town.
In summer or winter you have the option of visiting and/or staying at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. This is a relatively new resort having been in operation for just eight years, but with plans to rival the best that Canada can offer. It has a vertical just slightly less than Whistler but in winter the terrain is a worthy challenge for any snow sport enthusiast. Three large bowls are separated by ridges with appropriate names; Terminator, Redemption and CPR. At the top of the gondola at 7,700 feet you enter The Eagles Eye, Canada's highest mountain restaurant and the winner of numerous awards for great food and value. In winter enjoy the normally excellent powder conditions. In summer the trails are opened up for mountain bike enthusiasts.
KHMR has good eating places, particularly Corks at the Copper Horse Lodge. The Highland Lodge with its 'Local Hero' pub is a fun place for après ski drinks.
Two 'must does'; visit the Grizzly Bear refuge on Kicking Horse Mountain and stop off at the Northern Lights Wolf Sanctuary in the nearby Blaeberry valley.
You will hear a lot about Kicking Horse. Visit now so that you can talk with experience and enthusiasm.
