The world's second largest continent, Africa, is impossible to explain in these pages. However, travel to Africa and self catering African holidays are so diverse that every holiday maker will be able to find their dream holiday somewhere in this magnificent continent. Including the islands off the coasts, Africa is comprised of 53 countries, and every landscape known to man. Things to do in Africa

African safaris are hugely popular for holidaymakers. Lions, hyenas, giraffe, zebra, crocodiles, buffalo, elephants, camel and many other magnificent African animals can be seen in many parts of Africa, and safaris can be designed for all levels of comfort, from hikes into the wilderness with tents and rations (and armed guide is essential for these, as the African animals are wild and extremely dangerous) to guided drives around specific parks.

The coastal regions supply fantastic beaches of all description, and water sport conditions to suit all. The surfing in South Africa is of particular note.

Due to the original tribal make-up of Africa, culture is diverse. Culinary variations across the continent are huge, and there are some real culinary treats to be found. African music and dress also differs, and there are some countries, especially in the north, where dress code is very important for travelers.

Places to holiday in Africa

Egypt and Egyptian accommodation has great heritage. When you first think of Egypt, pyramids, sphinxes and temples spring to mind. There is of course more to the country than this, but the pyramids make sensational viewing. Egypt also offers desert treks, golf and a magnificent Red Sea coastline (Sharm el Sheik), where scuba diving and fishing are popular. You can also take a cruise down the River Nile, from which you can see parts of the country not usually discovered on African holidays.

Kenya has an incredibly diversity of landscapes, from wilderness to coast, forests to mountains and deserts to cities. Within 20 minutes of the capital, Nairobi, is the Nairobi National park, where game can be seen free within sight of the city skyline.

If Africa seems too far away, Morocco is only around 3 hours by air from the UK. Living in an African luxury riad in Rabat, Fes, Marrakesh, Casablanca or Tangier, you have access to some of the most colouful markets in the world, as well as a magnificent coastline and the chance to hire a 4x4 and try your hand at desert driving!

South Africa, one of the most popular destinations in Africa is a land of incredible diversity. The unspoiled coast boasts dramatic scenery, with waterfalls dropping directly into the ocean, and elsewhere, wide golden beaches sweeping into the horizon with surfers, body boarders and deep sea fishermen dotted out beyond the swells. Within a few hours drive of the coast are the plains and parks filled with animals, and battle grounds from South Africa's fiery past. Of special note is the battle field at Rorke's Drift, the battle behind the film Zulu.

Tunisia is a colourful and spicy land, with many festivals and celebrations all year round. It has Mediterranean beaches, perfect for windsurfing and sun bathing on empty beaches. Golf is also popular here, and resorts like Hammamet and Sousse provide top class facilities, and luxury villas in Africa.
