This area is famous for its dry stone bories, and there are some stunning examples in and around Gordes. People travel to Gordes from miles around to explore the Village de Bories which lies just outside the village. The village is an ancient settlement, whose dry stone houses, barns and walls have stood the test of time magnificently. There are also a great variety of Gallo-Roman artefacts in and around Gordes, from columns to baths, and even tombs carved into the bare rock of the Plateau de Vaucluse.

There is plenty of culture to enjoy when you travel to Gordes too. The weekly market which arrives in Gordes every Tuesday, is an excellent place in which to buy the best of local delicacies, and the wines of the Cotes de Ventoux should defiantly not be ignored. The Fete de Vin in July is the finest time to discover local wines, and during July and August, there are numerous jazz, theatres and classical music events. The Pol Para Museum is open all year, displaying some of the finest works by the Flemish artist.

There are some fantastic walking and mountain biking trails emanating in every direction from Gordes. Travelling by foot is one of best ways to get to know the area, and there are well marked trails through the forests and hills that surround Gordes. One of the best is the 8km loop trail into the valley below Gordes, where the Abbey de Senanque hides. The Abbey is almost an un-missable attraction when you travel to Gordes, and the honey, liqueurs and lavender products produced by the resident monks are extraordinarily good.

The nearby village of Menerbes is a fantastic destination for anyone with an interest in history. The two ancient dolmen sites around the village are mystical and exceedingly worth visiting. There are also a huge variety of mountain biking trails in the Menerbes countryside.

Due to its enchanting appearance, Gordes does attract large tourist crowds during the summer. However, these have largely dispersed by evening, leaving you to enjoy the village to yourself. During July and August, daily temperatures routinely peak in the mid-30’s (˚C), with the warm weather lasting long into the evening, perfect for evening strolls or eating your evening meal overlooking the countryside. Spring and Autumn are some of the best times to take a self catering Gordes holiday rental villa, as the crowds have gone, yet you can still expect daily temperatures around 30˚C. Travel to Gordes, France

The tiny Avignon Airport (AVN) is just 40 minutes from a holiday rental property in Gordes. However, there are only two scheduled routes from Southampton (SOU) and Exeter (EXE) airports, (both provided by Flybe), so a more realistic option for many will be to get a flight to Marseille (MRS), which can be reached within an hour.
