Make a holiday rental home or cottage in Gouarec, France your home away from home.
Gouarec is a charming Breton village that is proclaimed as something of a hidden gem by its previous visitors. Located in the Cotes d’Armor department of northern Brittany, Gouarec is far enough inland to be secluded and rural, but close enough the coast to be used as a base for day trips to the beach. Cycling is the most popular way of getting around this green village, and outdoor adventure fans will be well at home in the village cottages and farmhouses.
Gouarec is a popular destination for a cycling holiday, and with a large and reputable bicycle hire company based in the village getting out and about is an easy task. Joining an organised cycling tour is another option, and will allow you to meet like-minded individuals who are also keen to explore the countryside and put in the hard but rewarding mileage.
The unspoilt countryside really is the main draw of Gouarec holidays, with a number of nature trails and cycle paths meandering their way through the surrounding woodland before opening up to reveal some fantastic photo opportunities. Bon Repos is 5km away and the home of an excellent ruined abbey, making it a great destination for a walk, hike or cycle. Lovers of water-based sports such as canoeing, kayaking and fishing should consider Lake Guerledan, which is around an hour away by bike.
Gouarec has more than adequate amenities to look after its self-catering tourists, with a small supermarket, several bars, a bakery and a couple of other basic shops to be found. There are also a couple of excellent restaurants, with food extremely well priced compared to more tourist-orientated destinations nearer to the coast, and often coming with a complimentary glass of the excellent local wine.
Rostrenen (11km) is a popular destination for a day visit, as it lies in an attractive location on the banks of the Mael Carhaix Lake and is the home of a sizeable street market. The north coast of Brittany is around an hour away by car, and has a number of interesting and enjoyable potential destinations. An example is Plerin (54km).
The climate in Gouarec is similar to the climate in Great Britain, with summers generally warm and sunny and winters cold and often wet. As a result, the most popular period for a holiday in the village is the stretch between April and September, when you can be reasonably confident of low rainfall and some sunshine.
The ferry port at Saint-Malo is around an hour’s drive from Gouarec, so many UK visitors opt for this method in order to cross the channel. The nearest airport can be found at Dinard (DNR, 127km), which receives direct flights from East Midlands and London Stansted through budget operator Ryanair.
