The Grenoble area is based around the historic city of Grenoble and the Rhone River in the Isere department. It has stunning scenery and consequently tourism is a major part of local industry. The area stretches from the French Alps in the east, which has many popular winter ski resorts, to the west where the mountains are less high, with Grenoble as the centre of culture. In contrast, the nearby Chartreuse Regional Natural Park has many forested valleys.
