The larger of the beaches is on La Concha Bay, a beautiful horseshoe shaped bay where an island takes centre stage, and, being a bay the waters are a little calmer here than might be expected. In contrast, La Zurriola Beach to the east of the old town is a popular surfing and watersports beach as the waves here are bigger.

The Tourist Land Train runs visitors along the promenade, and in the evenings this same promenade makes the ideal place to enjoy a romantic stroll, following an excellent dinner.

The French city of Biarritz is only 50 kilometres (31 miles) to the east, or the popular Spanish city of Bilbao is about 100 kilometres (62 miles) to the west. Amongst other things, Bilbao is famous for the Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art.

Though cooler than Spain’s south, San Sebastian has a mild climate all year round. Summertime high temperatures are in the mid 20’s C, and both humidity and rainfall are low during the summer.
