Lighthouse Route, Nova Scotia - Seaside Adventures along the Lighthouse Route of Nova Scotia

The Lighthouse Route is a seaside travel area defined by charming fishing villages nestled on oceanfront peninsulas and broad ocean bays. The motorcar route encompasses the City of Halifax (the historic capital of Nova Scotia) along with the ocean bodies of St. Margaret's Bay and Mahone Bay. Halifax is a city known worldwide for its fine seafood and active summer festivals. Canada Day, Natal Day (celebrating the founding of the city) and other summer festivals include street fairs, fireworks, Tall Ship visits and wonderful hospitality. St. Margaret's Bay, just southwest of Halifax, has many scenic drives, including a trip to the famous Peggy's Cove preservation district. Peggy's Cove is an artist's haven, with crashing waves and magnificent rock outcroppings overlooking the pristine waters of the bay. The Hubbards, a market town with a charming harbour in the centre of St. Margaret's Bay, is centred in an area known as Ten Beaches for the numerous small beaches tucked into seaside coves. Driving along St. Margaret's Bay toward Mahone Bay, broad views of the ocean and fishing boats are available continuously, particularly as you approach the fishing villages on the Aspotagan Peninsula separating St. Margaret's Bay and Mahone Bay.

Mahone Bay includes the villages of Chester, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg. Mahone Bay is a boaters haven, dotted with small islands and unmatched beauty. The village of Chester is home to the Annual Chester Race Week, an international event attracting sailors from around the world. Mahone Bay is an extremely well preserved Colonial seaside village, with wonderful boating and shopping facilities. Lunenburg, a UNESCO world heritage site and frequent port of call for the HMS Bluenose (a Canadian tall ship), is only 20 minutes by car from Mahone Bay. Lunenburg is an extremely well preserved colonial-era fishing port, with its signature red fish warehouses, art and antique shopping and emerging gourmet restaurants. Boating, whale watching, shopping, fishing, beach combing, fine seafood dining and other seaside activities define summer along the Lighthouse Route.
