Simply the best

Date Submitted: June 13, 2009   Date of Stay: April 2009
As two couples travelling together, we were looking for an experience with the “real” Sicilian people and by booking at “Stadda” we got exactly what we were looking for and so much more! From the moment we met Antonella on the main street, we felt welcomed in to her community. After showing us the villa, she invited us “for lunch” – in our words a banquet of local taste sensations shared with Antonella and Gaetano – gracious hosts. We felt very welcome walking and shopping in the local area – particularly buying fresh fish from the fishermen - and even with our broken Italian we were able to get the message across to the locals. Food and wine (especially the Jumpy’s 2 litre special) were relatively inexpensive, and very tasty.

We found Sicily to be one of Italy’s best kept secrets, and Antonella the tour guide is one of Palermo’s best kept secrets. She loves her town, knows every interesting place to visit, and the right person to gain access if the destination happens to be closed! She is a font of knowledge, and has wonderful stories to relate about the places we visited. We have vivid memories of following her car in our car, but “when in Rome…” dictated that an Australian driver became like a driver from Palermo!!

The villa is more than adequate for four adults, is spotlessly clean, and very comfortable. Each bedroom is ensuite, with bathroom necessities supplied. It was wonderful to find the basics in the kitchen / fridge, and, when we did cook, we found all the necessary equipment, crockery and cutlery readily available. We can’t recommend “Stadda” highly enough. Thank you Antonella and Gaetano

Antonella is the"BOMB"

Date Submitted: May 09, 2009   Date of Stay: April 2009
Our trip to Sicily was made special because of our hostess, Antonella! She's the "bomb." She was a source of great information through emails prior to our arrival concerning train travel, what to bring & what to expect.

Upon arrival at the train station, she was there to pick us up and take us to her beautiful home. Later she took us out to a local restaurant to experience the local food. It was great. Her apartment/home is much, much nice than the pictures are able to show. It is quite large and has a full kitchen which allowed us to get patries from the local paneficcio for breakfast.

She took us to Palermo to see the sights and again experience her Sicily. She knows everything there is to know about where to go and how to get there.

Aspra at Easter

Jon, Lucia & Gabri   MK, UK.
Date Submitted: April 16, 2009   Date of Stay: March 2009
Despite having travelled far and wide, Sicily was missing from our list of destinations. Jon, particularly, wanted to visit the sites of the Godfather, so Aspra offered a perfect choice for us. The Stadda apartment was simply fantastic and well beyond our expectations. The private courtyard and roof top balcony were a very welcome addition to the tastefully furnished and very well stocked and spacious apartment. The front room is particularly impressive with its stone arches and assortment of pictures and art display. Antonella, our gracious host, really made us feel at home, even providing food at our arrival. She is a inexhaustible source of information about where to go, what to see, and importantly, how to get there quickly (you wouldn't believe how bad Sicilian traffic and driving can be!). Aspra is a traditional fishing village: a real taste of Sicilian everyday life (haggling is advisable, and don't pay more that 25% of the original asking price). You really need to try the freshly baked bread from a local baker (particularly the `pagnotta' with sesame seeds), the sweet ricotta-filled pastries from the Bar Pasticceria, and the hand-made ice-cream. And, of course, don't forget to taste those Sicilian oranges... One of our best memories is sitting on a grassy hill in the middle of Solunto, the Phoenician archeological site above Aspra, overlooking the breathtaking coastline around Porticciolo.

Memories are made of this

If there is a more welcoming hostess and host at a rental property anywhere in Europe we would be amazed. Antonella and Gaetano are astounding in the way they welcome their guests with an immediate invite to a meal at their own home with fresh typical Sicilian food cooked beautifully. From a trip to palermo showing us to sights we might not have found otherwise to a walk through the Palemo market, a trip around local area to show us where the best beeches are,the best restaurant etc etc. . ( not so sure about the driving though!) Antonella even found time to introduce us to someone in village whose mother had the same obscure sicilian surname as myself and has got him searching to see if our families are connected.
The property itself is superb with individual touches that make the house feel more like a home than a rented property. Well equipped kitchen ( although sadly we did not use it much because we were always out). Clean, tidy and everything you could wish for included some food and drink in the fridge when we arrived. It was always great to know we had such a place to return to after a long day away sight seeing. Aspra is very much a living breathing sicilian fishing village unaffected by the commercialisation of so many other places, and whilst that might mean it is less glitzy than other places it gives a real taste of Sicilian Life ( of which Antonella quite rightly is very proud). Be warned though that because of this you should not expect all the shop owners and bar staff to speak any English ( but you'll get by as we did)
As for Sicily itself we'll certainly return some time because we all found it such a wonderful island, from climbing 'La Rocca' at Cefalu ( with a great beach) for superb sea panoramas to Agrigentos Valley of Temples there are thousands of years of history. I'll remember standing in clear seas over rocky shore watching many different coloured fish swim between my legs whilst my face ( and nose) got burnt.
If you intend to use public transport the railway link into Palermo from Bagheria is very good but the station is actually a good 2-3km walk from the house( must be a bus link but we didn't need it) Also of course ifyou drive be prepared for the 'who dares wins' style of driving!
All in all a fantastic holiday ,fantastic apartment and fantastic owners.

Warmest of welcomes with introductions to local shops, stall holders, wines and anarchic driving style - Antonella makes this charming and very well equipped house a memorable experience from the first moment. Plenty going on in the village to enjoy a relaxing break but we used it as a base for touring the highlights of Western Sicily. Loved It.

Have already recommended it to others.

You will receive a very warm welcome from Antonella and Geatano, as well as the majority of the people in Aspra. Stadda is an extreamely well furnished and tastefully decorated home, with lots of very nice touches. If you do decide to drive, be carefull as you would not believe the driving habbits of the Sicilians.

A Holiday to remember

Date Submitted: May 21, 2008   Date of Stay: May 2008
Sularo was a well appointed apartment, it had everything one needs to feel at home. All our needs were provided for. The view from the terrace was beautiful and our hostess Antonella was one in a million. She met us at the airport and greeted us like family, she provided a wonderful lunch after our journey. Then over our time there she took us to places we could never have found on our own. We learnt so much about her country as we visited places of interest.
This is a holiday I can not recomend enough, if you like to see the history and and way of life of another Country, then Aspra is a must. There the people go about their everyday life, and the tourist fits in. The people of Aspra are kind, helpful and very friendly. Antonella made our holiday complete, we feel we have made a new friend. Joy Nigel and Emma U.K.

Fun in the Sicilian Sun

Date Submitted: May 09, 2008   Date of Stay: April 2008
A totally relaxing experience. Our hostess made us feel like part of the family from the moment we arrived (which included food in the fridge on arrival) and continued to assist us throughout the week often going out of her way to take us to places that we would only have dreamed of going to without her help. From shopping trips to boat trips to guided tours, Antonella excelled in all areas. The villa itself, although looking small from the outside, became a Tardis upon opening the front door with rooms appearing in all directions. A lot of work has gone into making the villa into a totally relaxing place to stay for any period of time. Most handy for the beach, there are a variety of restaurants/cafes to choose from, most especially for fruits of the sea. I shall definitely be coming back for more.

A Very Happy First Experience of Sicily

Sue and John   Toronto, Canada.
Date Submitted: May 07, 2008   Date of Stay: March 2008
Aspra proved to be a wonderful location for a first visit to Sicily. Aspra and its neighbouring seaside villages provided a lively, colourful, and non-touristic introduction to Sicilian life. Aspra is also very well located for visiting many of the major archeological and cultural sites of western and central Sicily.
We really enjoyed being steps from the seafront with its colourful collection of small fishing boats, beautiful views and friendly cafes for just sitting and watching the always interesting passing scene. A highlight of each day was our after dinner walk along the front with the lights of the town reflected in the sea and the lights of Palermo twinkling across the bay.
After a busy day of sightseeing, it was always a treat to return to our spacious, spotlessly clean and comfortable accomodation in la Stadda. The apartment was well represented by the pictures and descriptions on the website, though we also had some pleasant surprises like the main bedroom with its juliet balcony overlooking the living room and its luxurious ensuite bathroom. When we are travelling, we enjoy shopping at local markets and shops and preparing and eating dinner at home. The kitchen at la Stadda was exceptionally large, well provisioned - including a large bowl of lemons more flavourful than any we ever taste at home - and well
equipped for this, making it another highlight of each day.
Our hostess Antonella is a one-person goodwill ambassador for Aspra. On arrival, she drove us in her car (an interesting adventure in itself!) to show us the best places in town to shop; to help us buy excellent low-cost local wine; and to introduce us to some of the charming nearby seacoast. She and Gaetano then treated us to a very enjoyable dinner at their place.
In addition to providing very helpful information about "do-able" day trips, Antonella personally took us to Palermo for a day, introducing us to places most tourists will never discover.
There is much to see and do in the area, and our days were very full. Among the highlights were the serenely beautiful Greek theatre and temple at Segesta, the incredible mosaics and lovely cloister at Monreale, a day spent visiting villages in the mountains above Cefalu with a magical lunch at Gange, and, further afield, the Greek temples at Agrigento and the Roman mosaics at Piazza Arimena.
All in all, a great introduction to Sicily.

Aspra by the sea

Date Submitted: April 15, 2008   Date of Stay: May 2007
I had a special birthday & wanted to see a volcano so my husband & I went to Sicily. We found Antonella & Gaetano's accomodation on the net & having never used the internet for holidays before we took a deep breath & hoped that everything would be alright. Needless to say it was & more! Antonella & Gaetano were the most accomodating hosts we have ever come across - they even took time out on a Sunday to drive us to Mt Etna(a drive of some 3 hours) & organise a picnic lunch. Wonderful!
We particularly enjoyed shopping for fish, fresh fruit & vegetables down by the shore & listening for the local traders coming along our little narrow street to sell their produce. You could buy anything from fish to shoes to tablecloths. Just lower your basket over the side of the balcony & place you order.
If you go into Palermo with Antonella treat yourself to a jasmine ice-cream - delicious!
The downside of the holiday was the beach at Aspra. I realise that it is a working fishing village but I never set foot on the beach, it was just too dirty & dangerous - rubbish & broken glass etc. However the promenade was delightful, plenty of room for drying fishing nets & people.
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday & I would certainly recommend the accomodation & our genial hosts Antonella & Gaetano.

Owners Response: Glad to know you enjoyed your stay at Sularo apartment.
Please note that our bathing season starts late May beginnning of June when the local council attends to the cleaning of the beach on regular bases.
Besides, and this is a good new, Aspra has recently been included into a regional list as authentic "borgo marino" (fishing village) and added to an european project of turistic development that will improve the appearance of the village.

Aspra - A Delightful Surprise

Jack, Barbara, Marian & Bruce   White Rock, BC, Canada.
Date Submitted: April 13, 2008   Date of Stay: February 2007
Where else could you do your veggie shopping in housecoat and slippers? Cries of 'carciofi' in the narrow street our first morning lured us out the door for an unanticipated though delightful shopping experience: a vendor with a truck full of fresh produce and lots of selection advice from the neighbours. In fact, nearly everything about our week in Aspra was unanticipated but thoroughly delightful. Aspra itself is an unassuming seaside village with friendly folks, close to yet far removed from the hustle-bustle of Palermo, and in February, devoid of tourists other than ourselves. Our host, Antonella, ensured that every aspect of our visit was comfortable, enjoyable and interesting, from the warm welcome in her carefully maintained, well-provisioned and stylish apartment to a whirlwind personal tour of Palermo and further helpful suggestions for discovering the 'real' Sicilia. By car we did daytrips to the east (Cefalu and Castelbuono), to the west (Segesta and Erice), and to the south to the stunning ruins at Agrigento. Our sadness at having to leave after a week of adventure, sun and great food was eased by a delicious lunch with Antonella and Gaetano in their nearby home. Good or bad, travel nearly always encompasses the unexpected; thanks to Antonella, this trip was memorable for all the right reasons.

Do not miss the chance to holiday in Sicily with Antonella. The lovely accommodation and Antonella's welcoming attention made this holiday very special. The apartment was beautiful, stocked with provisions, and when we arrived Antonella had prepared food for us! This is not a holiday for those who want to spend their days on the beach, and you do need to be brave about driving. Public transport is available nearby, both bus and train. You can buy fresh fish at the harbour, straight from the boat in Aspra and we found a lovely local wine merchant too. Pizza is available very nearbyif you want a delicious take away, and every day you will hear the sound of small holders selling their produce. There is so much more to tell but not enough room here. Go on, experience Sicily, you won't regret it.

Better than home (well, almost...)

We have stayed at Antonella & Gaetano "stable" apartment during extremely hot and sunny August time. We've read up reviews on the website about host's hospitality and were pretty impressed with them. What we have experienced however was miles better than this review can express. Aspra, being a quieter extension of Palermo is conveniently placed for anyone wishing to explore Sicily. You could not ask for a better host or guide than Antonella, who is so passionate about everything Sicilian. From the very first moment we have met we felt we were part of Antonella's family. She was very friendly, generous and kind person. She has introduced us to a "different" Sicily. This was our second holiday on this beautiful island, but thanks to Antonella, we have discovered the real face of Palermo. We will never forget those night visits to the museum, the beautiful views of Palermo Bay from San Pellegrino or strolling down Mondello. After such eventful excursions we could always rest at "our" fantastic Stadda. How could we not recommend Gaetano and Antonella? Perhaps we could if we wanted to keep them and the whole experience to ourselves, however we feel that everyone deserves to be "touch" by such a wonderful persons. Grazie mille.

The house is accessable to importent shops and places and close to the seafront in Aspra.
Nothing was to much trouble for Antonella and her husbandwho even picked us up by late night from Palermo Station. Antonella, you are a wonderful woman with a lot of patience to answer all our stupid questions!

Antonella was a charming host, showing us the many sights of this beautiful part of Sicily with great local knowledge and insight.
Aspra is a beautiful fishing village very close to Palermo, with charming and friendly locals who made us feel very welcome and the coffee is fantastic!

Absolutely fantastic; Antonella thinks of everything! The appartment was very well furnished and clean, and had everything you could want including plenty of provisions. The first night we arrived, Antonella had laid out a sumtuous breakfast for us for the next morning, then invited us to join her and Gaetano on their speedboat the next day. As with many of the other reviewers she also took us on a sightseeing tour around Palermo a couple of days later, and was always there to offer help and advice if required. Well, where does one start! We first went to Aspra in June 2007, we rented the 2 bedroom apartment, which was spacious and well equipped and one could not fault it at all. Antonella and Gaetano are the most perfect hosts, nothing is too much trouble. We were taken to many places; Sicilia is so full of history, beautiful churches, buildings, landscapes and of course fantastic friendly people. As I like my food, one of the most memorable times was when we were, taken to a restaurant in Ciminna, sitting on the outdoor terrace overlooking the town having a five course meal, with wine, water, liqueur and coffee, a great meal, all for 18 euros each, I thought I had gone to heaven early!

We went back in November 2007 for 5 weeks, do we need to say anything else.

A beautifully modernised house, split into two apartments with lovely views of the sea from the main balcony - which got the sun most of the day so ideal for private sunbathing and relaxed eating in the evening. Everything you could need to hand. and cleaning service supplied. 2 minutes walk from the beach which was a bit 'flotsumed' in October but we were told the beach cleaning had stopped at the end of the season. All shops necessary for a relaxed existence close to hand and the local travelling 'phut-phuts' provided ultra-fresh food. Our host, Antonella, was wonderful, giving us a conducted tour of the area when we arrived and introducing us to her favourite fisherman to make sure we got the best of the very fresh fish. You really need a car to make the most of the superb scenery in the East of Sicily but there is a quick and cheap train service from Bagheria (a couple of miles away) to Palermo. If you haven't a car Antonella will pick you up at the airport - what service! Summary: Wonderful time - couldn't ask for more.

In Oct. 2007 my husband and I took my elderly father on a side trip to Sicily and booked Antonella's apartment just next to the beach at Aspra. We particularly enjoyed the introduction trip around the area the day after our arrival which Antonella organised followed by lunch at her home along with husband Caetano. Throughout our whole visit, Antonella was most helpful. We found Aspra to be a very friendly charming little place and after a couple of days we got to know most of the locals which added another dimension to our holiday. No doubt we shall be heading back to Aspra again as a base for our next Sicilian holiday.

Downloading our photos, just reminded us of our fabulous week spent in Aspra. From the time I decided to book this appartment as a surprise Birthday present for my partner, everything went smoothly thanks to Antonella the property owner who has been so helpful & friendly. The appartment was perfect, well equipped & furnished, clean and so accessible to local shops, cafe, restaurant, motorways & Palermo. Loved the balconies & seaview where you could get a real flavour of daily sicilian life in the narrow street. More than basic grocery was bought by Antonella so did not have to worry about shopping the next day. With her local & expert knowledge, she gave us a concise tour of Palermo on our last day which I have fond memory of. All this topped up with a full week of sunshine & temperature of around 20 degrees, made our first visit to Sicily unforgettable. Not to forget all the little touches (Birthday cake, bottle of wine). Lemons & satsumas will never taste the same!!

Comments from Owner Guestbook

We returned from holiday almost 8 weeks ago and it's been incredibly busy but wanted to give you feedback on the wonderful woman who owns the above property. Having never been to Sicily before, we didn't know what to expect but right from booking this property on your site, Antonella has been nothing but helpful. She communicated with us, sending us additional photos, tourism information and local tips about getting around. In the end, she actually picked us up from the airport for a nominal cost which in hindsight was a blessing when travelling with a tired 4 yr old. Once we were there, she offered to drive us to points of interest and did this over a number of days without expectations. Antonella also assisted us with onward accommodation and generously let us use her Internet connection. Her property is also one of the more well equipped ones we came across. It had everything down to shampoo, hairdryers and cotton wool! Extraordinarily clean and tidy with great views ...Marisa - NZ
