The flat was absolutely as described - spacious, very well equipped, atmospheric, clean and comfortable. It did accommodate six of us easily.

The situation was great - on the waterfront, in the town but also easily accessible for Collioure, the mountains, beach at Port Argeles, coastal towns to Spain. . .

Public transport - particularly the one euro bus - was very useful.

The owners provided exceptional service.

We would recommend the flat - and we hope to return!

Lots of good restaurants - fantastic fish market and local shops

Fab apartment, great location

Katie East Molesey, Surrey.
Date Submitted: September 10, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011
This is a fantastic apartment in a great location. We were amazed at how spacious it was, the photos on the website don't do it justice. The views from the beautiful windows are great and allow you to feel part of the bustling port below whilst remaining high above in the cool calm of the apartment, which brings me on to the air conditioning. This is fabulous and an absolute must in the heat of August. By providing those little extras (the welcome basket, free phone calls to landlines, dishwasher tablets and provision of beach towels) the owners make this a cut above a lot of self-catering accommodation out there. We are a family of five with three young children (a 6yr old and 3yr old twins) and were slightly apprehensive about the lack of outside space for them, although the roof terrace is great. We needn't have worried as the apartment was more than big enough for them to run around and there are plenty of beaches nearby on which to tire children out. In the evening it was also so easy just to pop downstairs for an ice cream and a walk round the port, stopping off at the merry-go-round next to La Tramontane, which is also great. The only downside to this apartment is the parking, especially when you first arrive and need to unload a car full of children and luggage. However, don't let this put you off as we managed to find a free parking space every day. Overall we had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this apartment.

Apartment on Port-Vendres Waterfront

Paul & Mandy Staffordshire.
Date Submitted: September 04, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011
The entrance to this apartment is in need of some TLC, but is very quirky and French and of the period of the building, however once inside the apartment this is soon forgoten and you enter a spacious, light and modern setting. There is one large major bedroom with full on suite, the second bedroom is smaller, but of a good size, again with full ensuite, the third bedroom is slightly smaller than the second, has ensuite shower and wash hand basin only, this is a shame as we thought it would benefit greately from having its own toilet because guests of this room have to use the toilet across the apartment hallway.

The kitchen, diner, sitting room is large and funcational, well equiped with all you require to make your stay pleasant, air con gets the apartment nice and chilly on those 30 + degree summer days, the apartment owners have thought it through, a selection of books, satelite TV, "we never had TV on", plenty of guides, things to do booklets etc, and the phone which you make make "FREE" calls to landlines allover the world.

Now to the best bit, throw open the two sets of double doors in the living room to reveal the sights, sounds and smells of Port Vendres, you can not get any closer, watch the many boats come and go, in this busy working port, the smell of freshly baked bread & brewed coffee, the restaurants cooking their freshly caught fish all this from the comfort of the apartment.

To sum up "fantastic" will not disapoint, we have been to the Port on several occasions and this was the best, we will be going to this apartment again.

P.S.
DO NOT be put of by entrance stairway my 81 year old father coped just fine, a small price to pay for such a great experience.

Paul & Mandy, Staffordshire.

Fabulous place to stay

Geoff Auckland, New Zealand.
Date Submitted: August 14, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
This property is "one out of the box" and we have already been recommending it to friends thinking of making the long trip to Europe for a holiday.
If you are looking for a holiday experience outside the tourist meccas, Port Vendres is worth considering. It is well placed as a central point for day trips [a car is essential for flexible excursions to the many points of interest, though the 1 Euro bus service is great value for local trips]. The apartment is also ideal for lazy days as it is so spacious and comfortable. It is far more than just a place to sleep as being in the centre of a small compact habourside commercial centre it has all you need within a few yards downstairs - good coffee, seafood restaurants, convenience store, supermarket, frock shop etc etc. As a working fishing port the fish is fresh and if cooking in making use of the excellent kitchen is your choice just landed fish is available most mornings on the habourside just along the road along with a stunning range of fruit and veg at the vege shop. There is also a comprehensive fish market at the far end of the town. Of course for breakfast the fresh croisants are also available downstairs. Hint - avoid pizzas - the local chefs may do marvelous things with fish but the pizzas are terrible!
The area is a mecca for those interested in early 20th century modern art with reproductions of famous works positioned at the spot where they were painted. Port Vendres, Coulliere, Ceret [where there is a fabulouse art gallery with the largest Picasso I have seen] are all worth a visit. The comprehensive website and info provided by Frank and Penny also give good info on possible excursions but it is worth while doing some homework on the fascinating history and politics of the area to get the most from your time here We spent 2 weeks with another couple and could have easily stayed longer.
The website for this apartment is exceptional - accurate and informative in so many ways. The property---- I would be happy to live there permanently, it is so comfotable and well placed with beautiful views over he harbour!!! The owners are great, very friendly and helpful, obviously keen to make your holiday experience the best they can.
As mentioned above we have been recommending [raving about] this property to our friends and would love to be able to return one day.

Nice flat, nice location

Roy, Jane and Erin London.
Date Submitted: August 01, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We had a great time in the appartment and enjoyed Port Vendres very much. The flat is well appointed and the efficient air con was very useful. The proximity to shops was convenient, but noise was not a problem. We tried all 7 boulangers on the Quai and concluded that the best was the one downstairs, but they often have no bread left by mid afternoon. And for fish, we thought the best was the kiosk on the Quai, turning left out of the appartment. It opens at 16h00 - watch for the French ladies pushing in! But enjoy the stir that such pushing in causes.
Watch also for the paving stones on the terrace which seem to be working loose: it's easy to trip.

RENT THIS APT. QUICKLY BEFORE YOU LOSE OUT!!!

Annie L. Glenside, PA.
Date Submitted: July 22, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
There are not enough good words in the English vocabulary to describe the magic and value of this apt. Just got back a few days ago, and already our hearts are breaking, having left our "home" in Port Vendres. This is the town you want to stay in; a real, live, breathing town full of characters and real people. Not just a tourist trap like Collioure, which of course was lovely to visit, but SO GLAD we didn't rent there like we had planned. This apt. had more than we could have asked for. We were 2 families, 3 people in each, 6 total. PERFECTION!!! The air conditioning was a welcome and needed luxury during our week stay in mid-july. Our view every a.m and p.m. was magical. Best part was watching the Bastille Day/National Day parade from our balcony, running out to join the people and vendors, and then coming back to watch it all from our perch above, again. Only sad part was no fireworks that night as it was too windy. That would have been the cherry on top...maybe another year. There was not one thing needed in this apt. that wasn't there! Frank and Penny are lovely people, so accomodating and the welcome basket was a lovely gesture upon our arrival. Be sure to eat at La Tramontane next door, at least twice, and tell Amanda, the lovely waitress that her American friends (two families) miss her smile and her service. AMAZING MOULES and pretty much everything. Also, a must is taking the Little Yellow Tain (petit train juene?) over the mountain to Collioure and back, from Pt. Vendres (tickets sold across from visitor center). The way back from Collioure is the exciting part, with a picture stop at Ft. Saint Elme, and narration in French and English. Also enjoyed the 3 hr. boat tour at end of Quai and underwater viewing area on boat. The fish market at the Criere (sp.?) 15 minutes walk away is SO worth it. Something for everyone, even those like me who don't fancy fish so much! Prepared foods to die for. Be sure to sample some local Banyuls wine. Still upset with myself for not bringing home a bottle!!! Day trip to Figueres/Dali museum nice, but NO SIGNS IN FIGUERES to direct you to museum. Good luck, Hope you speak Spanish. Day trip to Girona very nice too. Cathedral very moving as well as Jewish Call area. FRANK AND PENNY - YOU SHOULD BE PROUD TO HAVE SUCH AN AMAZING, WELL-DECORATED, WELL CARED FOR PROPERTY, FOR A FAIR MARKET VALUE. WE WILL RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO EVERYONE WE KNOW. We miss our home, and hope to return one day!

Excellent! Here you are in the middle of everything exactly as said in the information: just a few steps to the sea and boats, the shops and the restaurants. The apartment is excellent. Three very comfortable and personal furnished bedrooms with AC, a spacious nice lounge and a kitchen with all you need. The apartment is so well maintained and has all equipment you need. We didn´t miss anything.
Port Vendres is a place for culture (MacIntosh museum and dynamite factory outside Banyoul) but also a place where you can walks among the vineyards and swim on the nearby small plagues. It is easy to get a parking place if you come by car and the railway station is not far away.
Mrs and Mr Parkinson has also collected a lot of very valuable information for their guests about Port Vendres with telephone numbers etc. Read it and the comments in the guest book when you arrive and you have all the information you need.
We will absolutely recommend this apartment to our friends and when we will return to this part of France again we, of course, hope to stay here again.

Perfect place to explore the region

MOMAC Scotland.
Date Submitted: May 31, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011
The location is perfect for easy access to public transport from the delightful little tourist train to larger variety. The 1 Euro bus to anywhere in the region is a great scheme to take advantage of. When you're not off exploring the apartment is spacious and comfortable. You don't need to pack any of your favourite items from home because they are all provided for here. Port Vendres is also a good base, away from the more touristy parts of the region but in fairly easy reach of them all. A choice of good quality restaurants, bakers, supermarkets, and all other amenities are all only a few steps away. The whole combination makes it easy to just get on with enjoying your holdiay.

A wonderful apartment in a great location

Fortunate the holidaymakers who discover this immaculate and spacious gem. Frank and Penny have utilised the apartment's natural roominess wonderfully well, combining quality fixtures and fittings with a wealth of personal touches.
Although the apartment is surrounded by restaurants of average to very good quality, the kitchen is more than capable of doing justice to great produce available on the doorstep in this hard working and fascinating port. Fish lovers in particular should take an early opportunity to discover the fish dock. Ignore the no entry signs and follow the droves of locals to buy superb fish of every variety, and explore inside where there is a mouth watering array of the best oysters, prawns, clams etc to be found in France or anywhere else for that matter.
Port Vendres is also situated in the middle of great vineyards, and there are two good wine shops offering a range of superb wines. Don't miss out on those from the local Collioure appellation, particularly from Coume del Mas situated a couple of miles outside town and made by a Brit who had the very good sense to relocate.
We have travelled widely throughout southern France and have found nowhere else offering such high quality accomodation in a genuinely unspoiled location.

14 blissful days in Pt Vendres

Graeme New Zealand.
Date Submitted: October 07, 2010 Date of Stay: September 2010
In selecting this property, guest reviews convinced us that this would be our choice - both as to amenities and value for money.
Now back in New Zealand, we are taking the time to add to guest comments as we had felt them extremely helpful in making our decision.
We cannot speak too highly of what we found and enjoyed. The apartment was spotlessly clean, so many extras that are seldom found in this type of accommodation. Great CD music library, DVD movies, English TV channels and especially welcome was the free phone calls back to friends and family. The kitchen was so well equipped that we only ate out on a couple of occasions so cannot give a useful guide on restaurant recommendations. With seafood very much in mind, we regularly visited the market at the harbour entrance. What an incredible range of seafood, some still twitching! Highlights of our stay included the little yellow train trip to Collioure and spectacular return thru the vinyards with elevated views over Collioure, a ferry trip to Collioure and visit to it's two weekly markets (an absolute must) and a bus tour from Pt Vendres over the border to Spain and Barcelona. Be sure however to select the tour which has an English commentary as we were left in the dark by our non-english speaking driver. A walk thru the markets at Barcelona was something not to be missed. . We chose to be car-less for the first 4 days, travelling on the local train to Perpignan railway station to pick up a rental for the balance of our stay. This worked very well and our car GPS programmed with French road maps took some of the strain out of driving on a different side of the road in unfamiliar territory.
Although the peak of summer had passed, the provision of air conditioning throughout the apartment was most welcome as was the double glazing to ensure an undisturbed night.
We agree with other reviewers that the two flights of stairs were not an issue - especially when Frank raced our heavy suitcases upstairs upon our arrival. The view from the apartment balconies meant that there was always something to watch, street processions, overseas ships docking on the other side of the harbour and local fishing vessels coming and going - unloading of the daily catch within 100 metres of our front door.
We are retired Moteliers and have a critical eye on accommodation standards. Frank and Penny, you not only met but exceeded our expectations. Many thanks from Graeme, Jean, Ron & Denise.

Lovely Appartment in Excellent Position

Sylvia Gaillac, France.
Date Submitted: September 05, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
This appartment is very well equiped, comfortably furnished and in an excellent location. The owners are thoughtful and attentive to detail as displayed in the welcome pack, free phone calls/ wi fi, the provision of beach towels, dishwasher tablets, etc. The air conditioning was much appreciated. The proximatie to boulangerie, restaurants and other shops around the Port was great. Good to leave the car and wander out for an evening meal or drink. We found the Tramontane restaurant friendly with good food. The fish purchased along the Port at Poisonnerie Cote Vermeille was fantastic. You can eat oysters with a glass of local wine at the bar. We enjoyed the cliff walk to the very lovely but busy Collioure and returning by little train over the hills to Port Vendres. The old gunpowder factory at Pallailles beach was fascinating and the beach/cove one of our favourites. We recommend: a trip into the mountains to the village of Villfranche de Conflet (the yellow tourist train leaves from here but check train departure times as we were too late).:A car ride along the coast to Spain : Theremuch to do in the area so will leave some surprises for the adventurer in you!!! All in all a very enjoyable holiday.

Superb apartment in beautiful, working port

Chris P Tunbridge Wells.
Date Submitted: September 02, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
Port-Vendres is a beautiful place, less crowded than its more famous neighbour, Collioure. With a variety of boats (fishing, yachts, cruises and cargo ships) and the mixture of largely French and Catalan tourists and locals, I think one gets more of an authentic, working port type experience.

This apartment is a great way to appreciate the place. It is right in the heart of the port, looking out directly over the marina with most of the main restaurants and shops close by. The boulangerie provided breakfast, the friendly Proxy shop our basic provisions and the Super-U the main shopping. We’d prepare dinners in the well-equipped kitchen which, unusually for self-catering places, was a joy to cook in.

Opening up the curtains each morning, we were met with bright light and colours from the marina and the sounds of shoppers, cafés and boats. In the evenings the lounge windows remained wide open without insects coming in to bother us as there hardly seem to be any here. The apartment is spacious and light and a lot of thought appears to have been put into it. The free wi-fi and phone calls abroad saved us a fair amount of money. The owners are friendly and helpful, even providing a lift up to the station to avoid lugging our cases up the hill.

We had a public transport holiday and came up from Barcelona by train. We used buses to get up and down the coast, excellent value at 1 Euro wherever you want to go, and we found that the St Cyprien service was best for the number of beaches one could visit. St Cyprien was our favourite beach as it was the only one we found with proper sand. The marine life is abundant along the beaches and in the harbour and one doesn’t need to take a sous-marine cruise to see it. A tourist thing that is well worth doing here is the Petit Train. This goes to Collioure via the coast road and then back to Port-Vendres via the hills and the fort between the two communities, providing a very pleasant ride through the vineyards.

I would also recommend spending time in the local wine cellars where much sampling can be done and where one takes in plastic bottles to be filled with cheap local plonk, perfectly good for the table or for cooking. One thing I would not recommend is the eating out in Port-Vendres. It is ok for snack lunches and for seafood. But when you want a rest from fishy meals you are faced with a very restricted range of other dishes to choose from.

Overall, we would highly recommend this apartment.

Thoughtfully designed and well furnished flat, and above all - AIR CONDITIONED!!!!!

Here in the heat of a South of France summer, after a hard day holidaying we loved to come back to the cool of this great apartment.

Good (but not particularly expensive) restaurants all around; fantastic car trips along the coast into Spain; a boat trip to Collioure; swimming at a couple of beaches nearby; hills, vineyards, walks, history, architecture, etc, etc....! We needed more time, so will have to return next year.

What a fabulous place to live - our daughter didn't want to leave.

We would recommend this area, and especially this apartment, to everyone!

Lovely apartment - well-equipped and clean, and an ideal location for shops and restaurants.

The owners went out of their way to ensure everything was perfect.

We knew that there would be a great selection of good restaurants within a few yards of the apartment, and that there were lots of activities, beautiful countryside and interesting historical locations nearby, but we were surprised by the lovely beaches only 15 minutes drive away!

We found Port-Vendres quieter and more friendly than its trendy nut expensive and overcrowded neighbour Collioure.

We will certainly be recommending this superb apartment.

Glad to have trodden in Charles Rennie MacKintosh's footsteps, both in staying in such an inspiring place and walking the paths from which he painted (Tourist Office will book guided walks).
Fantastic weather, glorious location, outrageously seductive accommodation - so we really enjoyed ourselves and wished we had come for longer.
If you want to cook visit the fish market at the entrance to the port - eye-wateringly expensive but magnificent fish.
More economical is the relatively new Carrefour just off the by-pass in Argelès which seemed to us the best supermarket by some way. Liked the wine shop opposite the top car park. Good wine from Rouissillon and at reasonable prices.
Didn't really eat out other than at the Tramontane - basic but good value. Previous visits suggest the Côte Vermeille is the best restaurant in the town but we also ate well in the Llagut (hotel at end of bay) in Banyuls. Still these are all rather marginal in the light of the superb setting and delightful weather.

A wonderful holiday. The flat was all we could ask for, and the weather, apart from a few days of the wild wind, mild and pleasant. We even managed to swim on a couple of days.
The coastal trip to Cadaques was lovely, the roads at this time of year very quiet. Lunch at Casa Nun very good - very friendly folk.
The old dynamite factory at Paulilles is worth a visit; there is also a very nice walk along the coast, much easier than Cap Béar.
Collioure is much closer than I thought by foot, however if you go there do not eat at Le Puits. We had one of the worst meals ever. Côté Patio, rue Doct Coste, used to be good but it was closed for the holidays.
As Glaswegians we loved the idea that one of our heroes, Charles Rennie MacKintosh, spent his last days just along the road.
It has been a really relaxing two weeks.
Thanks a lot Penny & Frank.

Lovely apartment, well equipped and clean. Ideal location for shops and restaurants.
We would recommend Chez Pujol - excellent food and friendly, but professional, staff. The Tramontane was closed for most of the time we were here, but we had one meal there, the night we arrived, which was good.
We loved popping down to the bakery below every morning for our croissants.
The Côte Vermeille is over-priced and pretentious - the view was of the dockyard and there were cars parked outside!
Collioure is lovely - we walked the way that the "Petit Train" goes which took us nearly two hours! There is a quicker route, allegedly!
Lovely beach at Paulilles - would highly recommend this. It's situated within a managed nature reserve, on the site of the Nobel Dynamite factory. It's a very clean and well-managed site. Next best beach would be Le Racou. Both of these beaches are within 15 minutes drive from the apartment, but in different directions.

Spent a very pleasant week here in Port-Vendres and found the flat to be light, spacious and most importantly cool!!! Indeed far better than our initial reaction may have been upon sight of the entrance and staircase!!
Appreciated the little touches like dishwasher tablets and free phone and it is clear that Frank and Penny have added a personal touch to the accommodation.
Loved the beaches at Paulilles and our personal favourite Le Racou, together with some fond memories of Collioure where we had a wonderful time - just wandering around the harbour and eating in the restaurants (30 minutes walk - including our 3 year old walking).
Enjoyed the wonderful architecture in Perpignan and overall found the location fantastic as a base for short trips in the car to surrounding area.
Found La Tramontane very good and "Menu du Jour" good value yet Le Pescatore disappointed - overall best restaurant for mussels and warmth of service was La Fringale at end of quai.
Thanks

Exceedingly light, airy comfortable apartment. Beautifully appointed and we couldn't ask for anything more. Great views and position and Frank and Penny go the extra mile including a welcome pack and fresh flowers on arrival. Tried most of the restaurants - La Tramontane wins for friendliness and quality. Had a lovely meal at L'Archipel although the surroundings reminded us a little bit of hotels in Bournemouth in the 1960's!!
Thanks again and all the best, Bob and Maggie

What better place to escape from the November blues than this beautiful apartment in the lovely Port Vendres. It was well equipped to a very high standard and even provided us with cds, dvds and a selection of books to suit every possible taste. The little terrace among the roof tops that caught the lunch time sunshine.
It is a beautiful part of France ,lots of good walks both along the coast and among the vine covered hills .Plenty old fortifications to explore.
At this time of year the roads are quiet and beaches empty, but there are still plenty of restaurants open and just 30minutes walk away is Collioure with its many shops and galleries.
This is the best self catering accommodation we have ever had.

We have been using self-catering facilities across the world for 30 years and have certainly been to scores of them. This is as good as any we have experienced: it is spacious, has a great location and views and is exceptionally well-epuipped. It certainly more than lives up to its billing. All of this despite the unprepossessing staircase which most definitely doesn't prepare you for the apartment at the end of it.
The town is a bustling and quite work-a-day port which creates a preferable atmosphere to that of the wall-to-wall tourism in nearby Collioure; that said the town has a fantastic location and good services including a superb poissonerie. Local beaches are adequate if sunbathing is what you do and the surrounding countryside is spectacularly scenic. Even parking was easy although it occasionally required crafty hovering and circulation in the very adjacent, free, public carpark.

All in all a highly recommended property and location especially for francophiles but also for anyone who wants a high quality facility in an independent and very French setting.

This apartment is beautifully presented and very well equipped with everything you could possibly need, and more. It is spacious, clean and in a wonderful position. The owners have taken great care to think of your every need. A real home from home. Though up two flights of stairs and with no lift, my elderly 80 year old parents found this no problem. The views were fantastic, always something going on. Above the quay, up the stone steps, the locals gathered for folk dancing, we would have loved to have joined in. Restaurants and food shops were excellent, the butchers by the obelisk have some delicious ready made dishes, people were very friendly. Buses were excellent value with helpful courteous drivers (very unusual). We caught the Land Train to Collioure, it arrived at the due time but was full, the driver told us he would send another in 5 minutes for us and 2 other people. We weren't convinced but sure enough along it came the 6 of us had it to ourselves.Would recommend it, the return was a bit hairy but well worth it, the views were breathtaking.Frank & Penny leave meticulous instructions for everything you need to know. We all thoroughly enjoyed a memorable holiday in the most of idyllic of settings.

Thanks to Penny & Frank's wonderful apartment, we have all had a glorious 2 week's holiday.

Whilst our primary aim was to play competitive golf between ourselves ie "The Last of the GB Summer Wine Tour", the location, aspect, quality and facilities of the apartment far exceeded our expectations.

The area is vibrant, colourful, busy and the scenery very photogenic.

We found the locals very friendly and understanding towards four seniors whose knowledge of French left a lot to be desired.

One to be remembered and recommended.

A thoroughly comfortable and enjoyable stay

sue_the_traveller Sandhurst/Berkshire/UK.
Date Submitted: July 06, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
This is a genuine first class apartment. It is superbly located right on the waterfront, with all the action to view of the coming and goings of private yachts, fishing boats, and, set over on the main port, the occasional international container ship. I understood this was possibly one of the deepest seaports along the coast and, during the second world war, had played host to the Bismark. Port Vendres has several bakeries, a traiteur, 3 little supermarkets, wine cellars, loads of places to eat and a few boutiques. All in all, everything we could need to thoroughly enjoy our stay.

Loved sleeping in the front bedroom with the windows open and listening to the wind in the yachts’ riggings at night. My husband suggested having the windows open was a bit noisy at dawn with the little street washing truck but, what the hell, you’re on holiday and watching the dawn come up over that harbour was one of the highlights. The colours were breathtaking, and you can always go back to bed after and be wakened by the smell of freshly baked croissants from the bakery below.

Cannot fault the apartment. Excellent bed linen and towels. Mattresses were good and firm. Well thought out furniture and accessories. Masses of space and can easily sleep 6. My husband was particularly appreciative of the wifi connection which had excellent links.

Things we did in the area: Just 1 euro to take the bus to Perpignan for a day’s shopping; a drive up into the hills towards Torre del Madeloc gives spectacular views but needs a strong head for heights because the road is very very narrow with sheer drops, visit to charming Banyuls, some lovely local walks, great to be able to buy fresh fish right on the quai.

Have no reservations?
This apartment meets all requirements for that perfect holiday, It is rare to to find such a spacious and well appointed holiday let with a location directly onto the marina and promenade.
Port Vendres is a lovely little town, much less touristy than nearby Couliore but still has plenty of restaurants and shops to keep you supplied.
When you also factor in a splendid local bus service that serves all the coastal region from Perpingan to the Spanish border at a fixed cost of 1 euro per journey, it is possible if you do not want to drive, to have a holiday without a hire car.

Great from beginning to end!

An excellent experience all round from the initial contact with the owners, Frank & Penny, to our final departure and prompt return of deposit. The beautifully equipped, light, spacious apartment was perfectly positioned directly on the harbour, but with no unwelcome noise problems. Using the boulangerie/cafe next door we could throw open the balcony doors and enjoy our oven-warm baguettes for breakfast whilst watching the fishermen land their catch and watch the small (and sometimes large!) craft coming and going.
The efficient aircon was a boon for the warm nights and all mod cons (cable TV / phone, DVD, ADSL connectivity etc.) were available. A wealth of crockery, utensils etc. - enough for 8 people - made the dishwasher worthwhile although we were mainly tempted to use the wide range of restaurants close by.
Free parking in the nearby car park (2 minutes walk) was not a problem although it may be more difficult in very high season.
Port Vendres is superbly positioned for exploring the area both sides of the Franco-Spanish border and the owners provide lots of literature, books etc. to assist. Even beach towels are provided to save the weight of bringing them with you.
All in all an excellent experience with more attention to detail than I have come across elsewhere. Seriously recommended!!

Waterfront apt. in Port Vendres

Grainne K. Flanders, New Jersey, USA.
Date Submitted: May 28, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
Myself from the U.S.A. and my girl friend from Dublin met up and rented this apt. for a week in May 2009. The apt. had everything anyone would need. The bedrooms and bathrooms were wonderful with enought room for seven people to stay. The kitchen had everything a gourmet cook would need even though we eat out most of the time, as there are great restaurants nearby. The views from the apt. were fantastic as well as the weather. Collioure about five mins by bus is a great place to spend the day. We flu into Barcelona and took the local train to Cerebere where we changed and got the local train to Port Vendres. However getting back into Spain was very difficult as the local French tourist office (2 mins walk away) was not at all helpful and would not supply us with any info about connecting trains to Spain. Luckily we met a wonderful lady (Pam, originally from N' Ireland) who has an apt. close by and insisted on driving us to Cerebere early on Saturaday morning, if not for her we would have never made our flight out of Barcelona. We would defiantly reccommend this apt. to families, couples and girlfriend getaways. One last thing if you don't speak French there are not alot of French people who speak English.

Our holiday in Port Vendres

The Maz Dublin, Ireland.
Date Submitted: May 27, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We arrived by train from Barcelona 17th May then on to the apartment on the quay. Trust me, the photos are all true, a real home from home with all mod cons and ideally located. Right next door is a wonderful cafe where we bought hot croissants and baguettes for breakfast. Don't worry about the stairs you will get used to them! The welcome basket was much appreciated especially if you arrive late. There is an abundance of restaurants literally on your doorstep but if you want to go further afield try Coulliere. WARNING!! If you ask for duck it must be tres bien cuit or else it will be quacking at you!! There is a regular bus service but you need to get a taxi back if late at night. A day trip to Perpighnan is recommended 1 euro and fantastic scenery all the way. Loved every minute of our stay in the apartment.

Lovely Apartment, Lovely Place

Robbie S Cheshire.
Date Submitted: February 17, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2008
I had the pleasure of staying in this apartment last September, although it's taken me a little time to write a review! This is a really lovely apartment. We had six adults and two toddlers, and while the place isn't perfectly suitable for infants, it's still pretty good for them if you're paying attention. For adults, though, it's excellent. There was plenty of room for the six of us, even with the children, and opportunities to find a bit of space with the ensuite bedrooms, the spacious front room and the pleasant sun-trap balcony at the back. Our experience with Frank and Penny, the owners, was pleasant and efficient, and the pricing of the apartment was very reasonable. Possibly the biggest compliment I could pay it was that I would happily live there!

A few comments about the area itself. Port Vendres is basically a working fishing port, and although the waterfront is nice and has some pleasant restaurants, it can't compare with nearby Collioure for postcard-pretty views. The nearest beach is a bit of a hike and the sea not particularly inviting. That said, Collioure is only a 30 minute walk along the coast road, the railway station (with connections to Perpignan, Collioure and Spain, inc Barcelona) is only about 10 minutes walk from the apartment, and there are some good tourist links. If you fly to Perpignan the train is a 30/40 min ride, and cabs are not hugely expensive. Although a car would be useful, we managed just fine without one.

I couldn't finish this review without mentioning what, for me, is the true highpoint of the area. If you are feeling adventurous and are reasonably fit, you can follow the coastal path around the bay to the west and walk along the headlands. A two-hour walk (complete with lots of gasp-worthy natural beauty, crashing surf, plunging cliffs etc) brings you down to a sandy beach that backs on to a vineyard. This is "les clos de paulilles", a winery which not only does free tasting sessions during the day, but also offers an excellent evening set menu, with each course designed to complement their (lovely) wine. If it sounds like I'm a walking advertisement for the place, I make no apologies - I'd put the meal my wife and I had there in the top 5 meals I've ever had, and that includes a lot of good restaurants.

All in all, the apartment comes highly recommended, as long as you're not just after a beach holiday and you're prepared to explore a bit further afield than just Port Vendres itself...

We had a lovely time over New Year 2008/9staying in this apartment, which is clean, comfortable, centrally situated and has fantastic views over the harbour. Furthermore our 4 month old baby slept better in the travel cot in the apartment than she has ever slept at home! Must be the fresh sea air...!
The owners were extremely helpful and friendly.

There
was more than enough room for three couples;it was a pleasure to stay here. The air conditioning was a huge plus. The position on the waterfront was superb, with so much to see from the lounge windows. There were two supermarkets within walking distance and lots of smaller shops, bars and restaurants right outside the front door. All this without the noise and rowdiness of some resorts. This was a five star apartment and resort that i recommend to anyone.
JR and party.

The apartment was perfect for our family (3 children aged 5, 8, and 11). Spacious, luminous and well-equipped. Having seen the traffic jams to get into neighbouring Collioure, we were relieved to return each day to the relative tranquillity of Port Vendres. All amenities are close to hand - pharmacy, boulangerie, grocery, fresh fish, tourist office, post office and a range of restaurants all on the doorstep. You need a car to get to the sandy beaches, a few kilometres away because the beaches within walking distance are not very child friendly. Overall a super location - we'll be back with the grandparents!

A marvellous climax!

Date Submitted: August 26, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2007
Our week in the apartment was a marvellous climax to our three week motoring holiday along the Pyrenees. The apartment was everything and more that we had hoped for and the four of us couldn't fault it.
Before our arrival we were a touch concerned about the two flights of stairs as one of us is disabled with crutches but he didn't find them a problem and was easily able to navigate them several times a day.
We also had no problems with parking as there is a disabled parking space directly outside the apartment and we were able to use it all week.
We ate in a number of local restaurants, the best of which was the Tramontane just along the quay - very good food on every occasion.
We had a super time at the apartment and have every intention of returning in 2009. Port Vendres and the neighbouring Collioure are lovely and buzzing and the surrounding areas are fascinating to explore. The Dali Museum just over the Spanish border in Figueras was superb and the drive along the coast road was breathtaking.

Date Submitted: August 26, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We stayed at this wonderful apartment in August 2008 and, quite simply, it's the nicest place we've been. The apartment is beautifully appointed throughout, spacious and well equipped. Air conditioning is seriously brilliant - an absolute must in the South of France. We enjoyed sitting up on the back terrace eating barbecued squid bought from the Criee fish market and drinking chilled rose wine. At night, sitting round the dinner table playing cards or reading, we couldn't quite believe how pretty the Marina looked with lights twinkling and diners below tackling groaning plates of oysters, crabs and langoustines. Actually, if you had the inclination you could easily stand at the apartment's front window and hit a million euro yacht with a stone. Not that I'm recommending that particular course of action, just to give you an idea of how close you are. My wife's teenage sons each had their own ensuite rooms - tons of space for everyone. I think this apartment and it's location is pretty good for all different age groups - the boys took off on a couple of nights, jumped in a taxi to Collioure where they enjoyed a few beers and sat on the beach till late enjoying the Med atmosphere. They also managed early morning runs around the beautiful port and the surrounding area. We stayed in bed. Port Vendres itself is great - fabulous bakeries, pattiseries, fruit and vegetable sellers. The produce is really wonderful - you won't eat better tomatoes outside of here or Italy. Most of the restaurants are really good although we tended to 'eat at home' - the chance to cook with all that beautiful stuff was too much for my inner Jamie Oliver to resist. Most days we hopped in the car and drove the 10 minutes down to Argeles Sur Mer and lay on the beach. Now and then we were tempted to do something cultural but, to our shame, usually thought better of it and headed to Argeles. Argeles has wonderful beaches - watch the sudden winds though - I had to run after a parasol while trying to keep my shorts from falling down. Not good. Every day it was a real pleasure to return 'home' to Quai Pierre Forgas and that wonderful air conditioning. We wouldn't hesitate to return and would unreservedly recommend this apartment to everyone.

Don't go on first impressions, climb the stairs walk into the apartment, open the windows and say wow.The apartment is very well planned comfortable with everything you could ask for. Within a short walk there is plenty of parking a wealth of restaurants and a supermarket.
Being located in a working port you get lulled into the lazy comings and goings of daily port life, with it's background hum adding to its overall charm.

It's position lends it self to sight seeing with quick trips into northern Spain and lovely walks around the rugged coast line.

Our only moan would be the 2 flights of stairs to heaven, but within a couple of days we had got used to this and it was a very small price to pay for the wonderful location.

Jh Pangbourne

Lovely flat, superb location

margarine Kent, England.
Date Submitted: August 24, 2008 Date of Stay: December 2007
The flat is every bit as described on the website, tastefully furnished and decorated with a very well equipped kitchen. My husband and I stayed over Christmas and found that Port-Vendres was very active with plenty of restaurants and bars open. We liked the Tramontane. We benefited from excellent weather and could make use of the rear terrace for pre-lunch drinks - a real bonus in a second floor flat!
My husband is disabled and we were always able to park in the designated "disabled parking bay" almost immediately outside the flat. Inside the flat there are few steps, so he had no difficulties at all, and the two flights up had a secure hand rail.

Port-Vendres is an ideal base from which to visit this beautiful part of France and nearby Spain. The Owners provided a useful "Guide for Guests" which suggested trips for days out, as well as giving practical information about the flat, the town and the area.

We have reccommended this flat to friends and family.

The flat is as gorgeous as the photos show but finding somewhere to park in Port Vendres in the summer can be a nightmare, especially with a large car with roof box on.
The road outside is very busy but excellent double glazing means it can't be heard with the windows closed.
Overall a good place for families with older children or couples as the stairs are a bit of a killer especially when carrying shopping or anything else heavy!
