Lovely, relaxing apartment in beautiful old town, which is very romantic and full of lovely shops, bars and restuarants. No beaches nearby but we hired a car and found some gems. Quite noisy at night but as no one goes to bed very early, doesn't really matter. Friendly, helpful owners. Would recommend.

Take ear plugs!!!!!!!!!

Gavin London.
Date Submitted: June 22, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011
The bathroom door has a a crack runing the length of the glass which will soon break, not good if you have kids.

An advisory note to mention the need for ear plugs would help, I knew about the restaurant directly underneath but no mention about the building site directly opposite which starts at 8am, a tad early when the noise from the restaurant only stopped about 5-6 hours earlier.

I read one post by someone on traveladvisor about the smell around the beaches, as as it was only one assumed it wasn't serious.
The smell of rotten eggs is pretty disgusting when sat on a beach sunning yourself.
Have any of the locals talked to the local council about this?

I don't understand the traffic free claims either, there seemed to be cars moving around the old town at ALL times of the day, it only seemed to be small alleys that they didn't enter.

We enjoyed Alghereo but be advised that the rental bikes are very cheap and uncomfortable.
I would recommend the use of a car and a 60 minute drive to La Pelosa beach, jaw droppingly beautiful BUT very busy.
Owners Response: I am very sorry that you found a crack in the glass in the bathroom door. Of course as soon as we entered the flat after you left and saw it, we had it replaced. We would have done so immediately had you contacted us during your stay. The building work is new and apparently is to make safe a building that was bombed in the 2nd World War. I will inform any guests of it's progress. Hopefully it will be over soon!
The old town of Alghero does have traffic restrictions but is not completely traffic free. Locals do live in the old town and have access rights. The flat is in the heart of a very old and beautiful town where people live and go about their daily lives. It is also where the best restaurants ("Andreini" below has a Michelin star) and bars are and the best place to soak up the atmosphere. For many this enhances their experience of Italian culture but some people may prefer the peace and tranquillity of the countryside.

Lovely apartment in the old town

Julian London, UK.
Date Submitted: April 23, 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011
I visited Alghero many years ago, staying in the new town. I returned with friends at Easter and thought how much nicer it would be to stay in the old town, with its historic character and ideal location. I wasn't disappointed. Antonia and Roy's apartment was ideal, with all the necessary facilities, including iron and washing machine to catch up on some washing we had accumulated earlier in our trip. The kitchen is well stocked and there are some dvds and cds if you want to spend a night in. There are plenty of places to eat and drink but it is also nice to have the option to self cater. The apartment is spacious and well laid out. The rooms are cool, which I imagine in summer is welcome, although at easter was not so necessary; however, once the windows and shutters are open there is ample light. The furnishings are a little old fashioned for my taste but in a fairly neutral way, which means that they don't offend, and in any case are consistent with the "old town" atmosphere of the place. As mentioned elsewhere the double room has a huge comfortable bed. The only comparable bed that I have slept on, size wise, was in an old palace in Rajasthan, so it helped to conjure up some happy memories. There was a small leak in the bathroom which I texted Antonia about and she had it fixed the same day while we were out and about. It didn't spoil our holiday at all. All in all I would recommend the apartment for anyone who wishes to make Alghero their base for a holiday in one of the loveliest islands (if not the loveliest) in the mediterranean.

Wonderful apartment - great location

KG & family Luxembourg.
Date Submitted: February 06, 2011 Date of Stay: October 2010
We enjoyed staying in this lovely apartment very much. The location was just perfect, minutes away from the sea views and restaurants. The apartment is tastefully furnished and the bathroom is large and luxurious. The apartment was impecably clean. Kitchen is well equiped. Our children enjoyed the games they found in the appartment. Dealing with Antonia was pleasure, she was very attentative and always quickly responded to my emails. We enjoyed our stay there and are planning on coming back! Our favourite restaurant was Hosteria de Pepi Gall, where we enjoyed our "happy hour" apperitive with tasty snacks offered with the drinks follwed by delicious dinner and sweets. The staff was very friendly and we learned there everything we needed about the local wines which are delicious. We made a day trip to the beautiful Maria Pia beach, we walked all the way there and back! We have lots of wonderful memories from our Alghero holidays.

such a treat!

Date Submitted: October 14, 2010 Date of Stay: October 2010
well, the pictures on the website impressed me, but it was nothing to the thrill of arriving in to principe umberto knowing it was all ours for the duration of our stay. Everything we needed for a family trip was there. A great selection of books, games for adults as well as children. Beautiful high ceilings, cealings, the biggest and most beautiful master bedroom I have ever slept in. And all this is right in the middle of the old town of Alghero. We seriously discussed whether or not we should save up so that we could buy a place just like it. but to be honest, the location is only matched by the fabulous interior design. Cannot recommend this place highly enough! The apartment we visited in Bosa afterwards would typically have been ticked all our boxes, but our time in principe umberto meant nothing could compare. Go there, (just not when I want to go!), you will not be disappointed! Deirdre and family, dublin

Alghero old town

Ray C Herts.
Date Submitted: April 06, 2010 Date of Stay: March 2010
Very well equiped apartment in the heart of the old town. Many bars & restaurants close by. We used the Casablanca restaurant 4 times. Avis car hire office is a few minutes walk away. We drove to Bosa & Stintino which are both nice. Got the train from Alghero to Sassari. Nice train ride but didn't think much of Sassari.
Journey time on bus from Airport to Alghero center about 30 min's, cost 70cents. Buy tickets from machine in A/P terminal. Apartment is 10 min' walk from bus stop. Old town is cobbled so a bit difficult for buggies/wheelchairs. Apartment is up 1 small flight of stairs. Remember to turn the water heater on when you arrive. 4 poster is massive. Modern fully equipped kitchen ( no microwave ) Plenty of towels provided. I'm pleased with the choice I made for our stay in Alghero.

We stayed here for 11 days in June 2008. It was quite simply the best holiday we've ever had. The apartment is immaculately kept and superbly equipped. Our two children (then aged 3 & 1) still talk about it and every so often will ask when we're going back. Soon, I hope

Owners Response: Thanks so much Diarmuid for leaving such a great review and it would be lovely to have you back again sometime.
Best wishes, Antonia

Aladinns Cave

Cheerful traveller Tiptree, Essex, England.
Date Submitted: October 21, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2008
I review this as an Aladinns Cave as there is everything you could possibly need in the apartment. The store cupboard had a umbrella for beach, rain and childs buggy! Cd's, books, childrens toys I could go on and on. Lovely new trendy kitchen with lots nice crockery etc. It is on the first floor above a very good quality restaurant which can be quite lively late into the evening!! We enjoyed stepping out onto the narrow cobbled steets into the atmosphere. There is a nice little bakery around the corner and the lady always waved to us. We found everybody to be hospitable and helpful. The beach is 15/20 minute stroll away and there are beach mats in apartment, well there is everything in the apartment!! 5/10 minute walk to the airport bus stop or taxi rank. We enjoyed our stay.

The apartment has an excellent location in Alghero and is very spacious. We enjoyed our stay very much. Only thing we has to complain about is the noise from the street early mornings. But what can you excpect when you live in the middle of the town. Owner supplied is with information before we came, and was very friendly. Recommended

We really enjoyed our holiday in Alghero. The apartment is one of the best we have stayed in. It is in a great location, very clean, spacious, well laid out, and had everything we needed - a home from home. There is a bakery just around the corner, supermarket about 5 mins away. We were amazed by the amount of restaurants but we ate in mostly in the great kitchen in the apartment. The fish and veg markets (everyday) are only a few minutes from the apartment. We couldn't resist the lovely fresh food. We got wine in the Sella & Mosca winery. There is a tour of the winery at 17.30 everyday.
A weekly market on Wednesday am, Maria Pia beach can be reached by the local AO bus. We went to Bosa and out to the caves by local bus.
Most of all, we were charmed by Alghero, loved the sights and sounds of the narrow streets.
Antonia provided all the information before we went and thanks for all the extras in the apartment.
We will definitely be back!

May break in Alghero

We had a super week in the old town apartment. It is on the first floor of an old town house. The apartment was clean and well furnished. Nice big bathroom with a large shower cubicle. It comfortably slept 6 (4 adults and 2 children). Everything is within walking distance as you are right in the centre. The beach is 20 minutes walk. The bus stop (no need for a taxi from the airport!) is about 10 minutes walk. Pub and restaurant 50 yards away.Would go again!

family holiday Alhgreo

Date Submitted: March 09, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2008
last year my family stayed in the apartment in Alghero old town. We had a great time, all the amenities were within a walking distance. Bakery just round the corner, plenty of restaurants and bars to visit in the evening, also the shops and markets. The beach is quite a walk but its possible and there are plenty of local buses to take you to other places. We went on a boat trip one day which was great fun. Looking back it was quite an adventure, sorting things out for ourselves, like ordering the calor gas to be delivered in italian from the phone box , and it arrived later that evening. The facilities were good and clean, I would recommend this property to anyone.

Family getaway

Date Submitted: March 05, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2008
Being fellow holiday rentals advertisers we did a swap with the owners of this apartment for our house in Carcassonne (property 94174). We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this apartment- it was clean, well equipped & perfect position to explore the old town of Alghero. We particularly liked the special touches such as the four poster bed & the bathroom sink.
There are loads of restaurants within a few minutes walk & we parked the hire car for free by the harbour. We also enjoyed exploring Sardinia- there is plenty of historical interest & the beaches are lovely.
We've since met Roy & Antonia (the owners) & they are very friendly, straightforward people.

As a family, we have travelled widely and this is one of the best apartments we have stayed in. Well laid out, spacious with excellent facilities for cooking and leisure and lots of original character and personal touches (especially the very large four poster bed!). The owner is extremely helpful and considerate and provided useful information through email contact prior to travel and through an information folder in the apartment. Location of the apartment is perfect; in the heart of the old town with plenty of nice restaurants, bars and cafes and shopping nearby. We were there at New Year and although it was cold outside, the apartment was warm and we didn't require extra heating (though this was provided if required). I have recommended this apartment to friends and would certainly like to return for a summer visit to more fully enjoy some of the little outdoor cafes nearby

This apartment is fantastic - clean, spacious and great value for money. Alghero is a beautiful part of the world, and this apartment is very central, easily within walking distance of everything in the old town.
Excellent facilities are available in the apartment, and included is a pram and rear-facing car seat for parents wanting to travel light. We have just returned from a 5 day break in Sardinia. The apartment was great - very well equipped and in a superb location. Early spring was an excellent time to visit - not too crowded, warm sunny weather and the island looks beautiful with lots of flowers and very green. Alghero has lots of good restaurants and bars and is a good place to just wander around.
