"Lovely cottage, beautiful position, Linda's fabulous bread and fairings. What more can we say, other than we've booked another week in the Autumn."
Owners Response: We are always pleased to receive good reviews from our guests and it's the 'icing on the cake' when they choose to book another week and in the same year! Thank you very much Hilary for your compliments - we look forward to seeing you again when the colours on the Mawgan Creek and in the garden at Rock Cottage will be rich and warm.

Perfect place to propose!!

Date Submitted: January 18, 2012 Date of Stay: January 2012
This was a surprise trip for my girlfriend Kim's 30th birthday. On our arrival we were amazed by both the views and the quality of the cottage (and the lovely cake that was awaiting us!). We went for dinner at the nearby New Yard restaurant, within the Trelowarren estate (highly recommended). On our return I took Kim down to the moon lit jetty and proposed!! After much crying I finally got a yes! It was the perfect setting for a really special day.

We had planned to spend most of our time exploring the area but found it almost impossible to leave the cottage! It has everything you need and more, a real home from home. I even took up a new hobby, birdwatching, taking great pleasure in putting out the bird feed every morning and seeing which birds arrived.

When we did force ourselves to go out we did find that due to the time of year some of the local attractions closed. The nearby seal sanctuary is open all year round though. We got our own guided tour and would definitely recommend it, especially at feeding times.

We would highly recommend Rock Cottage and cannot wait for a return visit, maybe for our honeymoon! Thankyou Linda and family.

Wayne & Kim
Owners Response: Many thanks Wayne for choosing our property for your very special occcasion. We are so pleased you and Kim had a truely memorable stay at Rock Cottage and didn't want to leave. It is also much appreciated to receive a great review which is a good start to 2012. Looking forward to seeing you again.

Rock Cottage

Date Submitted: October 04, 2011 Date of Stay: September 2011
Rock Cottage was truly wonderful – after a long drive from home in Surrey it was a sight for sore eyes opening the gate and seeing the splendour of Mawgan Creek- the view is breath taking.

The cottage was perfect, clean and very well equipped. We in fact ended up bringing a lot more with us than we needed! Breakfast was spent watching the robins, blue tits, pheasant and rabbit out the kitchen window. The living/dining room was so cozy and we spent many an evening with a glass (or two) of wine playing scrabble (one of the many games in the cupboard). It was so relaxing and a really great environment to rest. The bedrooms too were very comfortably furnished and set off with lovely flowers. We would certainly be happy to return but the only thing we thought the cottage was missing was a double bed in the garden room. If we wanted to holiday with friends I think it would be an issue that the other bedrooms had twin beds. Therefore I would recommend this cottage to a couple or a small family.

We brought along our open canoes and although the bank to the jetty is quite steep, it wasn’t any trouble launching them off – we had hoped to paddle most days but one thing to bear in mind, if you intend to do something similar, is that when the tide is low the creek is one big mud flat, so there were a few days where we couldn’t get in the water at all as the tide times (and daylight) dictated. The jetty is a perfect safe storage for boats and also perfect for sitting watching and listening to the birds (the owls were mesmerising).

There’s so much to do within a very short drive – we found the folder of brochures a great help to plan our days. Geevor Tin Mine, Lizard Light House, Kynance Cove to name but a few – Porthleven is also worth a visit – great Fish & Chips at “Roland’s Happy Plaice”. The local pub “The Ship Inn” is great too – we had monkfish which was out of this world. Whatever you do it will be an adventure.

Linda and Robin were great. They were always on hand if you needed anything and were extremely helpful with local knowledge. It is great that they are happy to share this cottage as it is a special place and we were thrilled to be able to spend some time there. I hope we can return again.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, Adventure Seekers, Families with Young Children

Owners Response: Increasingly guests are bringing their own canoes and kayaks to explore the hidden secrets of the upper Helford River and Sarah and Andy also took the opportunity to discover a few of the many other interests in the area when the tide was not suitable.

Many thanks for your comprehensive review. We look forward to a return visit.

Picture perfect and then some...

Scrabbella M. London, United Kingdom.
Date Submitted: August 09, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
In all honesty, I want to keep Rock Cottage completely and utterly to myself and not tell anyone else about it. That said, if my friends, Trev and Di, had been similarly uncharitable, I would never have experienced one of the most relaxing and comfortable holidays of all time—and let's be honest, isn't that exactly what a holiday is meant to be?! Linda and family are selfless in allowing others to share their treasure.

Rock Cottage has everything needed for the perfect stay. As an aspiring and enthusiastic cook, I found the kitchen to be a home from home. No need to pack your best knives, chefs, the Dandys have provided for us well. To boot, we own the same salad spinners! The garden room is a delight; the master bedroom is lovely; the children’s room is crying out for inhabitants; and the sitting room is beautifully appointed with everything needed for a 21st century break from it all.

I’ve just realized that I’ve written two paragraphs without mentioning the ‘V’ word. And what a V. The View from Rock Cottage is like the Holy Grail; you’ve read about it, but never expected to come across it just a few miles off the M whatever. During our stay, Mum and I decided jaunts to surrounding attractions were entirely unnecessary. Except for a couple of trips for fresh produce, we never ventured away from the view. We were lucky; the weather was kind and we spent the week sitting in the sun watching the tide ebb and flow.

The bird life in the garden turned this committed theatre buff into an ardent twitcher. The pair of great spotted woodpeckers was a memorable highlight. I can’t wait to return next year along with my family and nephews. Maybe then I’ll get to take to the creek in true Swallows and Amazons fashion in Peggy. That river crab record has got to go!

I write from my office in central London. Just putting together this review has me back in my chair looking out with a sigh over Mawgan Creek.

Thank you, Linda and family, for being so community spirited! : )

Owners Response: Thank you so much. What a wonderful review which we are so very pleased to receive. It is rewarding for us to know that you both had a great holiday at Rock Cottage. We are grateful for your recommendations and look forward to welcoming you and your family in 2012.

The cottage that rocks

Yorkies Pickering.
Date Submitted: June 20, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
After a week of hustle and bustle in St Ives ( which we loved ), our week in Rock Cottage was what we had hoped - a complete contrast and a haven of peace ( ok the odd car drives past - no matter ).
The views are stunning, the wildlife varied, even two woodpeckers on the birdtable, and a swan's nest up river to keep an eye on. I wonder if they've hatched yet?
The pub up the road " The Ship " was very good, good food, good beer and very dog friendly. We found a lovely woodland walk to it, avoiding the narrow road.
The location was excellent for touring the Lizard. We managed to get a "dog friendly beaches guide" which was very useful. Porthoustock and Porthallow beaches being worth a visit. There is also a small one next to Church Cove, Gunwalloe which even has sand, sandmartins and a glorious view.
It was a pleasure to stay in such a cared for, comfy, well - equipped cottage. Even Sam the dog felt at home, he appreciated the schmackos waitng for him.
We would have rated this cottage excellent but for the lovely garden room having no en-suite facilities.
Thankyou to Robin and Linda for a super week "on the rock".

Owners Response: Many thanks for your great review. As promised, I will let you know when the swans eggs hatch. Fingers crossed that this time they do not float away upstream.

Rock On ! ( Cottage )

Ali Nottingham.
Date Submitted: June 20, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
This was our first visit to Rock Cottage but something tells me it won’t be our last.
The cottage itself is picturesque set in a stunning location, immaculately furnished and very comfortable, the pictures truly do not do it justice. The fresh flowers Linda arranged throughout were lovely as were the treats laid out in the kitchen – what a welcome!
The garden is well established and wraps around the whole cottage which means if the sun is shining you will always find a sunny spot at any time of day. All sorts of wildlife visit including Dave the friendly robin and Mr and Mrs Pheasant looking for breakfast, lunch or an evening meal! The most spectacular thing about this cottage is the view of the creek and walking down to the jetty to find Peggy waiting for you to row off and have some fun (tides permitting of course). Hubby also launched his windsurfer from the jetty and although a bit tamer than the sea he could leave the windsurfer safe and sound every day without having to rig each time. We ate out on the patio each evening, even if it rained, having taken a table top heater and gazebo – we really couldn’t waste those views.
The Ship Inn is only a ten minute walk away, the new owners have only been there 12 weeks but have already established the restaurant with fabulous food – best to book in advance. Be warned the pub is closed Sunday evening and all day Monday.
Local attractions that we enjoyed, The Lizard, Coverack, Helford Village, Gunwalloe beach and Cadgwith Cove, a beautiful fishing village where we bought fish for our supper.
We have had a fantastic holiday and thanks to Linda and Robin for being so friendly and making our stay memorable.

Owners Response: Thank you to Alison and Ian for an excellent review of the cottage and your holiday in the area. We are delighted that you all had a fantastic time. Pretty much perfect

All the other reviews are quite correct - this place really is amazing.

The location of the cottage is the perfect balance of isolation and being near near facilities. You cannot see another house, yet minutes away from the village pub and shop. The big Sainsburys is just minutes away in the car.

The cottage itself is well equipped and comfortable, and obviously well cared for. In particular, the kitchen has everything you need, which isn't always the case in self-catering places. We used the bbq once, which was great.

The really unique feature of this cottage is the garden and view. Situated right on the edge of a creek leading into the Helford river, there are stunning views, and amazing wildlife to keep you mesmerised. There is a small rowing boat which we used most days. As novices, we managed to catch some small crabs on the jetty as well.

It's a great area of Cornwall, with a stack of things to do in the immediate neighbourhood.

We all had a fantastic time, our young son wants to go back already! I'm sure we will book another break soon.

Owners Response: It is really pleasing to know that your first visit to Rock Cottage and this part of Cornwall, was 'amazing'. Thank you so much for a great review and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.

There are so many things to do in the locality, and for all age groups. Many guests have commented that a week or even two are not sufficient, so they come back again.

Stunning Location - Delightful Cottage

Gwen Boston, MA.
Date Submitted: May 03, 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011
Considering all the good reviews I had read online, I was a little afraid I'd be let down when we actually arrived. Well, the minute you open the gate onto the private terrace and see the views of the gardens leading down to the Helford River - no fear of any letdown! And that's even before we went inside to find everything spotless, some yummy treats left for us, and a charming house stocked with everything we could want - from very nice bathrobes upstairs to a good selection of spices in the kitchen. This is a great benefit if you are coming from far away as we were - all we had to buy was our food.

Rock cottage is in a great location. There was more than we had time to do within a half hour drive: Kynance Cove, a tour of the Lizard Lighthouse, Trebah Gardens, a short boat ride from Helford Passage to walk around Helford on the other side of the River, the stunning walk along the cliffs near Loe Bar, etc. Our farthest trip was probably 40 mins to St Michaels Mount.

The dilemma is whether to take advantage of the area or just stay put and feed the pheasants and spot the rabbits. We had an excellent meal at Nansloe Manor (a fantastic, but not inexpensive, place if you need a night somewhere on either side of your rental), Hazelphron and Ships Inn in Mawgan. Really we just wanted to eat dinner by the kitchen window and hear the owls at dusk, so we made good use of the prepared meals 10 mins away at Sainsburys. I had heard good things about Gear Farm shop, but they were closed for a while when we were there.

Considering that Rock Cottage is right on the (very untravelled) road - which is great for taking short walks here & there- it is simply amazing that in the house & yard you feel absolutely private. Its like you have the whole view to yourself - maybe its the quiet that makes it so easy to notice all the birds. Rowing in Peggy on the river down to Tremayne Quay was another good way to see the wildlife and realize how undeveloped and unspoiled the area is.

Normally, we wouldn't be tv watchers while on vacation, but we had to join in with the royal wedding fun, so I can attest the tv reception is great and we had a good view of Kate & Pippa's dresses. Plus we got to hear the church bells from the lovely Mawgan Church. Do not miss going inside the church!

I could keep extolling the virtues of Rock Cottage & the Lizard area, but I'm not sure I should. We'd like to come back again, and I'm afraid it will be all booked! :-)

Owners Response: Thank you Gwen for the splendid review of your holiday. It was a pleasure to meet you both and to hear that your visit to Rock Cottage and the surrounding area, was well worth the long flight across the Atlantic and drive from London. We hope you will be able to return.

We had a wonderful stay at Rock Cottage and would happily have spent all our time at the cottage looking at the remarkable view either from the garden or the kitchen window. The property was well maintained and the garden most attractive. We were very lucky with the weather and visited lots of places of interest. The main car park at St. Ives was a rip-off and the Tate disappointing but Barbara Hepworth's Gallery was a joy. Many of the smaller coastal resorts were a delight and, apart from St. Ives, were not crowded at this time of year.
The only criticism of the cottage was there being only one lavatory plus it was not separate from the bathroom. Not so bad when just two of us are staying but problematic with a larger party. Having said that we are looking forward to returning to Rock Cottage.

The view. For me it was the view. It does not get any better than this. The feeling that it is all yours and you are its custodian.
Many thanks to Linda for allowing us to stay in her lovely cottage. Rarely have we stayed anywhere with such standards of cleanliness and the little welcoming touches were very much appreciated too.
If you want to 'get away from it all' then come to Rock Cottage; it allows you to do just that. Listen to the birds, the trees and the sound of silence.
My only regret was that I can't draw or paint because that view would be the subjects of all subjects.

From the moment we saw Rock Cottage we knew we'd made the right choice. Everything was as stated, the cottage was clean, comfortable and prepared for our stay and the little extras made us feel even more welcome.
The views from the kitchen and garden were awesome, so much so it was difficult to tear ourselves away to do anything else! We watched and listened to the birds from first thing in the morning until long into the evening.
Although tide times meant 'getting up early' it was well worth the effort to have breakfast on 'Peggy' and enjoy the creek.
We were close to all the beaches, (approx 10 miles to The Lizard and 20 to Hayle) and enjoyed visiting a different part of the Cornish coastline everyday. Despite holidaying in March, we were lucky enough to have beautiful weather and not one day without sunshine.
In summary we had the most amazing and unique experience which we would love to repeat.

What a lovely relaxing time we had at Rock Cottage! We needed a break from the city, with as much or as little to do as we wanted, and Rock Cottage certainly provided everything we wished for! The cottage is in an amazing location, with the most stunning views. All the reviews are spot on, the scenery and wildlife are something quite special. The cottage inside is immaculate, very well equipped and comfy (so much so we didn't sample the local restaurants for evening meals) Watching the birds whilst having breakfast was a daily pastime, then once we managed to leave the wildlife behind, the local area has loads to explore, enough for 2 weeks (though we had 5 days) and we didn't need to drive very long to get to an amazing beech or walk. All in all a fab time. Would without a doubt be returning (work allowing!!)

I was stunned by the beautiful scenery before we even reached Rock Cottage - and then seeing the view from the garden which takes in the river and the surrounding woodlands - double wow!! I was totally blown away. I felt my heart expanding just being there, it was just what I wanted.

The cottage itself is well equipped and cosy, a home from home and just right as a base for exploring the glorious surrounding countryside. The owners have provided many thoughtful bits and pieces in the kitchen and living room to aid your stay. The only downside was some noise from the road it was situated on, but it wasn't very busy, so not too disturbing.

I highly recommend a stay at this beautiful place.

Just how a family Holiday should be.

Once the crowds have peeled off left and right for Newquay and St Austell you then enter this 'get away from it all' wonderful part of the world; where the pace of life slows down and the scenery is breathtaking. On reaching Rock Cottage, you realise that you have a whole slice of it as your back garden. The views of the estuary are just magical and although not being a family to usually stop and do very little, we all were just taken in by the ever changing tides and local wildlife. Inside - well no need for any Jif here, the cottage was spotless and the attention to the 'little details' was really welcoming. After a lot of messing about on the water it was great to return to a real cosy cottage. Plenty of things to do in the area too, fantastic beaches within a short distance, a short walk to the local 'Ship' pub; picturesque Helford is only a few miles by car. Although, like us you may find that simply exploring the local estuary in 'Peggy' is just enough for the Swallows and Amazons holiday you hoped.

A rare find and a first rate place to stay, relax and unwind. Thank you Linda and Family for making our stay so enjoyable - missing it already

This was our first visit to Rock Cottage and our wish to get away from it all was realised once we arrived at this delightful location. Even though the details provided give you some idea, it is not until you look out over the estuary that you realise what a beautiful place this is. The cottage was spotless and the owners made us feel very welcome, supplying some local ‘goodies’ which were very welcome. Flowers in all the rooms gives the cottage a very homely feel. Everything is provided and you only need to bring a change of clothes!
The views from the kitchen window particularly are a delight and it must be the best place to have your breakfast whilst watching ever changing scenery as the tide comes in and out, bringing with it a huge selection of birds, plus a pair of swans which seemed to patrol the creek on a daily basis! If the weather is good, eating outside is also a must and you may be lucky enough to share the garden with a visiting woodpecker or nuthatch, as well as the resident pheasants.
Rock Cottage is also well situated for visiting many attractions which are only a short distance. The Lizard Point is well worth a visit as is the little port of Porthleven, both only 20 minutes or so by car.
We had a lovely week and were very sad to leave – we hope to return one day soon!
Thank you Linda and family!

A True Family Holiday

We visited with 2 teenagers and my parents. All 3 generations had a wonderful and entertaining holiday, which says alot these days. We really enjoyed walking around the coast, with Church Cove being a favourite place both for walking and swimming.

The Eden Project was stunning and again offered something for everyone. Other places worth mentioning were Mousehole and St Ives with winding cobbled streets and interesting shops. The teenagers couldn't wait to get out in Peggy and were always keeping an eye out on the tides to ensure they got to use her at the optimum time.

The cottage was everything we had hoped for, offering comfortable accommodation for everyone, and the decorations were excellent. Next time, I'm going to stay in the Garden Room - who wouldn't want to wake up with views down the Mawgan Creek!

My only regret is that I left it 25 years between visits.

Owners Response: Robin and I were really pleased to meet and welcome back Cindy and her family after so many years. We hope to see you all again in the not too distant future.

Unique Cottage Overlooking Helford River, England

Alan from York York.
Date Submitted: May 29, 2010 Date of Stay: May 2010
This was our second visit to Rock Cottage during May 2010, with a 11 year gap between visits. The cottage is in a remote and idyllic location overlooking a creek adjoining the Helford River on The Lizead peninsula in the South West of England.

The cottage comprises of the main cottage with 2 bedrooms and a separate single storey garden room a few meters from the cotagge that has recently been refurnished and redorated to a very high standard.

For those wanting a holiday or a short break with a wow factor this is the place to come. When you enter through the cottage gate the view above is awesome and takes your breath away; it is pure unspoilt nature at its very best and all yours for your stay.

The cottage itself is beautifully and simply furnished in keeping with the period and type of cottage. All facilities you would expect in a modern family home are available but perhaps on a smaller scale. The view from the kitchen dining table is the same as the view above but with the added advantage of a wide array of wildlife that visit the garden each day from woodpeckers to pheasant.

The garden and grounds are on a slope that leads down to the mooring to which the cottage provides a rowing boat for all to explore once the tide is in. From the boat and river you obtain differing and magnificent views to which I recommend you enjoy as well as the opportinity to caste the odd line.

The attention to detail on arrival is to be commended with a small welcome pack and array of flowers in most rooms plus a level of cleanliness and attention to detail that is both noteworthy and a credit to the owner.

Nearby in the village there is a pub, The Ship, and although we ate there one night it would not be my first choice to dine; there are many better places to eat out especailly around St ives and Falmouth. The village also has a small shop for the essentials but there are major supermarkets near to Helston which offer more choice and value.

I would recommend that you explore the coastline and coves of the Lizead, especially Kynance Cove, as it is worth the walk from the car park and there is also an attractive cafe overlooking the cove that serves good value and tasty food.

In sum, a unique and most enjoyable experience in which I whole heartedly would recommend for the view alone; stunning.

Owners Response: Firstly, our thanks to Alan for taking the time to write his review which is very much appreciated.

Secondly, we do hope that you and your family will return, in the not too distant future, to Rock Cottage and once again enjoy a wonderful time here on the Lizard Peninsula.

What an amazing place! Just as beautiful as described and more…

The house was clean and welcoming – helped by the goodies left for us by Linda and Robin. The garden room was fresh and comfortable and had views that would be impossible to describe without doing them an injustice.
The position of the cottage was perfect for anyone wanting a peaceful getaway and I could imagine that some visitors would find it hard to drag themselves away. If we didn’t have children to entertain, I am sure we would have been tempted to venture no further than the local shop for provisions, open up a book (Frenchman’s Creek would be a good one!) and soak up the sounds and ever changing views revealed along the creek as the tides ebb and flow. You are never alone for long however, as you share the cottage with an abundance of wildlife; from the magnificent Pheasants promenading around the gardens to the cautious little Nut Hatch stealing seeds from the bird table - blink and you will miss him!

The local pub was very friendly and obviously a hub for the locals who welcomed us warmly as well as our dog. The food was excellent but a word of warning; the portions are huge and the curry is HOT! Oh - and don’t forget to take a torch! The benefit of no light pollution means a difficult walk back without one, even if you are only drinking lemonade!
Thank you Linda & Robin for making this beautiful cottage available for all to enjoy!

Outstanding accommodation in beautiful location

Rock Cottage is an outstanding property. It stands on a promontary at the head of a beautiful tidal creek, ensuring a private and relaxing holiday. Yet, it is within easy reach of the small harbour towns and coves of the the Lizard. The property is exceptionally clean and well maintained by the owners who are very welcoming. Every convenience is thoughtfully provided. The garden and waterfront area are both enchanting. Visits to Mullion, the Minack Theatre, Church Cove, Cadgwith, St Ives and the Lizard are a must. I cannot recommend a holiday at Rock Cottage highly enough.

Well appointed & cared for

Date Submitted: March 05, 2010 Date of Stay: February 2010
Rock cottage provided us with excellent holiday accomodation. The location is inspiring - perched above an inlet off the Helston River. It's sufficiently secluded to give room to breath and yet near(10 mins walk) to the essentials of life such as pub, shop, church and organic 'takeaway'!

Rock cottage gives you two perfectly difficult choices - to stay at home and watch the tide coming and going whilst the wildlife does wildlife type things around you, or to go out and enjoy this stunning bit of Cornwall. In truth the only viable solution is probably to book two weeks and dedicate one week to each activity.

The owners have their way of doing things but are helpful whilst not intrusive. Their love for their cottage, which has been in the family since the 1950's, sets the accomodation apart; it feels cared for, tended and becomes a home from home very quickly.

Our visit in February brought us great weather but empty roads. I'm not going to mention that tho' because we'd like to go back next year and don't want anyone to book it ahead of us..... But when you do go, I hope you have as happy a holiday as we did.
Owners Response: We thank this family very much for taking the time to write about their holiday at Rock Cottage during the February Half Term. They were excellent guests who truely appreciated what the area has to offer, and they will always be most welcome at Rock Cottage.

We have been to Rock Cottage a couple of times and it is always a pleasure. It is spotlessly clean and usefull items such as towels and gowns are provided cutting down what to pack conciderably. There is a lot to see and explore in the local area, we went horse riding, Praa sands for boogie boarding and also it is an easy drive to the Minack Theatre, Mouse hole and St Ives. I would recomend this cottage whole heartidly.

Rock Cottage - True Escapism & Tranquility

Anneka T London, UK.
Date Submitted: June 30, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Fabulous find! I have been to Cornwall every year since birth and always stayed at St Ives.
Recently I fell up the Helford Estuary, a much underated part of Cornwall. Very different to the beach areas. Very green, lush, stunning views, quiet winding country lanes, tropical gardens, steams and wildlife. WOW! Just as if not more beautiful than the tourist parts. I decided this year that I wanted to stay in a creek cottage and came across Rock Cottage.
The views at Rock Cottage were just what I was looking for. You are teetering on the end corner of a small side creek off the Helford Estuary. The garden is flat at the top so plenty of flat areas...it then steeply slopes down to the jetty where the boat is moored. There is a lovely secret bench in the garden which captures the morning sun perfectly.
When I arrived, I just stood there in a trance, as there was no noise, no fligt path, nothing!! Coming from London it was a weird sensation not to hear noise as you can always hear something in London.
The cottage was simply exquisite, old and quaint - just what I want when I am in Cornwall. Who wants a modern flat when you can live like they did hundreds of years back!
Linda exceeded herself as her cleanliness is out of this world. Also, there was every appliance needed. We had a dishwasher, barbecue equipment for the barbie and even sugar, salt, kitchen rolls, everything! all the plates, cups, tee towels, linen, bath towels were all clean and waiting. So were bath robes. The master bedroom smelt wonderful - very clean. I stared for ages out of the window at the views!!!
One small draw back - the garden is a little on the shady side, but really not a major issue for us. Also, I had to save up for this week, as it cost a little more than my usual Cornish holidays. Please be aware that there is only one bathroom downstairs, so you have to run down at night to the loo! lol
However, my 2 year old didn't even venture down the hill, so no worries there. The boat was great and all the instructions clearly left for us.
I honestly hand on heart will return to this cottage.
Some other people mentioned noise from the road. If you call one car every 15 min as noise then they must be living in a field somewhere. There was no noise problems.
This holiday was very special for me. Thankyou Linda for making such a week special and PLEASE contact me if you ever decide to sell, as I will buy Rock Cottage off you at a drop of a hat!
Anneka x

Rock Cottage is 'idyllic' if you are looking for a comfy, well appointed cottage retreat giving peace and quiet, a fabulous view to wake up to, abundant wildlife in the garden (quite steep in parts) that runs down to the beautiful creekside. An enchanting corner of the world.

The owners are lovely and provide those extra, 'homely touches' that show that they care.

The cottage is situated within a 10 minute (slow) walk up to the delightful country pub (The Ship) with warm welcome and good pub food and the Spar, that provides fresh bread and the basic needs. You will discover that the walk back takes only 7 minutes! Traffic on the little country lane is minimal and does not detract from the overall appeal.

The property is very conveniently situated if you are planning to explore the many attractions of the Lizard

The Cottage has already been recommended to our Family and Friends and we are looking forward to returning to this beautiful spot.

Rock Cottage really is the best place for enjoying the river and exploring this lovely area of Cornwall. The photos don't convey just how peaceful and idyllic it is there.

We kayaked daily which was so easy with the jetty and the kids spent hours crabbing. We loved watching the wildlife, including the dusk exodus of the bats!
Oh yes - some days we even left the cottage and visited some of the fabulous nearby beaches, villages, pubs, and attractions!

Linda made us feel so welcome and special - thank you again.

We are looking forward to our next visit.

A very cosy cottage beamed cottage uniquely placed on a rock foundation overlooking a magical tidal creek with ever-changing vistas. Rock cottage rocks!

With my partner's 30th birthday approaching the pressure was mounting to find that special place to celebrate and relax. I stumbled acoss Rock cottage, after searching the internet for a few days. The pictures looked fantastic and the location ideal and therefore decided to book the cottage for four nights (this was done without Richard viewing any of it). It is now with a degree of smugness that I am now writing this review!
From the moment we arrived, it was clear that I had made a brilliant choice. Having been given the keys from Linda (after following her spot on directions) we easily found the cottage and eagerly passed through the gate. The view of the river and it's surroundings are the first things that grab you and are absolutely outstanding. After gawping for a while, we then entered the house not only to find it in a spic and span condition but also that Linda had provided a cornish cream tea and a box of chocolates as a gift for Richard's birthday!
The cottage is welcoming with all the home comforts you could ask for..a fully equiped kitchen, fire in the lounge, comfy beds as well as several books on the shelves that inform you of local walks and activities - that is if you can drag yourself away from the house!
Although we did get out and do plenty, we equally enjoyed the time in and around the house - whether spotting the many different birds in the garden, noting the ever changing river or fishing off the jetty (although Richard had no luck catching anything!).
In the evening we were able to walk to the local pub/inn where we had a sound dinner and a few drinks before walking back "home".
The location on a whole was convenient for most day trips to the surrounding areas (padstow, falmouth, lizzard pennisular) although there are fantastic walks, views, shops right on the cottage's doorstep.
Before our first night was over we knew that we would return and since we have been home we have been pouring over our pictures and already discussing a revisit. ..that is if it's not all booked up after people like me posting such reviews!
Once again many thanks to Linda and hope to see you and the cottage again (soon!).

Owners Response: This couple truly appreciate what Rock Cottage and its surroundings have to offer. It is also very pleasing to know that these guests wish to return soon and we thank them for taking the time to write this great review. See you again.

If you want to stay in a cottage which has everything you could need in the most stunning location I have ever had the pleasure to witness then Rock Cottage it must be. Situated in a lovely village within driving distance to all the attractions in Cornwall it couldn't be better located. There is a lovely local pub who welcomed us with open arms, local farm shops who go out of their way to make sure you can get the local catch of the day and a little local store who stock all you need. In fact it seems that everyone (including Linda the owner and the locals) just want to ensure you have a great time. We loved our time at Rock Cottage and have every intention to stay again it was just heavenly.

We saw this on the internet and thought it seemed great, and looked it up in google earth, so knew it was in a really quiet position. It is on a creek of the river, and from the kitchen you look directly over the garden into the river valley and surrounding hills with nothing but the constantly changing water, sky and trees. We had a lovely Christmas, it was overcast most of the time, but even then, the view was lovely. You do not have to go outside to see the 28 varieties of birds that we saw there. It has all the facilities described ..... in excellent order. Linda was really helpful and there was a lovely box of welcoming goodies for us.A short walk to the village which has everything you need .. if you don't want to hit the towns. Yet near enough to a supermarket (if that's your preference). Lots of wonderful walks. It will remain in our minds as the most lovely Christmas and we certainly intend to return....

We were looking for a peaceful holiday in a comfortable high quality cottage which afforded pleasant views, enclosed gardens and a high degree of seclusion in a locality which offered excellent walking, good dining and interesting places to visit.

Rock Cottage delivered on our requirements in spades.

The owners do a fantastic and professional job in the upkeep and the promotion of Rock Cottage. The cottage is well equipped and in excellent order. Although the garden is a little steep the views from the property are stunning. A lane runs by the side of the cottage but this is not too busy. The cottage is positioned in a beautiful and tranquil setting and stands in splendid isolation, with no near neighbours; something we fully appreciated.

We enjoyed walking out from the cottage with the shop at Gear Farm and the pub and general store in Mawgan being close at hand. Within a drive of ten to twenty minutes there are at least six good quality eating places and the area is an ideal location for visiting the south west of Cornwall.

With the weather on our side, a fantastic location and the excellent accommodation at Rock Cottage we had a truly five star holiday experience.

Rock Cottage (12-19 July 2008)

Pete T Winchester.
Date Submitted: July 22, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
We are a family with young children and wanted a water-side holiday home along the Helford River where I could moor my 5m aluminium-hull motorboat. We were very lucky to secure Rock Cottage after a cancellation and Linda gave me good sound information about the location, views and appointment of the cottage to supplement the information on the website. This information turned out to be spot-on. The journey through the small hamlet of Mawgan is quite precarious with narrow and sometimes steep Cornish lanes to navigate. Rock Cottage is on its own about 1km outside of Mawgan and there is ample off-road parking space for 2 cars next to the cottage. This lane way does get quite busy, throwing out some noise at night time. We arrived and were gob-smacked by the stunning, elevated views the cottage has down Mawgan Creek. You will be hypnotised with the views whether the tide is in or out. The boat mooring provided by Rock Cottage was ample for securing the boat and the dinghy sufficiently stable for transferring kids and equipment to the boat. Allow only 2 hours either side of high tide to get back up Mawgan Creek if you fish the Helford River estuary or go further out to sea. If you have a small motorboat, it is worth taking it as this is the best way to see the Helford area and to be able to have those family days out at various gardens and secluded spots along the 7 km river. The cottage itself has all the charm of a charactered cottage but with all the mod cons and a good selection of vhs videos and music cds for grown-ups and kids alike. We were happily surprised to see the kid's twin room in the cottage full of reading material for all age groups. The main cottage has 2 bedrooms upstairs with a double bed and a twin. The only toilet, however, is downstairs so don't drink too much at night! There is a second, detached building to the cottage with a twin-room. All rooms were spotless and have the unique creek views. There are a million things to do within a radius of 10 miles (beautiful little Cornish coastal villages, beaches, Lizard lighthouse etc). We can especially recommend (for young and old alike) the National Trust's Glendurgan Gardens, near Port Navas. Closer to the cottage, there is the Ship Inn pub that serves a la carte dining with a smile and the good news is that it is within easy walking distance. We would definately recommend the cottage to all, especially if you have a small boat - 5 star. Peter

Recommended for: Romantic Getaway, Sightseeing, Adventure Seekers, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children

Owners Response: This young family thoroughly enjoyed their time at Rock Cottage, and we were pleased that the mooring provided an opportunity for them to explore the wider potential of the Helford River including Frenchman’s Creek, as well as to do some fishing.

We will provide a personal ‘mud mooring’ for guests who bring a boat, located close to the cottage and easily accessible using our rowing dinghy as a tender.

Launching a large boat is not possible at Rock Cottage. However, a facility is available nearby in Gweek. Peter and his family unfortunately had to contend with Neap tides which are a bit restrictive. During Spring tides there is ample water for up to three hours either side of high water.

TRUELY PARADISE

Tracey & Sean Brixham, Devon, England.
Date Submitted: July 11, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
"Our first holiday at Rock Cottage; Mum and Dads second time this year, so far! Three holidays at Rock Cottage in total. Our holiday had finally arrived, all the dreaming and memories of that perfect place and location.
Linda and Robin greeted us to give us the keys, and made us feel welcome instantly.
When we walked through the gate we were just stunned by the amazing view of the silent meandering creek, it was unbelievable. It was raining when we arrived but even that did not dismay us. On entering the kitchen, Linda had provided us with lots of goodies: strawberries, scones, clotted cream, fruit juice, and cider all bought from the local Spar shop in Mawgan. We soon forgot it was raining as we tucked in.
We never ventured far from Rock Cottage - it was so hard to tear us away from such a beautiful place. We basked on the sun loungers, fished off the jetty, rowed down the creek in Peggy and enjoyed having barbeques. Who could ask for more! We never wanted for anything as Linda had provided everything even washing powder and pegs.
Our last holiday was in March and Rock Cottage looked beautiful with daffodils and bluebells out, but this time in June, it was a typical cottage garden with cosmos, sweet williams, cornflowers, roses and even the garden mint.
We had breakfast each morning outside the Garden Room regularly joined by our sweet little squirrel and robin. Then we would go down to the jetty and feed the swans as they sailed majestically up to us. This really is a place in paradise.
We have taken brochures and many photos to show our work colleagues, and hopefully they can visit this truly magical place. Rock Cottage is even on our laptop as a screensaver. The most beautiful pictures we have taken are from down the creek in Peggy looking back up at Rock Cottage standing proud and remote in all its beautiful grounds.
We will truly miss this beautiful place, and walking into the village to collect our farm eggs and home made marmalade (which is delicious). and paying into the honesty box. We have had a fantastic holiday, completely relaxed and chilled out.
Now we must go back to our memories and dream of this wonderful place and hope the next time wont be too long away. Thank you Linda and Robin for sharing your much loved and cared for holiday home with us. Tracey, Sean, Marina and Geoff"

A perfect holiday

Sampo & Sanna Helsinki, Finland.
Date Submitted: July 10, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
We spent a lot of time trying to find the best possible cottage for us in Cornwall, and we were lucky to choose Rock Cottage. I shall not try to compete with the photographs in describing the view; the place is very beautiful. We found everything in excellent condition for a perfect holiday.

For our family of five Rock Cottage was ideal, as it is actually two buildings right next to each other. The Garden Room was given to our older children as they like to stay up late and feel a bit independent. The room has very large windows towards Mawgan Creek and is really beautiful - there seems to be no pictures of that on these pages, so that is a nice surprise. The best view from the main building is from the kitchen and the garden is really beautiful, high above the creek.

We had planned to drive around quite a bit, but never got further than Falmouth and St Ives. That is because there is a lot to see along the coast and around the cottage. The location of Rock Cottage is very good as Helston with bigger shops is near, and there are several really nice beaches within a very short distance. Kynance cove is magnificient. We had no idea such places exist, it is a well kept secret. There are no crowds, the water is maybe a bit cool compared to the Mediterranean, but it is a great experience.

I shall recommend Rock Cottage to my friends, as I think Cornwall is really worth visiting, and with Linda and Robin taking care of the place there is no risk one could be disappointed in any way. There is one thing I have to complain about a bit, though: time at Rock Cottage seems to go slowly, in a relaxed atmosphere, but actually it is running faster than elsewhere in Europe, and before you notice it the week has gone. I wish we could have stayed longer.

For any other foreign visitor I would like to say that driving on the left is possible and even fun, and the route from Heathrow has great attractions such as Stonehenge along it. Rock Cottage is easy to find and well worth even a long journey.

Owners Response: Sampo, Sanna and children travelled for 17 hours to get to Rock Cottage and clearly they thought it was worth the effort. We are most grateful for their review. It is a great compliment that our cottage and Cornwall appeal to continental visitors who are always most welcome and have been amongst our best guests.

Our visit in May 2008 is the second to Rock Cottage. It is in immaculate condition with very good equipment.

The location looking towards the Helford River is very peaceful, and one can quickly get to main roads to visit the many gardens and National Trust properties in the area. There are some delightful woodland and coastal walks. An excellent pub with restaurant, farm shop/bakery and the local village shop are all within less than half a mile.

There is the temptation to sit in the garden (or even in the kitchen) and enjoy the scenery, but there are so many other things to do in this part of Cornwall.

Idyllic Creekside cottage

The view of the creek when you first encounter Rock Cottage is simply breathtaking and the grounds and house a delight to explore.
We have visited Rock Cottage twice in different seasons and it was equally lovely on both occasions. There is an abundance of wildlife in the surrounding woodlands and upon the creek itself and you never tire of the stillness and tranquility.
All the home comforts are provided for with welcoming touches such as a cake & fresh flowers upon arrival - the cottage is equipped with everything you could possibly need and Linda & Robin are perfect hosts.
The addition of 'Peggy' is a wonderful addition and once you venture out on the creek, it assumes an even more magical quality.

A wonderful cottage in a truly lovely location which visitors return to again and again.

Owners Response: We are delighted to receive Sally's review of Rock Cottage, and thank her for doing this.

The exclusive view is something that appeals to all our guests. Many hours are spent, from either the garden or kitchen, just watching the Mawgan Creek as it ebbs and flows. The rowing dinghy is very popular and provides an ideal experience to observe the wildlife on the creeks.

We (2 adults + 2 children 10/12) spent a wonderful week at Rock Cottage in May 2008. Everything was in perfect condition. We have never seen such a beautiful and well equipped cottage before. This cottage has everything you need. In the morning we were sitting at the table in the kitchen watching the birds, pheasans, and squirrels taking their breakfast. The kids liked the boat very much and enjoyed it to explore the Helford River. Maybe a little motor
for "Peggy" is the only thing we missed a little bit.
The garden is wonderful! The view is so nice.
There is a lot to see around: beautiful beaches at Lizard peninsula, seal sanctuary, Falmouth and its beautiful Maritime Museum, little walks around the Helford and a lot more.
Perfect place to relax in nature.
Thank´s again to Linda and Robin Dandy for everything.
We hope to come back in the future.

Claudia, Patrick, Marc and Gina

We were so pleased that Claudia, Patrick and the children, who had a very long and tiring journey from Filderstadt in Germany, were not disappointed with Rock Cottage and all it has to offer. They were superb Guests and we look forward to welcoming them back.

Perfect relaxation

Liz & David Stratford-on-Avon.
Date Submitted: June 02, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2007
We first saw Rock Cottage many years ago when exploring the roads & creeks around Helford River so when we first saw the advertisement in a national paper we booked immediately. That was in 1993 and we have been visiting ever since.

The combination of peace, the wonderful birdlife and that stunning view, which never fails to take our breath away on opening the gate, guarantees a relaxing stay whatever the weather. On arrival, we just have to sit in the garden for an hour or so soaking up the view before we do anything else.

The cottage is kept beautifully clean and it is always nice to feel the continuity of it being owned by the same family for over 50 years

There are so many local attractions that we rarely go far from the Lizard peninsula during our stay. Despite many years of visiting Meneage, we are still finding new places to go but the favourites are the gardens. Just over the river, Trebah in particular and Glendurgan are always wonderful even in summer rain! The coves such as Cadgwith, Kynance and Church Cove are all delightful as is the broader bay at Coverack.

Peggy the rowing boat is the icing on the cake for exploring the creeks without disturbing the peace & quiet. It is also effective at burning off the energy taken on board from the irresistible local cream teas !!

We have never found a more exquisite location in all our travels here & abroad so Rock Cottage is the yardstick by which others are measured.

Liz & David

Best Christmas Yet!

Gag Birmingham.
Date Submitted: May 21, 2008 Date of Stay: December 2007
After years of doing Christmas at home with all its delights; overcooked sprouts, undercooked turkey, family punch ups, lop sided trees, and annadin extra! We decided to try something a bit different and we booked Rock Cottage for a week over the holiday period. My husband and I were joined by our daughter (21), our son and his girlfriend both are in their mid twenties. We did our last minute shopping on Christmas Eve in Taunton M&S. We spent an evening or two getting tipsy at the local pub (The ship.. I think) and giggling down the lanes on the way back. We ate Christmas lunch at the pub too; it was a real treat and not a soggy brussel sprout in sight! We wrapped up and went for long walks on various beaches including Church Cove which was a so invigorating. We lingered over breakfast each day just enchanted by the view from the window. When the kids got withdrawal symptoms and left us to head back to party in the big cities ( London and Birmingham), a couple of friends joined us and we did the same things all over again. The cottage is so lovely, and immaculate. Linda is brilliant and caring she took so much trouble to make sure we were comfortable. If there is a vacancy book it! You wont regret it!

Owners Response: Christmas comes but once a year - however, we hope that these excellent Guests will return to Rock Cottage in the future, and once again enjoy some of the many wonderful places that the Lizard peninsula offers.

During the festive season, it is worth visiting Mousehole where a fabulous display of Christmas lights adorn the fishing harbour and hillside. The City of Truro and Helston also have a fine display and many of the small villages make the effort too.

Even during December, the weather can be fine and taking an after lunch stroll on a pretty deserted beach, is quite exhilarating! For either a leisurely lunch or dinner, there are a number of fine restaurants to choose from, and all within a short drive or walking distance of Rock Cottage. However, whatever you decide to do, the cottage is a warm and welcoming retreat at the end of the day.

A Little 'Peace' of Heaven

Jo & David Exeter, Devon.
Date Submitted: May 18, 2008 Date of Stay: February 2008
We chanced upon Rock Cottage well over two years ago, whilst browsing the Internet, and immediately tried to book it - alas, fully booked for the year! We didn't give up, thought it worth saving the link to our 'favourites'. Tried again 6 months later, again no joy! However, third time lucky"! We were able to book the cottage this year. We arrived when the daffodils were in bloom, the garden looked just lovely ...what's more we had reasonable weather too! As we drove up we just knew we would love our stay, and walking through that little green gate (so perfectly painted, as was the whole of the cottage), seeing the view, we knew we had struck lucky! Every comfort has been thought about - even down to the bird food. We are seasoned cottagers, and we really have stayed in some lovely places but Rock Cottage tops the lot. We loved it so much we immediately booked for next year. This is the first time in our holiday history that we have ever gone back to the same location twice! Can't wait until next May!!

PS: David says : 'this is the best place I ever stayed in Cornwall'. Coming from a Cornish man in exile - true praise indeed!

David & Jo, Exeter

Owners Response: We were so pleased that these Guests were absolutely delighted with Rock Cottage - it was obviously worth waiting for!

As mentioned, the garden looked lovely. After the daffodils had faded came the carpet of primroses and bluebells as well as the wild purple orchids. In Autumn the trees are ablaze with golden leaves and the hue on the river paints another picture.

An idyllic place

Date Submitted: May 16, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2007
We stayed at Rock Cottage for the first time in Sept ‘07, and immediately booked again for the following year. It's a unique place, a piece of paradise with gardens leading down to a beautiful and ever-changing creek on two sides. The views when you first walk through the gate and out into the garden are breathtaking. There are no neighbours and you soon sink into the peace and seclusion of the place - the only times we left the cottage and gardens all week were to stock up on food from the fantastic local farm shop! You could sit outside the cottage all day looking at the view of the creek with its wooded banks and birdlife, or doze on the lawn in the sun. There is plenty of woodland and several interesting little foreshores to explore. The jetty and rowing boat were an absolute treat. You can row along the creek in several different directions, and it's so enjoyable. The cottage is lovely, with everything you could need, and it's clean and well looked after. You can tell it's owned by people who really care about it. The most important thing for us is that we wouldn't go away without our two dogs, so we really appreciate the owners for allowing them to have a wonderful holiday at Rock Cottage too!

Owners Response: We are delighted to receive this review from such appreciative Guests, and are certain that when they return this year, they will find the Cottage even more welcoming than before!

Indeed, many of our Guests return several times. They have told us that Rock Cottage is very special, makes them feel immediately at home, and the unspoilt view with its ever-changing tidal scenery, is always a joy to behold whatever the time of year.

Heaven whatever the weather

Kernow Fan Club London.
Date Submitted: May 14, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2007
Have stayed at Rock Cottage three times over the past 10 years and all the family simply love it whatever the weather.

Location perfect being in the middle of nowhere but with major facilities (big supermarket, doctor etc) only 10 minutes away.

Everyone enjoys messing about in the boat, crab fishing with lumps of cheap bacon (75 in two hours our record so far) and visiting our favourite spots such as Roskillys and Glendurgan.

What do we love about Rock Cottage?

The peace, the trees, the river, the wildlife, the recliners, the barbeque, the location, the peace, the history, the beaches, the crab fishing, the peace, oh and just about everything - even when it rains.

Stay there and you'll be queing up to go back.

Owners Response: Yet another excellent review from Guests who clearly appreciate everything that Rock Cottage and its beautiful surroundings have to offer. As mentioned, it is situated in a superb location, and having such fantastic scenery, it's large garden is just the perfect place for a barbeque, to paint, sketch, photograph, read or just simply nod off to sleep under the shade of the trees.

The Lizard Peninsula is on the doorstep. It offers many interesting walks, fishing coves, arts and crafts and gardens such as Trevano, Trebah including Glendurgan. When it comes to beaches - we are spoilt for choice: Kynance Cove is a hit every time, with Gunwalloe, Church Cove and Poldhu all within 15 minutes drive.

Many of our Guests have told us that they haven't been far as they simply could not tear themselves away from the peace and beauty of the Mawgan Creek.

Rock Cottage

Date Submitted: April 13, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
A unique holiday cottage. Spotlessly clean, beautifully situated and clearly a labour of love by the owners, who make the cottage even more welcoming by the little touches they add - teacups and cake waiting on your arrival, and fresh flowers in every room. At last the internet is good for something!
