Beautiful Collioure - highly recommended

Date Submitted: October 25, 2011 Date of Stay: September 2011
We stayed here for the last 2 weeks in September with another couple. The owner, Mark, sent us a key and easy to follow directions. The house was just as described, in a quiet complex on a hill about 15 minutes walk from Collioure centre, with great views of the sea and equipped with all we needed. It is part of a terrace of houses and appartments with a shared pool - which we had to ourselves. The 2 visitor parking places were occupied but we had no problem parking on the road at the top of the steps down to the house. You can relax on the balconies and watch the old fishing boats, wind surfers, or local commandos practicing - will take binoculars next time! The weather was hot and dry except for one stormy day and we walked into Collioure or Port Vendres (about 25 mins to the harbour) every day. Collioure is breathtakingly beautiful by day and night - famed for anchovies and as an artists' haven. It has pebbly beaches, clear warm sea full of fish, shops, galleries, a fortress, bars, restaurants and the clocktower. Eating out in Collioure wasn't as expensive as we expected. There is a huge choice - we enjoyed amazing fish platters in Coco Liberis, tapas in Le Clocher and moules frites and crepes in St Elme but our favourite was Le Templiers hotel bar and restaurant where the walls are covered in paintings and we shared huge portions of whitebait and calamares at lunchtime and had a really good 3 course evening meal for 18 euros. Loads to see and do in the area - galleries, local wines (visit Cellier de Templiers in Banyuls - tour + wine tasting 10 euros), markets twice a week (try 6 oysters and a glass of wine 5 euros), cliff walks, St Elme fortress above the house (amazing views and tours on the hour), hilltop Cathar castles about an hour away by car. There is a small sandy cove near to the house (10 mins stroll) with a car park above it and there are bigger sandy beaches about 20 minutes by car in either direction. No need for a car - walk or take the little train which also goes to Banyuls, Port Vendres and Argeles or the 1 euro bus - or try a boat trip. Lidl is 15 mins by foot towards Port Vendres, where there are good restaurants next to the harbour. We prepared some simple meals at home with really fresh ingredients - spaghetti with clams, chicken tagine, fish and tapas. The whole experience was brilliant - and we returned fitter and relaxed. Thank you Mark. We hope to visit your lovely house again and have recommended it to friends and family.

A relaxing stay in Collioure

Iain C. .
Date Submitted: September 22, 2011 Date of Stay: September 2011
My wife and I rented for a week from 10th Sept 2011 and had a delightful stay. We spent a day in Collioure a few years ago when holidaying near Perpignan and enjoyed it so much we planned to return when we could.

The apartment was as described with great views of the sea from both floors. We were very comfortable and everything we needed was available – even an iron, which wasn’t mentioned in the brochure. The local agent very kindly popped in to see us the afternoon of our arrival just to make sure that all was OK. I can’t comment on the cooking facilities as we mainly eat out and only had light cold snacks at the house.

We didn’t have any difficulty parking near the house but the two unallocated bays were a little tight. We managed to park at the top of the entrance steps throughout our stay but expect it might be a little more difficult at the height of the season. Parking in Collioure itself was another matter and we generally walked in and out of the town – a bit steep on the way back but no great distance.

Collioure itself is a lovely town and there a plenty of interesting places to wander around. Because it is so far south, we were told by locals that it had quite a long season and there were plenty of restaurants and the like open off-season.

We were impressed with the standard of the restaurants and bistros in both Collioure and Port-Vendres. Everything we had, from a sandwich to a full three-course meal, was terrific, particularly the fish. And the prices were very reasonable – comparing very favourably with the Limousin area of France where we live. It doesn’t seem fair to single out any one restaurant but we were very impressed with the restaurant Restaurant Côte Mer Côte Gers in Port-Vendres where I had an absolutely enormous dorade for 16€.

Fishing – there are plenty of very large grey mullet in these waters and, if you’re a fisherman and want a really frustrating experience, you could spend an evening or two trying to catch them on light freshwater tackle off the rocks or in one of the harbours– well worth the challenge.

All-in-all, we can thoroughly recommend this holiday venue and hope to return soon.

Ideal holiday retreat

The property is in an excellent location with superb sea views from both balconies. As it is situated about half-way between Collioure and Port Vendres (approx. 10-15 minutes walk to each) - it is surprisingly quiet. It is a real home-from-home and was immaculately clean and well presented. The swimming pool (also clean and well-maintained) was never particularly busy during our stay, and guests and locals alike were extremely friendly and helpful. There are also several small beaches within a few minutes walk and the sea is clear and warm! Collioure is easily accessible from Perpignan without a car and I would recommend making the most of the local tourist buses which cost just one euro for any journey during high season. Both Collioure and Port Vendres have a superb range of restaurants and the food and wine were extremely good.

I definitely recommend Collioure for a holiday. The property is in really good position. Town can get quite busy but the house is away from the bustle but near enough to walk in 10-15 minutes. We stayed in the house as a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children, great size, plenty of room. Loved the top balcony in the evenings with the fantastic sea view and full sunshine. For families, the beach was really safe and clean. We drove to the holiday but didn't use the car much, I believe you could holiday here without a car, as the town, beach and restaurants are in easy distance. Although there are only 2 parking spaces, we never had a problem parking. I would definitely recommend this property.

Excellent apartment , clean and well equipped. Enjoyed the balconies and the view. Parking is limited and a little awkward but we were lucky and always found one of the 2 places available. Nice walk to Collioure but slightly hard work getting back. Collioure is just wonderful, beautiful to look at and full of charm, good food and drink and nice small shops.
Port Vendres also very much worth a visit and would recommend the Restaurant Chez Pujol in the centre on the quay. The little tourist train is well worth trying. All in all highly recommended.

Collioure Appartment

Larks Bristol.
Date Submitted: October 19, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
We usually stay in hotels so this was our first experience of an appartment for many years.Collioure itself is quite delightful and it's easy to understand why people are drawn back to it- we also understand why so many refer to the poor parking in the town itself so be prepared to walk.It is a bit hilly but that was no problem for us -it also gave us an appetite! The appartment was very well equipped/clean and had everything we could have wanted-it was also in a quiet location being one street back from the main coast road. The pool area is clean but functional and, like us,most of the people staying used the beach. We found the pool recliners supplied a bit flimsy and uncomfortable but that might just be us.We would recommend this appartment and would seriously consider going back.

Recommended for: Tourists without a Car, Age 55+, Sightseeing

Owners Response: Thank you for your kind comments. I note the comments about the seats for the side of the pool. This is a dilemma for us. They are light and so easy to carry to the pool. More substantial ones may prove too cumbersome

Lovely Apartment, Beautiful Views

We had the perfect week here in August, I can't recommend this apartment and the stunning Collioure highly enough! The view from both balconies is just stunning. The pool was generally quiet and even when busy was never crowded. The walk back up is a bit steep but there is a taxi service in town that will bring you back up for about 6 euros if you have shopping/whiney tired children. The apartment was everything we had hoped for and we will almost certainly be back again... soon I hope.

In short, thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Apartment was clean, comfortable & well furnished (lovely decor which my wife loved!). Views are to die for & relaxing on the main bedroom balcony is a dream. Like a couple of other reviews, initially found the shower a little difficult (typical continental in that the shower head is situated on the wall half way along the bath at c chest height) but quickly adapted to showering by sitting down in the bath - actually pretty relaxing! Must say, never before used a microwave/oven combination, but it's excellent! Pool is a 20 second walk along a path. Lovely setting - only improvement I would make is to furnish it with sunbeds. Walk into town is c 15 mins, extremely enjoyable. Collioure itself - wonderful town, loads of nice shops, lots of places to eat. Would go as far to say "unspoilt". You must, must visit it in the evening & view the town from the walkway by St Vincents - fairy like! Descriptions I've seen i.e a "seaside town" & all it's connitations, don't do it justice. It's not. It's rather a "lovely place by the sea". Would I go back or recommend it to friends - yes. Already have done.
Final point - dealing with the owner, Mark, was effortless. That in itself is worth a great deal.

Wonderful sunshine in Collioure

Visitors from Yorkshire Leeds, Yorkshire, UK.
Date Submitted: July 14, 2010 Date of Stay: June 2010
We have just returned from a wonderful two weeks in Collioure. The weather was hot and sunny throughout - perfect for a relaxing time - and we spent a fair amount of time reading on the balcony overlooking the Med. The location was good - we enjoyed the walk into town which was very scenic and took about 15 minutes. (The walk back uphill was sometimes a bit harder in the heat of the day!) It's nice that you can also walk to Port Vendres.
Our favourite restaurant by a long way was Cocoliberis, which is on the first stretch of the bay you arrive at when walking in to Collioure - excellent fresh fish for very reasonable prices and run by a very friendly family.
The property was comfortable, and we were glad to be able to keep in touch with Wimbledon through the satellite BBC channels. An overhead shower would be an improvement.
We only hired a car for the first week and then enjoyed travelling around by train or bus - 1 Euro takes you by bus to St Cyprien in one direction or Banyuls in the other. The buses are not very frequent but that doesn't matter too much when you're on holiday!

We found the house comfortable, excellent views and in a quiet location. We found showering in the bathroom a bit awkward as we are used to a shower cubicle or curtain and we don't have baths. Plenty of room for two of us. Pool was not available but wasn't necessary as the weather only started to warm up to 30 degrees at the end of our holiday. We didn't have a car as it was only 15 minutes walk down to the town. We found Collioure to be quiet with friendly people and superb views.

A lovely apartment - very cosy which was welcome as it was fairly cold, wet and windy during our stay. Apartment would benefit from having a torch! We arrived very late at night and couldn't find the switch in the fuse box nor the tap to turn on the water in the dark! Apartment is clean and well equipped with amazing views over the sea. The apartment is a reasonable walk from the centre of Collioure and there were no taxis at the train station when we arrived. Taxis are few and far between, but Laurent in Cafe Sola managed to call one for us. If you choose to stay at this apartment you need to enjoy walking (which we do) although there are regular buses costing only one euro which travel from Perpignon to Cerberre with drop off points at all the little ports and villages along the way.Collioure and Port Vendres are perfect places to wander around and explore, stopping for a coffee or a verre du vin! Port Vendres is just as close to walk to as Collioure. There's a Lidl on the outskirts of Port Vendres which is handy for provisions. A market also takes place in Collioure on Wednesdays and Sundays and it's the perfect place for buying spices, oils, cheeses and saucisson. There are many wonderful restaurants and bars with friendly and helpful staff. Our favourite restaurant was Dali with La Clocher as one of the best tapas bars. There's also a great pizza restaurant just along from cafe sola which serves an amazing curry pizza! The little train is a must. The tourist information office also provides hints and tips on things to do and helps out with bookings for travel - along with the local town hall - all very French - we were sent to the mairie to book a bus for our return trip to the airport. Everyone was really helpful. A perfect place to sit and watch the world go by.
ps Also really easy to contact the owner of this property who e mailed us several times in advance of our trip with advice and information.

We stayed for a week in September, the house was clean, peaceful and had gorgeous views from the lounge and in particular the bedroom. Electronic shutters when opened in the morning brought a smile to your face as you looked over to the sea. Nice walk into Collioure where restaurants and shops are in abundance. Car not really needed as train station in the town but handy for the shopping. Best beach at Argeles, most restaurants good and fairly consistant price wise averaging 15 to 20 euros a head with a caraffe of wine. Cooking in the house adequate for pasta's and salads. There were a couple of beach chairs and ice block in freezer. Would return if back in the area.

Sunshine and warm seas

As this was our first trip to the South of France with two relatively young boys (6 and 4), we were looking for good weather, the seaside and a clean pleasant property. This property, and location, delivered everything we could have wanted.
Blessed with sunshine every day and temperatures of 30deg c, we were able to walk down to the beach in the morning, with the occasional stop to look in the rock pools. After a swim in the sea, it was off to the local shops for a picnic lunch, followed by a walk back to the apartment for a siesta.
The afternoon typically involved a trip to the pool which, although reasonably busy, was never over crowded and always clean and pleasant.
The property itself delivered to our expectations. It was clean, tidy and relatively user friendly. In an ideal world, it would have air conditioning, but ,through use of the fans provided, we managed the nighttime temperature. I would rather have this than the cold and wet of the UK.
The owner's representative in France was on call to provide additional bed linen as required.
Overall, the right property in the right location to allow us to have a relaxing holiday, which is all you can ask with two small children.
Would definetly use again.

Had a great week in a wonderful place. Travelled to Collioure by train and able to walk with luggage to acommodation. the sea views are wonderful and although it was hot there was usually a cooling breeze to make it comfortable. Had a teenage son with us who used the pool three times a day (plus sea swimming) and while occasionally busy was often empty.

House was well fitted out and comfortable had all we needed and a great position. Didn't have to think about car parking but in July Collioure is pretty busy and day trippers were coming out as far as this apprtment to find spaces. Town beautiful and numbers of visitors not a problem as all felt very relaxed and good natured.

Will come again!

Appartment was beautifully decorated and furnished, very confortable but crying out for air conditioning of some kind, even a portable unit would surfice. We were blessed with 35deg.c and fans did not have much effect at night. Views were wonderful. Collioure was wonderful as ever. The swimming pool was very dissappointing, not cleaned, toilets and showers were locked, footbath empty, very neglected for July, should probably be taken up with property management company, it let the appartment down.We would use appartment again, probably out of season. Parking abit tricky at times. A beautiful appartment tastfully furnished let down by swimming pool.

A very pleasant apartment nicely situated so that you have a scenic walk into artistic Collioure or in the other direction to the touristy Port Vendre with its yachts and superb fish market at the end of the quay. Walking this way you pass Lidl supermarket.
On arrival we found the apartment very clean, comfortable and well maintained, with excellent views of the sea from both balconies.
We recommend:-
The Petit Train in Collioure.
A boat trip from Port Vendre
The newly opened old dynamite site at Paulilles on the way
to the Maillol Museum and the Cellier de Templiers at Banyuls.
We found that we were able to park right outside the apartment throughout our week in April, but a car is not essential and it is very pleasant to walk to the restaurants in Collioure or Port Vendre and not have to decide who is
driving after sampling the local wine!
We had a very enjoyable holiday, can recommend it,in fact
we can't wait to return.

We stayed here for 5 days at the end of May. Nice house, good location, with 2 lovely big balconies with great views but a little bit further out of town than we expected.
The pool wasn't open, but when we finnaly found it, it looked OK.
Because there was just myself and my partner, the double bed had been made up with one pillow each and no other lined provided. We borrrowed a pillow each off of the two small twin beds, and had to buy pillows cases for them ourselves.
There is also no proper oven, only a microwave/convection oven which was OK with us, but may have been restrictive for a family.
Overall, a good choice. We would stay there again and we would recommend it.

Recommended for: Tourists without a Car, Adventure Seekers, Families with Young Children, Sightseeing

Owners Response: This is helpful. We routinely only leave a single pillow each but if requested in advance can provide two.
The pool does not open until June, as is clearly stated in our pre booking information. As stated in this review, our kitchen is small and apart from two ring elements has only got a microwave/grill/oven. Those who wish to do most of their own cooking instead of sampling the local restaurants may find this restrictive

We found the house well-equipped and comfortable - we did cook for four people several evenings. The residential area was very quiet the last week of September. The views were as promised and the walk into Collioure was pleasant, day and evening.
Colliioure is a charming town. We especially enjoyed the market, two days per week, Sunday and ?. We got a good tour of the hills around Collioure and Port Vendres on the Petit Train.
A parking space was available just outside the unit but it was a challenge to get into the first time. We left the car parked and walked everywhere for a couple of days.
As Canadians getting ready for winter, we loved the sunshine!

Perfect family holiday villa

BKD Sheffield.
Date Submitted: July 15, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
This villa was a ten minute walk from the centre of Colioure which we found to be a beautiful seaside village on the mediterranean border between France and Spain. We came prepared to travel around and found it unnecessary for a week, although if you were here longer you'd probably want to be able to travel further. We were close enough to the village to walk in once or twice a day, which means that teenage kinds can get some freedom and you can have a glass or two of wine with dinner on an evening without worrying about driving. You will want to do this because the evenings in the port are a lovely experience. The shared pool wasn't too busy the rest of the time, and there are good walks in the local hills, and lots of water-based activities if that's what you need. The villa (which is one of a town-house-like row) has two balconies that are great for sunbathing or relaxing with a glass of wine in the evening. Only cautions are (1) there is a bit of a hill coming out of town, so not ideal if you're not up for that, and (2) the cooking facilities are OK for a quick snack or pasta dish, but you'd need to be patient if you want to cook a three course meal for 4. But why go to France then cook for yourself? Highly recommended.

Having never been to this region I have to admit it was gorgeous. And Collioure was probably our favour coast town in that region after exporing several others.

The house is very close to the town and has a beautiful view of the sea. I'm sure in the height of summer this area is extremely busy and parking would perhaps be an issue in town, but its only a 10 min walk.

As a family we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider booking again. Our daughter is 2.5, and the house is probably OK for most children at that age, but any younger and you might consider taking a stair gate.

All of the restaurants we visited were very nice, and several were exceptionally good for families.

It is a very pleasant 10 minute walk into Collioure where we had several very good meals both at lunchtime and in the evenings. The apartment was very well organised. You have all what you need for a comfortable stay. The place is near to town, just a small walk. That gives the advantage that it is very calm in the evenings. And how nice to wake up in the morning and drink coffee while looking at the sea.
We had a stay of 2 weeks in May. 1st week we had some bad luck with the weather but that did not take off the fun. There is more then enough to enjoy in the neighbourhood : excellent wine cellars, good restaurants, fine art, some interesting buildings, we even enjoyed some Spa. The second week with nice weather we could make a lot of nice walks in the area, beautiful nature and not to crowded and nice little towns with markets.
