Nice studio of character and charm

Francophiles   England.
Date Submitted: October 29, 2009   Date of Stay: October 2009
Thank you Pierre for letting us stay in your charming studio. The location is superb, tucked away in the old town under the Colline du Chateau, in a corner much painted by artists past and present, including Raoul Dufy.
It is spacious for a studio and we loved the big balcony (shame the weather didn't let us have more use of it!). It was a pleasure to be met at the bus station by Pierre's delightful and helpful local manager, Rachel, who took us up to the studio, a mere five minute walk. We hope to return to Nice sometime and would not hesitate to stay at the same studio.

Our holiday in Nice

D'd & M't   Leeds.
Date Submitted: October 08, 2009   Date of Stay: September 2009
On arrival, we were met at the bus station (gare routiere; direct bus from airport) as prearranged and taken to the studio (few minutes walk) which was immaculate and absolutely delightful. We stayed for two weeks and it had everything we needed. We did a fair amount of self-catering and the only thing we needed to get for ourselves was an oyster knife! It's ideally situated for the whole of central Nice, as well as tram (connections to SNCF and chemin de fer de provence trains), and buses to further afield. It's very picturesque - we found two separate postcards of the street - but also very quiet; this is not true of all picturesque parts of Nice.

Pierre and his contact in Nice Rachael were delightful to deal with, absolutely straight and straightforward. We had no problems at all, but we had Rachael's mobile number in case we did.

Nice is fantastic for good food (restaurants and markets), beautiful churches, beautiful buildings of all kinds, museums (Modern Art, Matisse, and Massena are incredible; Arts asiatiques supposed to be but we went on a Tues when shut). Journeys out to St Paul de Vence and the Fondation Maeght, to Vence and the Matisse Chapel (both by bus), and to Annot (by train) were memorable. Villefranche is well worth visiting (local bus). There’s a big folder of information in the flat. It was really hot, so lots of beach and sea too - we didn't cope well with the large pebbles (though most people seem to), but once we'd joined those who use little plastic or rubber shoes to swim in, we didn't look back.

Would recommend it to anyone, and go back like a shot.

Owners Response: An oyster knife is a good idea ! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in Nice, I'll be there soon and can't wait, despite the years and all. The atmosphere is unique. It is true that I never eat any oyster there, so I'll get one. They serve fantastic sea food on Place Garibaldi, at Cafe de Turin. Merci for visiting, et a bientot j'espere, Pierre

Holiday in Old Nice.

Phil & Linda.   Nth. Yorks..
Date Submitted: September 26, 2009   Date of Stay: September 2009
This is the third consecutive year that we have stayed in this apartment. It has always been clean and tidy on arrival. It is very close to all facilities, bus station, supermarket and a large variety of smaller shops, including butchers, bakers, market stalls etc.all within a few minutes walk of the apartment.
Another of the advantages of this apartment is it's large terrace, there are a variety of apartments for rental in Nice, but very few are available with such an excellent terrace. This in effect is like having an extra room, especially useful for alfresco breakfast or evening meals. The location of the flat is in a pedestrianized and picturesque part of Old Nice and we would have no hesitation in recommending it. Phil & Linda.

This was our second visit to Pierre’s apartment and hopefully we will be back next year.
We love the apartment, Nice, surrounding mountains and beautiful coast line.
The apartment is cosy, clean & full of Character. Exactly what you would hope to find in the old town.
Part of the excitement of Nice, is finding the Café, shop or hidden treasure that wasn’t in the guide book which is why we want to return to discover more.

My husband an I rented this appartment for a week. It's charm an location were rare,,, In the heart of the Old town it was very calm as well. We could could walk everywhere.. The apartment was spotless and we found all the conveniences of modern day life. It seems that Pierre , the owner had just bought new appliances such as the coffee maker and Ironing board and T.V. Pierre was very helpful by recommending us some restaurants and places to visit. We took the bus from the bustation located just a minute from his house. We even had lunch on the terrace one day in February ! So we just want to thank Pierre again

Charming studio with loads of character; stylishly
renovated with a decent size sunny terrace.
Situated in the very heart of Le Vieux Nice, ideal
for my city break (no need of a car)! Convenient for exploring the old town, but also for shops, restaurants, the port, the Promenade des Anglais or the ruins of the ancient Chateau.

Had a pleasant stay, and found my winter sun.
Will definitely recommend it to my friends and probably
will go back there myself.

We felt wonderful when we got to the apartment. It was cool and breezy when we opened the doors on to the terrace and we felt immediately at home. Discovering our way around was one of the joys of the trip ! A lot done in a short time, all because of the convenience of your apartment.

The apartment is set in what is called the 'old town' if you truely want to capture Nice and all it's true charm then this apartment is perfect. We wanted to discover the true Nice and be within reach of all the local shops, restaurants, buses, trams & train station and of course the beach!
The apartment is very well equipped, full of charm, clean and tidy and very light & bright. The balcony is stunning, we had many a romantic breakfasts and evening drinks and all in all a perfect break.
We are already looking at booking again for next year!

My husband and I have stayed in many places in Nice over the years and we have finally found the perfect place. Not only is the location ideal, in the heart of the old town, but unlike many other dark places we stayed in, the studio is flooded with sunshine, even the comfortable size bathroom has a window and the balcony is such a rare treat. The other advantage is that the studio is situated in such a way, that we did not have to put up with late night noisy crowds coming out of bars and nightclubs. The place was clean and well kept and the owner was very helpful and charming. We would strongly recommend this place to anyone looking for a picturesque place to stay with a genuine feel of the old Nice coupled with all the advantages of staying in the heart of the old town.

Our stay aug 08

The apartment exceeded expectations. Very romantic. We absolutely loved staying there. The terrace was perfect and used alot. Only issue might be for anyone with walking disabilities were the very narrow steep stairs. But the apartment had an excellent location in the old town, so very close to the beach, little lanes full of restaurants and bus station.
Might have been nice to have something left in the fridge for us for our arrival, even a bottle of water would have been greatly appreciated as we arrived at 2 in the morning. Also was a mix up with arrving at the apartment. But from then onwards we had a fantastic holiday and will definitely return.

Holiday in Old Nice.

Phil,   Skipton, North Yorkshire..
Date Submitted: July 21, 2008   Date of Stay: June 2008
The apartment is in one of the most picturesque parts of old Nice and the approach is absolutely charming. Safely away from all traffic you will not find anywhere in Nice more convenient for all amenities. The nearest large supermarket is less than five minutes walk. Local small retailers, butchers, bread shops, even a daily fish
market can be found about two hundred yards from the apartment. Also of course restaurants, bars, souvenirs etc,in fact all the vibrancy of old Nice is on the doorstep, yet the apartment is quietly tucked away from the main hustle and bustle. The main bus station in Nice is a few minutes walk
away, very handy when you first arrive in Nice from the airport
on the number 98 bus. From here you can take a bus to anywhere along the coast, from Cannes to Menton. The price is
the same wherever you decide to go, for 2008 it was just one
euro. The rental on this property is very reasonable, well equipped, with a lovely large terrace with lots of plants, even a
small lemon tree. Within five minutes you can be walking along the Promenade Des Anglais or on the beach. The recently opened Nice tramway is a two minute walk from the apartment
this is very useful if you want to visit the large department stores
around Ave. Jean Medecin or else if you are reasonably fit and
intend visiting the Matisse museum in Cimiez you can travel
the full journey in the opposite direction to Pont Michel, cross
the bridge and walk to the museum. I have stayed twice in this
apartment and will have no hesitation booking again for our next
holiday in Nice.

Everything at your fingertips

Date Submitted: June 18, 2008   Date of Stay: May 2008
This studio is perfect for two people. It is cozy, and the terrace is beautiful. The "click-clack" bed was very comfortable, and we slept wonderfully there. The studio looks exactly like the pictures and description depict, we were met with no surprises, except that it was more beautiful than the pictures showed. The moment we arrived it felt like home!

We loved strolling through the market streets and spending our evenings on the terrace. The beach is a short, pleasant walk through the amazing winding streets of Old Nice. The people of Nice are very kind, we chatted with many in the cafes, and on the beach. We always took restaurant recommendations and were never disappointed.

For traveling, this studio is perfect! The bus station and the tram are right around the corner, so getting to other parts of Nice and the Riviera is a snap! The tram is perfect for getting to the train station in a mere 10 minutes. We used Nice as a home base for traveling to the Cannes Film Festival, and the best part of our day was to come home to our lovely space.

I highly recommend this studio. Pierre is very sweet, and incredibly helpful. He speaks very good English, which is great for those, like us, who know little French. He gave us lots of helpful information on the region, traveling to Cannes and even helped us meet up with a friend of his at the festival. He really went above and beyond for us, and it made all the difference in the world! The only downside of the studio is that it is on the third floor, so those who can't navigate steps might have a problem.

I have spent lots of time in Europe and have rented apartments frequently. This was by far the best experience I have had! We cannot wait to return to Cannes and when we do, we will rent this studio again without hesitation! Thank you Pierre, for this unforgettable introduction to the Nice culture and lifestyle!

Relaxing in Nice Old Town

Peter and Stella   St Helier, Jersey.
Date Submitted: May 18, 2008   Date of Stay: April 2008
A wonderful peaceful terrace to return to after a day's sightseeing in the late afternoon sun. Relax with a glass of chilled wine - no cars, just the chattering of people passing below. The flat itself has great character.
The food shops close by make shopping a pleasure.A short walk and we could be in the old harbour area as well as the Old town. The Tram & Bus network are marvellous and very cheap so we had no need of a car.
Pierre as always made sure we had clear directions to reach the flat and ideas of places to visit.Hopefully we will return again nect year.

Comments from Owner Guestbook

' Just a quick note to let you know how much we loved the apartment and le Vieux Nice. The apartment was wonderfully sunny, bright and airy, with sounds of seagulls and church bells, and views of soft coloured buildings and rooftops and beautiful skies. It had everything we needed. It was all quite fantastic really -- everyday we bought fresh fish and mussels from the wonderful fish market -- just one minute from our door and five minutes away on Cours Saleya, we bought huge bunches of sunflowers. We feasted like royalty! ' Beryl and Anthony
'I am just back at my office desk after what has been a lovely break in Nice. Your apartment is charming and everything we hoped it would be. I can't believe I wasted several years going to over-priced and characterless hotels. ' Andy
'Many thanks for letting us stay in your apartment. It really did prove to be a little gem, full of character and very strategically placed for all amenities. The terrace of course is the 'piece de resistance',Phi

Minimum Standards Not Met

J+A   Hamburg.
Date Submitted: January 23, 2009   Date of Stay: January 2009
The good thing: the studio is centrally located in a lively section of Nice, with the city center in easy walking distance.
Other than that, we were underwhelmed. The studio did not meet the minimum standards of cleanliness. Everything was coated with a thick layer of dust as if it had not even been casually wiped down in several months. The first thing we did upon arrival was wipe down and vacuum those items of furniture that we needed to use. The furniture was, while not old, extremely worn out and uncomfortable. For example, there were tears in the seat of one chair. The folding bed/couch was dirty and stained. Upon washing the gray towels and washcloth provided by the owner, we discovered that they were actually white and light blue. The staircase was very narrow and difficult to manage with a heavy large suitcase. We had not been told it was under reconstruction (which would have been a deal breaker), rendering it borderline life threatening; this was made more difficult because the lights did not stay on long enough to reach all the way up- or downstairs.
Upon our arrival, the washing machine mentioned in the description did not work. We were told a friend of the owner, who fixes things for him, would fix it. Upon departure(!), we were told that said friend hadn't been there to fix anything because he was on vacation. (We didn't notice only because we had managed to fix the machine ourselves.) The kitchen appliances were dirty, some of them (salad tosser, thermos) even slightly moldy. The bathroom was a mess. Everything worked, but it was dirty and stuffed full of strange and unnecessary things that only gathered dust.
If we had booked this location through a travel agency, we would have immediately taken pictures as evidence and demanded a full refund. (The only thing keeping me from linking to the pictures we did take are the rules for posting here.) We plan to return to Nice someday. But definitely not to this particular dump.
Owners Response: Even before the tenant wrote the review above, I wrote an email to him, to which unfortunately he didn't respond. A few days before he arrived, the maid, Isabelle, who was pregnant (without my knowing of it), had a miscarriage. She did not say a word to me about it, and there was no way I could do something about the apartment. So, yes, obviously, as written above with grace, the apartment had dust, since it hadn't been occupied for a few months. As for the machine, if it was so easy to repair it, then it's fine, I'm glad to hear that. The machine is only one year old... I'm absolutely conscious that finding dust in an apartment isn't pleasant at all. And more, Isabelle, still under the shock of her miscarriage, forgot the time of the appointment for the check-out, another mistake of hers of which I also told him how sorry I was. She arrived, one hour late. It was the evening before the actual departure, so there was no big crime. She was accused of not being serious, etc., except that she had had a real problem to deal with. Hundreds of people have already come to my apartment, I can't say how happy I am about that. Some have become friends. And come back again and again. Last year, a lady from the UK came 3 times within a few months. Here and on my website the reviews show that this question of cleaniness is simply not an issue. Isabelle made a few mistakes this time, first of which she should have told me. I have apologized. Her personal situation, of which I informed the tenant as soon as I heard of it, just after they left, hardly didn't make things any better. Fine. That's how it is. There are other places to stay in Nice, this is a wise decision of them to take.
