The centre of Porto Maurizio is a mass of winding, narrow lanes, known as ‘carrugi’, which make for some great exploring. Sights of interest are dotted around the town, including the Cathedral of San Maurizio – the largest church in Liguria. Also consider paying a visit to the small but interesting Naval Museum and the 18th century Covent of Santa Chiara.
The port area offers a long, relaxing walk, and will bring you to the ancient roman bridge which takes you over the river and into Oneglia. This is the business and industrial centre of the city, and offers more modern facilities and attractions. Several companies provide pleasure boat rides along the River Impero, allowing you to take in the contrasting environment as you go.
Porto Maurizo becomes a popular tourist destination during summer months, and the restaurants are a big draw. Fish is the local speciality, and you can also enjoy homemade pasta and locally produced wines. The surrounding area is a diverse mixture of beaches, mountains and countryside, with hiking, climbing, fishing, sailing and water sports just some of the activities that can be enjoyed.

Imperia is a city of two halves, and a visit to Oneglia is a necessity. Once you have done that you may wish to venture further out into the Imperia province, and enjoy the architecture and rural splendour of Dolcedo (9km inland), the nightlife and entertainment of San Remo (24km along the coast) or the surfing and beaches of Diano San Pietro (12km north-east), amongst others.
