Our converted stone farmhouse offers commodious accommodation in an environment of unusual tranquility. The 'Cottage Flat for Two' sleeps 1 couple with room for a baby. The 'Cottage Flat for Four/Five' sleeps two couples or a family of up to 5, or a couple and up to 3 singles. With this option several more living spaces are available: a second kitchen, second bedroom, bathroom with shower and mezzanine library. We lie 2 km off road with paved parking/turning space. Guests enjoy unlimited use, with us, of our family pool, a short stroll from the house, around which our tiered meadows are yours to walk or sit with a book on benches at strategic viewing points. Comprising the main floor of our converted stone farmhouse, this unit has charming, spacious accommodation for a couple. Inside the character beamed ceilings, exposed stone and wood enhance the generous living spaces where a newly fitted kitchen, comfortable 3 piece suite, pine dining table and bookshelves increase guests' comfort, along with a UK video (no live tele), multi format DVD with screen and CD/MP3 player. The unit has a designer woodstove, 2 well equipped patios & a small brick barbecue. Our meadows are at your disposal with benches for your comfort as you admire the view. A stroll away our secluded family 'infinity' pool with its saline water is equipped with further loungers and shades and a pine-clad changing cabin. To maximise the privacy of your stay, apart from our family, you will be the only guests.

In a secluded and unspoilt location, 20 minutes' drive above and beyond the medieval hill town of Cortona in South East Tuscany, our tiny mountain hamlet perches on the side of a wooded Tiber tributary valley, with views across Umbria to the Apennines. Apart from historic Cortona, with its Renaissance treasures and imaginative Etruscan museum, tempting day trips by car include Assisi, Perugia, Siena, Gubbio and Arezzo ,while Rome and Florence lie under 2 hours away by fast train. Local wine, olive oil, pecorino cheese and wild boar sausage can be sampled in the trattorias or tasted at the cantinas of Montepulciano/Montalcino and in the many specialist outlets. Art afficionados will appreciate the proximity to works not found in the Uffizi, viewable in their original context, frescoes for example by Piero della Francesca. This area, crisscrossed by St Francis, boasts many sites dedicated to him and to Cortona's own saint, Margarita. Music, art and gastronomic festivals abound.

| Notes: | Our family pool may be used freely. We cover it each night, and uncover it in the morning, to maintain an even temperature, and we keep the water scrupulously clean. A washing machine dedicated to guests is housed outside, available for use at a small charge of €5 per wash, with drying on our covered lines outside. White porcelain tableware, high quality non-stick Circulon cookware and an exceptional range of dining and kitchen equipment have been supplied to further enhance your stay. We request that guests treat with respect the wide selection of holiday reading provided, along with some videos and family games, and that they leave them behind! Those wishing to bring children are invited to consider renting 'The Cottage Flat for Four' - at which point the accommodation becomes extremely child friendly, and your children would be welcome! |
Information provided
On booking, travel directions and a guide to the local area are sent, along with an equipment inventory and suggestions for things to bring. On arrival a file of introductory notes is designed to guide your stay. Also provided, a compendium of local tourist authority leaflets, maps etc. On completion of their stay, guests are invited to make entries in our guest book. See box below for latest comments.
Walking/Trekking
The Montagna Cortonese are an ideal area for walking and trekking. Criss-crossed by roman roads, old mule tracks and modern long distance paths, a wide range of options are available to walkers of all levels. Around Lake Trasimene the walks are relatively level, while the nearby foothills offer many circular walks. Above Lake Trasimene walkers may trace the footsteps of Hannibal's soldiers as they ambushed the Roman legions. Longer distance walks - one from our front door to Cortona - take you over well marked paths. These climb to local summits and ascents/descents can be stiff; however the views are worth it! The more adventurous may wish to explore the many logging tracks and ruins that abound in the Tuscan hills. We have maps and books available for consultation, including a recent publication offering 18 circular walks on the Tuscan/Umbrian borders.

The house itself is warm and cosy – the pool is heaven. Tempting though it has been to stay there all day, we “forced” ourselves away to visit some lovely towns and villages.
