Lisbon and Costa de Lisbon, Portugal

The Costa de Lisbon stretches along Portugal's southwest coast, and is made up of dramatic cliffs, varied coastal features and idyllic beaches. Lisbon, Portugal's capital has 20 centuries of history, and Alfama, the oldest quarter of the city retains its original cobbled layout. This area in Portugal offers so much, and yet is less crowded during the summer from the destinations in the Algarve region of Portugal.

City breaks to Lisbon are increasingly popular. This is due to easy access to self catering Lisbon holidays and an abundance of cheap flights to Lisbon, and the exquisite shopping in fashionable bistros, vibrant nightlife and detailed museums. The city is spread along the banks of the river Tagus, and is built on seven hills, so vantage points are not rare. The cities charm lies in its history, and there is plenty of it. Museums celebrating Ancient Art, Military history and theatre are all to be found on a city break to Lisbon, and much of the city itself is remarkable to look at. Downtown, or Baixa, centers on the 18th century district of Rossio, and boast magnificent churches and an impressive castle.

The Costa de Prata also has a historic and artistic heritage, especially in ceramics and crystal. This heritage is best encapsulated in the churches, castles, monasteries and museums of the area, and cycling or walking from your Lisbon holiday villa will reveal gems along the Costa de Prata. The stunning ancient towns of Almeida, Alcobaca and the white castle at Castelo Blanco are also worth seeing. The best beach in this area is arguably Nazare, but there is hot competition!

The Costa do Estoril to the west of Lisbon is slightly more developed for beach tourism. This is where the hills meet the sea, with dramatic effects. The beaches are spectacular, and the resort of Cascais has every facility needed for a complete holiday in Lisbon. Along the Costa do Estoril there are also the hill retreats of Sintra and Estoril town, where you can relax and recuperate miles from all your worries!

Lisbon benefits from a mild temperate climate. It has short winters, long hot summers from May until September, with average temperatures around 28˚C.
