This article is barely a rough guide, scraping the surface of the sights, sounds and things to do in Germany. As a cosmopolitan yet traditional county, Germany has a huge wealth of unique entertainment, festivals, shopping, sporting attractions, world class restaurants and one of the warmest welcomes in Europe. Which ever corner of Germany you choose for your holiday, there is self catering accommodation in Germany to suit.

Things to do on holiday in Germany

You could take many years travelling through the country and not see and do all the things on offer to do in Germany. Culturally speaking, taking accommodation in Germany could not place you in a better location to see several hundred defiant castles and luxurious palaces from all eras, beautifully presented museums, musical and theatrical performances and 32 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Germany also has some stunning natural resources, from the magical Black Forest to the long sandy beaches of the north. There are 16 biosphere reserves of precious landscapes of international importance, where canoeing, walking sailing are encouraged.

As for sporting heritage, there are very few sports unavailable in Germany. Ski resorts like Oberstdorf, Lenggries and Berchtesgaden are friendly, accessible and have retained their national culture, unlike many of Europe’s busiest ski resorts. Water sports are becoming hugely popular in Germany, from wakeboarding to rafting, sailing to surfing. Walking, hiking, cycling and riding are massively popular activities across Germany, as there are huge tracts of unspoilt countryside and unsurpassed scenery. Taking rural accommodation in Germany is a huge treat, especially if you walk down the waterways with a fishing rod.

The towns and cities of Germany, especially the capital of Germany, have a huge number of interesting historical sites and international events. The cities of Berlin, Dresden, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Hamberg, Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich and Nuremburg are all internationally recognised centres of travel and tourism, each with a vast array of things to do and places to see.

Places to holiday in Germany

Mecklenburg, known as the ‘land of a thousand lakes’, is Germany’s least populated region, home to the most beautiful natural landscapes, a perfect place to take accommodation in Germany for a peaceful yet active self catering holiday.

Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) is in the north-west of the country, a mixture of mountains, lakes, waterfalls and flats. Home to the city of Hamburg, with all of its heritage, and surrounded by lakes for water sports, numerous golf courses and some of the best walking and cycling country around, German property in Lower Saxony has become much sought after.

When you think of stereotypical Germany, it is most likely Bavaria you are thinking of; Lederhosen, exquisite beers, (I am yet to find better anywhere in the world), and colourful houses. This is personally my favourite destination in Germany, as the culture is so rich, and so proudly maintained. In this respect, the Black Forest is similar, and also has incredible walking, spas and some modest skiing in winter.

The Baltic Islands offer a unique place to take a holiday rental property in Germany. Still very much undiscovered by the British tourist market, the Baltic Islands consist of picturesque sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages, humbling historic ruins and virgin forests.
