Les Portes du Soleil is a large region of the Alps made up of thirteen resorts between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Les Portes du Soleil accommodation and chalets are popular for skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports. Les Portes du Soleil, meaning ‘the gates of the sun’, is a large region of 14 interconnected ski resorts covering over 650kms of pistes.

Places to holiday in Portes du Soleil

Accommodation in Portes du Soleil is abundant – there is an endless variety of Porte du Soleil villas and apartments to give the Portes du Soleil chalets and Portes du Soleil hotels a run for their money and quality. Skiing holidays in the Portes du Soleil resorts are only complete with Portes du Soleil accommodation.

Morzine-Avoriaz – Situated deep in a little valley, Morzine is a village which is keen to preserve its gentle pace of life and authentic Savoyard charm. This previous farming and slate-mining village is right in the heart of the Portes du Soleil area, an ideal point from which to set out and discover a wealth of possibilities from a Portes du Soleil villa. This resort is particularly popular with snowboarders.

Les Gets - Les Gets is founded on the outer boundary of Portes du Soleil. Although situated at a fairly low altitude the snow record is excellent and the skiing offered is particularly good for beginners and intermediates. Families would find Les Gets an attractive venue with great ski school provision for the little ones. One is also able to ski-to-your-door here.

Chatel – The Châtel ski resort is a lovely Savoyard mountain village situated on a higher altitude than Morzine-Avoriaz. It is a traditional ski resort, seemingly more peaceful than the other Portes du Soleil villages. Châtel offers skiing suitable for all levels, and the resort is especially known for its excellent intermediate runs and superb ski tuition. The ski season at Châtel runs from December to April.

Other popular ski resorts include St Jean d’Aulps and the La Chapelle d’Abondance.

Things to do in Portes du Soleil

Apart from skiing in Portes du Soleil, there are endless eateries in the area, serving a variety of cuisines including the traditional Savoyard food and wine made up of local products. At night, you can put away the Portes du Soleil lift pass and experience the good nightlife at the many resorts.

Travel to Portes du Soleil

Portes du Soleil can easily be reached by means of car, plane or train. The fastest way is to fly to Geneva and take alternative transport from there. The UK holidaymaker can reach Les Portes du Soleil by train. Eurostar trains leave from Waterloo Station in the UK, arriving in Paris about four hours later. From the capital, you can connect with a high-speed TGV train headed for Thonon-les-Bains or for Cluses.
