'Le Bourmier' - Poetry and peace on edge of beautiful village

This is the place to renew yourself! For singles, couples and small families, this secluded, wonderfully peaceful place will re-charge your batteries. Its atmosphere enchants young and old alike. Spacious and well furnished, the barn is situated on the edge of the village with open views over the Auvezere valley. The door to the back of the barn opens out onto a private terrace overlooking the garden and valley, ideal for al fresco dining. We invite our guests to share a pool with the local hotel in Cherveix Cubas, minutes' drive away. There is an excellent restaurant/cafe in the village, and another next door to the hotel/swimming pool. Ideally located to explore the region's rich cultural history i.e. prehistoric cave paintings. The varied countryside offers something to do in every season - including harvesting our walnuts, (and eating them green), and making oil at the local press with Gaston. Marked walks start from the barn. Member of 'Slow Food' org. Meals on request.

It is well placed to visit the prehistoric caves (an hour's drive), and also Perigueux, Sarlat, and Brive. Hautefort and Excideuil with their famous chateaux are ten minutes' drive from the house. Cherveix Cubas with a range of shops, post office, hotel, cafe and excellent restaurant is 3 minutes' drive. We have an arrangement with the hotel to use their excellent pool. Access by a side gate. The restaurant next door is excellent and you may order a meal to take away. Walkers' paradise as the barn is right on a trail which intersects with the GR trails. Notes:

When restoring the barn I invited the best local artisans to work with me. I wanted to keep its unique character, but also to create a space with an atmosphere all of its own, and which reflects contemporary needs. I think we succeeded in creating a special ‘environment’ which is totally in harmony with the surroundings, and which invites relaxation and peace. The libraries provide food for thought and inspiration. The meadow and gardens invite gentle exercise and contemplation. A bird watchers' paradise! The pool we share with the local hotel in Cherveix Cubas (few minutes’ drive) is available to guests, and there are also two swimming lakes very nearby. One is particularly suitable for young children and has a beach and water slide. The other at Hautefort has amazing views of the chateau. You can picnic, or eat at one of the cafes on site. I offer babysitting if required.

Why choose to come and stay in Le Bourmier?

Le Bourmier was built in 1792, undoubtedly by an artisan who understood his land and his raw materials. Everything fits together creating harmony between man and nature. I first went there in the Easter of 1991, quite by chance, at the invitation of the previous owner. I walked through the simple front door into the kitchen, and felt that it was a special place. Peacefulness, and a special something about the way this building nestles in the valley and catches the light, drew me to it. A year later I bought the property! Anlhiac is an exceptionally beautiful village, with two chateaux, an unusual church open to the public and a very welcoming community. The restaurant and cafe, (also shop for bread and basic groceries), are a few minutes' walk from the barn in the village square.

Cultural history

This part of the world is one of the centres of prehistory, and where we can learn how we lived tens of thousands of years ago. The world museum of prehistory at Les Eyzies is superb, as are the facsimiles of the cave paintings at Lascaux, and the real thing (still open to the public) at Font de Gaume, Les Combarelles, and Teyjat. In medieval times the troubadours created a new poetry which was the foundation of the western poetic tradition. Two of the most famous, Giraut de Bornelh and Bertran de Born, lived nearby in the marvellous castles of Hautefort and Excideuil. Visits led by a local specialist to Excideuil (in French or English) can be arranged. Limoges (1 hour's drive) is another great cultural centre for glass, porcelain and enamel. The famous forge at Savignac is only 15 minutes' drive, or can be reached by the walking trail (of which there are many) along the river Auvezere. There is also a museum of a unique paper mill, Papeterie de Vaux, which used rye straw.

'Le Bourmier' - Ideal for writers, or as a retreat

This part of the Perigord is unspoilt, and with little traffic. The barn is situated in the 'lieu dit' (hamlet) of Le Bourmier, part of the village of Anlhiac and is ideal for those wishing to go on retreat, for a few days or weeks. It is also very suitable for writers and artists, offering a supportive environment and yet solitude. Special rates on request for guests wishing to stay for a month or more. For recreation it abounds in natural lakes where you can swim, beautiful rivers for canoeing, or discovering on foot. I found a huge drift of wild aspholdels on the bank of the river Auvezere one Easter. From the house ornithologists can hear the hoopoe, and many other birds. One of my guests saw a hobby catch a swift on the wing.

Other Activities caving, canoeing.
