1 in 4 holidaymakers in Spain 'are British'

A quarter of all the holidaymakers in Spain last year came from the UK, new figures have revealed.

According to data from the Spanish government, the number of holidaymakers in Spain went up by 1.7 per cent to 59.2 million during 2007.

More than 16 million of these were British holidaymakers, although the country was found to be popular with other nationalities as well.

For example, the number of people from the US who chose to visit Spain went up by more than a fifth to 1.1 million.

In addition, the country was found to be a popular destination for German and French leisure travellers, who numbered ten million and 9.3 million respectively.

Figures also revealed that revenue generated by the holiday sector rose by more than four per cent during this period to £35 billion.

Earlier this week, Claire Lilley of Holiday Which? magazine said Spain was a popular choice for Britons because it was a "hassle-free" country.
