The ancient Greek Orthodox religion remembers Christ's baptism in the River Jordan with the festival of Epiphany, taking place on the 5th and 6th January. If you stay in a rented holiday home in Cyprus you can observe and partake in the fascinating and often stunning rituals and local exhibitions of faith, as wives throw pancakes and sausages on their roofs to appease evil spirits and the waters are blessed in church.

The highlight of proceedings occurs on Epiphany day where doves are released into the air to the sound of horns as a priest casts a cross into the waters and young men attempt to reclaim the holy object.
