Alentejo 'is unspoiled Portugal'

Holidaymakers are being urged to sample the unspoiled delights of Alentejo in Portugal, which could soon be targeted by construction firms if a regional airport is given the go-ahead.

Destined to be the new Algarve, Alentejo is as yet untouched by developers and tourists and offers many attractions for families looking for a quiet holiday, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Untouched countryside, wildlife, market towns, castles, churches, a massive artificial freshwater lake, the local sheep's cheese industry and short winters are some of the reasons why Britons may want to travel to Alenjento.

"If you like wild, empty beaches with miles of sand and rolling waves, you'll love the region's long Atlantic coast stretching all the way south to Sagres in the Algarve," wrote travel expert Robin Gauldie in the newspaper.

In fact, the area is so untouched that there are very few facilities for tourists, which means holidaymakers need to a hire car, as well as parasols, beach mats and other paraphernalia.

According to low-fares airline Monarch, Portugal is the 12th most popular destination among its customers.
