Border-free zone expanded across Europe

People travelling to eastern Europe will find it much easier as several countries have now joined the border-free zone.

This means that people from EU countries will be able to enter countries such as the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia and Poland without displaying their passport.

Hungary, Lithuania, Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia have also joined the zone.

As well as being potentially good news for the tourist markets in these countries, people from the new entrants may also be more inclined to visit longer-standing members of the zone.

The area already includes established holiday destinations such as Austria, France, Germany and Spain in its ranks.

Commenting on the expansion of the zone last night, Slovakian prime minister Robert Fico said: "From midnight tonight you can travel 4,000 km from Tallinn in Estonia to Lisbon in Portugal without any border controls."

Other members of the border-free zone include Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
