Britons 'heading to the sun this Christmas'Destination trends: 28 December 2007A travel agent in Greater Manchester has reported a surge in the number of people travelling abroad for the festive season. Co-operative Travel's Sale and Altrincham branch stated that hot and sunny destinations such as Cyprus were attracting more visitors this Christmas than they did last year. The number of tourist heading for the Mediterranean island was said to have increased by 40 per cent, while Egypt saw growth of 31 per cent. Joanne Evison, regional manager of the travel agent, said these destinations were popular because they offered good weather during the British winter. Speaking to the Northwich Guardian, she commented: "The feedback from our customers is that, having missed out on a hot summer, they are desperate to get some sun over the winter." Portugal and Spain were also highlighted as popular holiday destinations this Christmas, along with India, Tunisia and the US. Co-operative Travel recently estimated that about 3.3 million people from the UK would be spending the festive season abroad. See our featured properties in the USA
