Britons 'unwilling to sacrifice holidays'Destination trends: 19 May 2008New research conducted by American Express Travellers Cheques has revealed that well over a third of Britons will sacrifice daily spending to fund their summer holidays. Holidaymakers are expected to pay an average of £773 on top of their flights and accommodation, with those in the north of Scotland likely to pay the most at £1054 and those in the south-west the least at £520. Penny-pinching Brits are forgoing luxuries and creature comforts in the run up to the summer, spending less on new outfits (22 per cent), meals out (21 per cent), and in the pub (15 per cent) in order to ensure their breaks in the sun. A number of Britons are also cutting corners on more major expenses with seven per cent delaying home improvement and 13 per cent putting off large purchases such as televisions and sofas. With the euro strong against the pound, a moneysupermarket.com survey has found that 29 per cent of British holidaymakers are looking beyond Europe for their breaks in order to make the most of their carefully saved money.
