Cyprus attracts more Britons

More holidaymakers from the UK are choosing to spend their leisure time in Cyprus, new figures have revealed.

Official statistics showed that almost 33,000 British citizens visited the Mediterranean island last month, reports the Financial Mirror.

This is up from 31,481 a year earlier - an increase of 4.4 per cent.

Figures also showed that the number of holidaymakers from Germany also went up by a significant proportion over the same period.

In February 2007, 5,535 German tourists visited Cyprus - this figure has now risen by almost a quarter to 6,910.

The overall number of holidaymakers went up by 11.2 per cent throughout the 12-month period to just over 70,000.

This is the largest year-on-year increase since May 2004.

Cyprus was recently highlighted as a popular destination for British holidaymakers by travel firm Thomas Cook.

According to the company, the island is currently as popular as ever, as it offers an affordable holiday and good weather prospects.
