Cyprus becomes a member of the euroCyprus: 02 January 2008People travelling to Cyprus will now be required to take euro notes and coins with them on holiday. The island became a member of the single currency on New Year's Day, four years after its entry into the European Union. Although it is much smaller than other members of the eurozone such as Spain and France, the country will still have equal status in Europe's central bank. This means that Cyprus could have a potentially decisive role in deciding fiscal policy across the continent. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the changeover, president Tassos Papadopoulos said euro membership would improve people's lives for the better. He added: "'If our accession to the European Union is rightly considered as a great achievement, our adoption of the euro can be justifiably described as an even greater deed." According to official figures cited by the Financial Mirror, many of those taking holidays in Cyprus come from other European countries, such as Greece, Germany and the UK.
