Cyprus tourism officials aim to attract Britons

More British holidaymakers could be set to head for Cyprus as a result of a new marketing drive.

A promotional campaign featuring Cypriot tennis star Marcos Baghdatis has been designed by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation.

The body hopes that the homegrown international celebrity will appeal to foreign consumers who see the new advertisements.

More than one million people from the UK visited the Mediterranean island last year, making it a key target market for Cypriot tourism authorities.

The campaign will focus on promoting the country's core attractions, including its scenery, beaches and year-round sunshine.

Advertisements will be broadcast on national television channels and printed in leading newspapers and magazines.

In addition, they will be prominently displayed in the form of posters and billboards across the UK.

Last week, the Financial Mirror reported that almost 33,000 British citizens visited Cyprus last month.

This is up from 31,481 a year earlier - an increase of 4.4 per cent.
