Economic pressure 'not affecting global tourism'Destination trends: 23 January 2008International tourism has not been negatively affected by worldwide economic problems, according to an industry group. The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) said the overall number of holidaymakers went up last year, despite recent issues such as the credit crunch. Concerns over the global economy have raised fears of a worldwide recession, which were recently compounded by volatile stock markets and the biggest interest rate cut in the US for 25 years. Figures from WTTC revealed that during 2007, international tourism arrivals increased by almost six per cent to 900 million people. The organisation also stated that a similar increase in the amount of tourist spending was also recorded last year. Commenting on the figures, WTTC president Jean-Claude Baumgarten said this was particularly good news for emerging markets. He commented: "These countries are not only recognising the development potential of travel and tourism and therefore investing heavily in new infrastructure and facilities."
