Holidaymakers to travel beyond eurozone

Destination trends: 2 June 2008

British tourists could be set to shun traditional European destinations this year, according to industry experts.

The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) believes the weakness of the pound against the euro could impact on people's destination choices.

Specifically, it believes that people will head for destinations which do not use the single European currency, as they could potentially offer better value for money.

Derek Moore, chairman of AITO, said people do not need to travel much further to take advantage of more favourable exchange rates.

He commented: "There will be an increasing number opting for countries on the edge of the euro zone - like Morocco and Turkey."

Mr Moore added that if the price of going on holiday increases this winter, holidaymakers will be more cautious when booking next year's trip abroad.

According to a poll by Moneysupermarket.com, nearly one in three Britons are thinking of travelling outside Europe this year because of the poor exchange rate.
